Is it wrong to take home good balls from your range bucket?

As for found balls on the course. If it's in heavy rough, and it's reasonable to think it's a lost ball, pick it up. I put my shots in that kind of stuff all the time (sadly) and would never be offended if someone pocketed one I lost a few days earlier.
He he he - for me I DEFINITELY don't want those balls back. It wasn't my bad swing, it was bad ball karma :-) SO I am glad for another sucker, er golfer, to find that ball and either 1) also lose it or 2) find that it is magic for them and the balance has all been restored.

And just in case, this is not a serious response to this topic - just some fun
If you think to yourself that it would be inappropriate to ask - then you probably should be able to figure out that it's stealing. Otherwise, why would your conscience tell you to avoid the situation?

If you think, "It's not worth the trouble to walk it over" well, then the ball's probably not worth the crisis of conscience required to pocket it.
Right on - if it isn't worthwhile to be up front about it then it is not worth it.

Simple topics like these with unerlying moral content are always an issue. Like the recent threads I saw about cheating. Within the context of the rules, you either do or you don't - sometimes it is by accident or ignorance, but it still is .....

So what is the difference between taking a ball and taking one of the demo clubs? Either way, you are taking something that was meant to be used at the range only for your own personal gain.

It shocks me how many people apparently DON'T get it.

Its called Stealing. Bet you cheat on your scorecard too, if you think its ok.

Wrong. There is no transitive property in this case. That's like saying if I were the type to step on a spider, I would go out and poach an endangered tiger as well. Ridiculous.

You know there are a lot of people out there who grandstand over trivial stuff but in private are guilty of all kinds of despicable things.

I don't know what it is but I find that the ultra uptight sticklers are the least trustworthy of them all.

I think it also may be a little different considering the range type.

If it's a privately owned range with non-uniform ball types, then I will leave the balls there.

If it's my home course where I have shanked many tee shots from adjacent holes, I am more inclined to pick up a premium ball out of the basket. Typically, I will only pull out a ball though if it is the same kind of ball that I play.

It was a muni course with uniformly crappy range balls.

I was trying to think of a way to say this without directly insulting somebody here. Well put.

To clear up my OP, I did not post this thread because I had a guilty conscience. It actually felt like I was kind of lucky to find such a clean, premium ball in the bucket. To be honest, ive never heard of a "all lost balls become property of the course" rule. Ive lost my fair share of balls on the course, and im pretty sure the manager would look at me crazy if I asked him for a free box of replacements because his course stole my balls.

I can certainly see the viewpoint of those that say to leave the balls there, but to call somebody a thief, or immoral, just reeks of a "holier than thou" attitude and doesnt seem to reinforce the supposedly ethical behavior that they seem to live and die by.

BTW, to clear up any confusion, it definitely didnt originally belong to the course. How do I know this? It was a logo ball and it had the name of a different course about 30 miles away lol.

The bottom line is you are those things, you stole a golf ball. I'm not the "holier than thou" type at all and do all kinds of things that are wrong on a day to day basis. But to say picking out a brand new or premium ball out of a range bucket is OK makes no sense to me. If you want to justify your actions then whatever helps you sleep at night but its still stealing. And again I ran 2 red lights on the way to work and sped the entire way there, did I know it was wrong? Yes. I've done far worse things than stealing balls too but its still stealing.

When an honest person walks the walk knowing right from wrong, good from bad calls into question the actions of someone that makes it appear as though he doesn't know right from wrong, we can bet dollars to donuts the next thing we'll hear is extreme labels like "holier than thou", or the big "winning" character comparison to a priests with serious emotional problems. I find it interesting that people that don't know the difference between right and wrong, also prefer being lied to or agreed with when they ask others if their action or behavior is wrong.

Im pretty sure that there is a law regarding your speeding concerns. Im not aware of any laws or rules regarding taking lost balls out of the range bucket, but if you know of any, id be more than happy to read up.

I didnt post this looking for guidance or justification of my actions. I thought it would make for an interesting discussion, which I believe it has. Im actually going to the course today after work, and im secretly hoping to find a TM Penta in my bucket. The one I found while searching for my ball out of bounds a few weeks ago ended up in the water and id like another chance to try one out. BTW, the course owes me one since their groundskeeper stole my ball when he cleaned out the water.
