San Diego golf next week

Hey Gang,

I am going to be in San Diego next week and looking for some courses to play after business is done. I won't have easy access to a vehicle (I could rent one for a day) and we will be staying at 500 Hotel Circle which I think is right beside Riverwalk golf course. Debating playing Torrey Pines and just biting the bullet and paying the fees for at least one round...

Anyone have any advice or tips on courses to play...

Thanks,

Ken

Yeah...I have talked myself into playing at least one round at Torrey Pines...my hotel is only about 35 minutes away so gotta bite the bullet and pay the $200...

Barona looks interesting but 1.5 hours away may be a bit of jog...does look nice though.

Anyone else??

I am Canadian but went to School there for 3 years. Such a great city. God, I can't believe i've been banished back to Canada.
Check out Coronado Island/Beach, south of Downtown.... awesome area. La Jolla and Del Mar..... awesome. Rancho Santa Fe ridiculous.
The Bronx pizza in Hillcrest is great! Taco Surf in Pacific Beach..... also great. Regret not playing more golf when I was there...... too busy eating!

Enjoy!

The drive from your hotel to Barona is not 1.5 hours. It's roughly 30 min., 40 at the most. Barona is a nice course and the casino there is awesome. Great food, drinks, and gambling after your round.

Barona is definitely worth playing. Although it definitely is not 40 minutes away. Plan on 60-70 mins from Mission Valley.
If you play Riverwalk, try to get the Mission/Presidio combo. Those 2 nines are way better than the Friars 9.
If you want to play a cheap muni, Balboa Park is a good walk. About 15 minutes from Hotel Circle.

Guys are touting Coronado. It's great and all. Only problem is getting a teetime. The place is always packed

Other courses further away I would recommend... Mt Woodson, Rancho Bernardo Inn, Maderas, Aviara...many to choose from.

Check golfsd.com. Has great info.

IMO there are NOT many nice "public" tracks in SD. A 2nd vote for Steel Canyon CC east of SD in Jamal. North in Oceanside test your game at Arrowood GC in Oceanside. Always in good shape, not costly or really long but very challenging, especially from the black tees. If $ are not an issue consider Four Seasons Aviara in Carlsbad, just north - great shape, nice on the eyes, and a fun test. Private however there's The Bridges and The Farms in Rancho Santa Fe area.

edit: Coronado Golf Course is always in good shape, flat, easy to walk, and as stated hard to get a TT. Its for those reasons and that it's easy, it's not worth the effort IMO.

I am heading there in march. Never been. Looking for answers like you.

Looking for tough and nice check out Torrey Pines, Barona Creek, or even Mount Woodson.....
For cheap yet fun and well kept I like The Vineyard, Carlton Oaks, or even Doubletree.....
GolfNow.com usually has great deals on the last 4.

Anyway enjoy your time in SD and I hope this helps a bit.

If you are staying In hotel circle your best bet is going to be riverwalk.
Balboa and Coronado will be your next closest options
Balboa isn't worth it , and Coronado, it's a beautiful course on San dego bay, but even IF you get a time, the pace of play is usually intolerable, so I'd pass there too.
Your next closest option is gonna be Torrey in La Jolla
If you have your heart set on playing there, go ahead and shell it out, north or south it's a good time, but really it's just all about the satisfaction of saying " I played at Torrey Pines"
Equal distance to that but to the east is a course That an earlier poster recommend ...maderas in poway
Probably 25 min from mission valley and it's one of the higher end courses in San diego and a good challenge for less Than half of what your gonna pay at Torrey.
Those two are gonna be the best of the best.
Play maderas, and stop by Torrey on the way home and pick up a nice shirt with the difference!
Baron is amazing, as is Aviara, La Costa and Journey at Pechanga, but all of those are probably going to be a little too far for you to travel.
All the other course recommendations are either nice or good deals, but they probably aren't going to provide the wow factor that you're looking for.

there are many posts on this but in south county Steel Canyon is my fav. Salt creek is good. RiverWalk is ok, Coronado is a good Muni and right on the bay.

I was not a fan of Salt Creek. The fairways are absurdly tight, and you've got lots of blind tee shots with very small landing areas. Not incredibly fun for the 'first time' at the course! Also, you get the constant buzzing of the barely-overhead power lines. Cool scenery and elevation, though. You'll be right next to squirrels, roadrunners, and other various wildlife on some of the back nine!

For this mid-low price range, you also may want to check out the courses at Sycaun - Willow Glen and Oak Glen. Nice, fairly cheap, and pace should be reasonable. I play Sunday mornings in 4:30. Cartlon Oaks is nice, and tough. I've never played Riverwalk but have also heard that it's OK. It's three nines, right in the middle of the busiest part of the city and is more touristy than anything else... from what I've heard.
