GHIN Reporting: Outlier Golf Round?

Recommended Posts

I have been averaging in the low to mid-90s for 18 holes (17.3 HI). I have been practicing very hard and am seeing some positive results on the range, but the swing changes have been difficult to implement on the course.

However, today I shot a 75 on a par 70. Am I required to report this score, which is so outside the norm for me? Will that just skew my HI?

Thank you for your responses.

My biggest gripe with the USGA handicapping system is that only low outliers effect your score, whereas high outlier's are completely ignored.

I play with two guys pretty regularly and the three of us have a scoring average with +/- .3 of each other at any given point (78.2 currently), but I am a 4, one guy is a 7, and the other is a 5. Obviously the difference is that my good stuff is better than theirs and my bad stuff is much worse. But why on earth am I giving 3 strokes to a guy with the same scoring average established on the same home course? Screw you handicapping system!

Yes you must report it btw. Remember a handicap is only a tool used to make money by the weak minded and shameless. A true golfer realizes that the handicap is simply a mirror of what has happened, not a tool to be used/manipulated.

Your handicap is supposed to reflect your potential. Your 75 is a clear reflection of that potential. I wouldn't look at a reduced handicap as having been "skewed", I'd look at it as having been appropriately adjusted. Twenty rounds from now it will drop out of your calculation, and if you haven't backed it up with other low rounds you'll go back to where you are anyway.

If I were you I'd take pride in the reduction. Congratulations on that 75.

Thanks Sawgrass. Your explanation makes a lot of sense. My 16 year old son played as well and broke 80 with a 78. Neither of us lost a golf ball. LOL.

In no way trying to detract from his 75, great score, but doesn't slope affect how much that score will impact his handicap? If this score was shot on a low slope course, it won't have as significant of an impact, right? Either way, I'd have no hesitation in posting it.

When you're that close to the course rating (assuming it's somewhere near 70ish), the slope doesn't really mater that much. The differential may swing by ~1 between a really low to really high slope, and that carries to a difference of only .1 on the index.

No. Slope does not effect how it will effect his score...Course rating will, since it uses the differential between your score and the course rating. Slope is factored in only when determining your course handicap, based on your index.

Yes, the course handicap is determined simply by using the course's slope and your index.

But it's not true that slope does not effect your handicap calculation. The differential used in the calculation of your handicap is not simply your score minus the course rating. The differential for each score is calculated by subtracting the course rating from your (ESC adjusted) score, then multiplying by 113 and then dividing by the slope of the course you played. So the slope does have an impact on how a particular score will effect your handicap.

Edit: I meant to say "course handicap" and not "course rating" in my first sentence above, and I have now corrected it.

So if i am shooting consistant 85's on a 124 slope, I will have a lower index then another guy shooting 85 on a 113?

If so that makes a lot of sense, as I just re-established and was surprised at my index. (low side)

Exactly. If you can shoot consistent 85s on a high-slope course, you are a better golfer than someone who shoots consistent 85s on a low-slope course -- and your lower handicap should and will reflect that.

Sorry, but remember 8th grade?

Something AFFECTS something else. It may have an EFFECT on some other thing.

You cannot EFFECT something.

Okay, now start with the grammar Nazi accusations.

btw every round must be posted, and yes slope affects how the score affects your handicap. In other words, it has an effect.

But I'm sure my obsession with grammar is only an affectation.

An interesting and valuable lesson from the person who recently crafted the following fine sentence in another thread:

"Don't listen to anyone who tell you what to play. especially here."

Your syntax and capitalization are flawless.

(I'm inclined to agree with your "affectation" observation.)

That may be "by the book", but around here you have to negotate your strokes with your playing partners. I'd say if you are a 4, playing with a 5 and a 7 you would probably give 1 a side, maybe none with the guys I play with. Stingy bastards...
