2011 Phoenix City Amature Golf Championship

Anyone going to play in this?

Thinking about playing in this tournament this year, breaks down to $55/round for some tournament golf.

Each year, I want to sign up, but always seem to run into schedule conflicts. I think it would be fun, given that is is comprised of four rounds on four different courses.

If I dont play in this one, then I am for sure playing in the Mesa City Am. But I agree Tom, its a cool 4 day event, 4 courses, and pretty damn cheap for a tournament considering that the golf channel events are like 150+ for a single day.

I grew up a block north of Maryvale, grew up playing there, and even got shot at in the parking lot haha.

There has to be a story there... not too many golfers I know come armed... thank god! Can you imagine? Bad shot results in guy throwing club then pulling gun and shooting club like a skeet ?

Maryvale is a pretty notoriously bad neighborhood in Phoenix, and I wasn't even playing golf when I was shot at. My brother and I were skateboarding in the parking lot, just minding our own business. Well, on the south side of the parking lot, there's a bus stop on the bordering sidewalk, and there was a dude sitting at the stop. A car pulls up, starts shooting at the guy thats sitting there. Then the shooters see my brother and I just kind of looking at each other like "WTF?!" and the car jumps the curb and starts cutting across the parking lot after my brother and I. As we were running, we look over out shoulder and see the shooter hanging out the window! We jumped a fence and took cover behind a tree, and the car sped off. Just another day growing up in Maryvale haha.

The craziest thing wasnt even the shooting in broad day light on a crowed street, it was the fence my brother hurdled like a gazelle in full sprint haha. The fence is like 3 1/2 feet high, and I swear to god, he hurdled it. It was amazing! If anyone has played Maryvale, its the turquoise fence on the north side of the parking lot by the 18th hole. And if anyone plays there in the future, look at the fence and imagine jumping it on the run in a single bound hahah.

Another crazy thing was when I met my current wife, I was talking to her brother who had lived in Maryvale for awhile while stationed out at Luke air Force base, and I mentioned getting shot at in the parking lot at Maryvale. Low and behold, he had been shot at in the same parking lot as well. Small world, or just an incredibly s***y neighborhood.

My vote is incredibly Sh%%y area....I should know as well, its my first due at work..........

While I have worked in worse areas (South Central LA 86-91 and Oakland 91-94)....Maryvale definitely has its "bad" moments.....

Great story.... I use to work part time at Maryvale back in the early 90's. What you speak of is no joke... I use to carry my Glock 19 in my bag when I would go there.

Have you guys signed up for this.... I am thinking about signing up.
It says something about a verified handicap 60 days old.... I just renewed my AGA handicap, dormant since 2009. Now it says I have been a member since 2008, should be good, I hope...

Only course I have not played is Cave creek, might be looking to make a road trip up there for a practice round.

What say you...

glad I didn't play this year, as my handicap at the time of sign-up would've gotten my a** handed to me haha. The 1-4 bracket though, next year!

Kevin, how bout the mesa city AM this year at dobson ranch? I think I can swing that one.

Mark, What are the dates again... I have to run in the warrior dash with the family on 30 Apr and I am playing in a home and home against Nellis on May 6-8. "O" and I'm playing in the Az Sunset Golf assc at Southern Dunes on Apr 16th... great group of guys and they play a nice track every month. Dues are 65.00 a year and you get the AGA handicap... If anyones interested let me know and I can get you more info.

Wow... two things come to mind. Aquila really hurt some guys, and Ken Kellaney is still playing competitive golf... He was kicking people asses since the early 90's. Kind of like RW Eaks before he went pro.

Pmd i played duke this previous weekend and absolutely fell in love with the place only downside is its a 45 minute drive for me.

The Duke is a very underrated course. The surrounding tract home scenery is not great but the course itself is solid. Very interesting and varied greens & surrounds. And the widest playing corridors in the state!

I think the Duke absolutley nailed it on the par 3's perfect selection you have a short iron, mid iron, mid/long iron, and long iron/hybrid/fwywood distance depending on your distances. IMO perfect mix of yardages on the par 3's. The thing that makes it tough to play is the fact that Southern Dunes is such a good course and most people would rather make that drive and play the dunes.

Same thing could be said about Southern dunes par three's... At the Dunes you have short, mid, mid to long, and just damn long. Funny thing is you have the short and damn long one a hole apart. Hole 4 (130ish) Hole 6 (240ish)...
