Help!: Low spin head / shaft combo (158mph ball speed)

Recommended Posts

Looking for some input on a low spin club head shaft combo. A little background:

I am a pretty short person (5' 5") with short arms (32"). I generate decent club head and ball speed and have to do it without a lot of arc, so I generate my clubhead speed in a relatively short period of time. My driver angle of attack is about 1.5* on the postive side (hitting up on the ball).

Last year I was considering moving up in loft to reduce, but after being on trackman, the guy said I actually need to move down in loft given that I hit up on the ball with the driver.

I currently have two drivers, but they really don't perform that differently, which is surprising to me given the difference in loft and shart:

Driver A: 2007 Burner TP, 9.5* with a RE-AX 50 Stiff Shaft

Driver B: 2007 Burner TP, 8.5* with the TP-65 Rombax X-Stiff Shaft

The stats off of my Vector Pro are very consistent, the biggest difference being a swing Driver about 2 mph higher clubhead speed and about 3 mph ball speed. Other stats are very consistent:

Clubspeed = 109

Ballspeed = 158

Spin = 3400

Launch = 14.5

Desc Angle = 42

I can draw or cut either driver and the stats are not really impact that much.

Would love some thoughts on a better head / shaft combo.

Thanks!

Because of variation in production, those 2 drivers could have near identical lofts if checked by an accurate loft measurement device. That could be the reason you see know real difference.

A lower launching, lower spinning shaft would be a Prolaunch Red (cheaper) or a Diamana Whiteboard (more expensive). The whiteboard knocked 500 rpm spin and 2* of launch angle off of my shots on the launch monitor using the same 909D2 driver head.

A tip stiff shaft will help with spin reduction. The optimum spin for a 155 ballspeed is around 2600-2800 rpm based on a 40* angle of decent.

Some basic ideas:

Adams 9015D
Bridgestone j33r
Geek DCT*
Callaway FT-3 Tour
Cleveland Hi-Bore XL Tour
Mizuno MP-600

(*never tried this one)

PL Red
Whiteboard
Protopype
UST V2 (75 gram or higher)
AxivCore Green
Rombax Z series*
Project X

(*never tried it)

Shaft flex and loft are up to you, but I would experiment with tipping a stiff shaft, or at least reading up on the shaft specs to see if you could go with an x. Most of these can be had cheap here or on eBay.

EDIT: spelling

Shafts:I would definitely recommend trying Diamana 'ahina, Project X, Aldila RIP - these are probably the shafts that are common enough for you to find a good quality pullout here or on ebay if you're looking to save $ compared to new.

Heads:
Very much an individual preference, but I personally like the performance of the Cobra S2/S3/ZL drivers, the new Nike VR, and pretty much any of the TP Taylormade heads.

Driver A: 2007 Burner TP, 9.5* with a RE-AX 50 Stiff Shaft
Driver B: 2007 Burner TP, 8.5* with the TP-65 Rombax X-Stiff Shaft

Clubspeed = 109
Ballspeed = 158
Spin = 3400
Launch = 14.5

I have similar numbers and equipment as you:

Driver before: 2007 Burner 9.5 RE AX 50 Stiff
SS: 103
BS: 139
Spin: 3650
Launch: 16
AoA: -3.9
Desc: 42
Carry: 238
Total: 253

WIth the light shaft and high launching burner head I had to slow down my swing in order not to induce a tail fade. Even then my spin is so high that my drives have very little roll

Driver Now: 2007 Burner 9.5* Aldila NV-95s

SS: 107
BS: 155
Spin: 3000
Launch: 10.2
AoA: +0.5
Desc: 35
Carry: 263
Total: 292

I decided to install a super heavy 95g shaft with a higher bent point for a much lower launch. The heavier shaft also allowed me to swing much harder through the ball for a fuller extention and release without fear of that tail fade so my SS went up and now that I don't have to consciously slow the the club just before impact my Smash factor also improved as well as turning a negative AoA (Angle of Attack) to a positive one.

My next move would be to stick with the Aldila NV in a stiff flex but maybe go with a ligher 75g shaft and couple that to a Bridgestone J38 head in 8.5* to keep the trajectory low but allow me a to swing the club a little faster and see where it goes.

So try a heavier shaft with a high bend point and stiff tip first before you buy a new head. The Aldila NV's are pretty old and the Aldila store had them on clearance for $22 a pop so it was a no brainer experiment

Oban Devotion 6,7,8 are all low spin. I have the 7, and it is a monster.

My average ss is 112. Launch angle was right around 14 degrees with 2300 spin rate. I had my best #'s with the Titleist 910 D3 8.5 driver but still looking for a shaft that will get me in the 170mph range for ball speed. Right now mine averaged around 162 with a RIP Alpha Stiff. Here are the shafts I have so far to try:

Fujikura Motore Speeder 7.1 in X
House Of Forged Great White Shaft in X

Hopefully these 2 shafts will get me more ball speed and distance. Thoughts?

Your spin rate and launch angle are a bit too high. Ideally you would like to have a spin rate between 200-3200 and a launch angle between 12-14.
I hit a 10.5 burner that used to have the reax 50 stiff which created too much spin so i changed it out to an Aldila NV55 with a mid/high kick point and it really brought the spin rate down. I would try one in your burner

My numbers are similar to yours. I tried multiple R9 head and shaft versions. For me the superdeep with the rip alpha did the most to reduce spin and launch. I am currently trying an Adams 9064LS with a rip60 and a callaway FT-9 tour with a whiteboard 73 to see if I can get similar or better launch to kick the superdeep out of the bag.

A shaft I though I'd love but just didn't load quite hard enough was the GD Aura Red X flex (70g uncut). It held up strong to my best swings, was very low spin/tipp stiff and stable. It would probably be a great choice for me in a tipped S becuase I tend to build my speed slowly and load really late. Sounds like you could be a good candidate in X though.

This entire thread is in the wrong place. Average Joes do not swing over 105! Give us regular flex swingers at least one place to talk without all of you "players" worrying about your 300 yard misses.
