How to Remove smoke odor/cigarette smell from golf bag?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure where to put this topic but does anyone know how to remove/eliminates cigarette smell/oder from golf bag?

I recently bought a used golf bag and didn't know about the smoke until it arrives. It comes from a super heavyweight smoker and smell like an ash tray. I don't smoke, quit years ago, so the smell is really bothering me. I've Febreze the crap out of it but it still smells. Any tips/idea?

Thank you,

Steve

My wife bought a fake plant from a house with heavy smokers. She tried to let it air out...but that didn't work. I suggested Lysol spray as it seems to "kill" the odor. Hell, it worked for me when I needed to kill the smoke smell from my clothes when I'd come home from the bars late at night during college. Well...it worked for us.

There are some other solutions out there...I think one involves vinegar. http://www.howtodothings.com/home-and-garden/a4685-how-to-remove-cigarette-odor.html

fill up your bathtup and wash the bag in it. I did that to a bag that had been sitting around collecting dust for years. You'l have to fill the tub a few times to rinse it
Isn't that can ruin the bag, or not? The bag just a simple stand bag, not leather or anything. How long did it take to dry?

I might try Lysol then give it a full body wash if that doesn't work.

I would sell the bag and get a new one. No matter what you do to clean it, you will probably always smell it. If the smell is that offensive to you, why continue dealing with it?
Well, because I got it for a decent price and I love to tinker around. I mean I used to smoke and I have friends that smoke during round but man, I have no idea the odor can be that strong on this bag.

why would it ruin it, are the materials washable? like nylon etc. btw, try adding a touch of frabric softener , like sheet or whatever to the water as well. It will make your bag softer after it air drys

btw, to all these people saying throw it away, lol. do you throw away a t shirt cause it smells like smoke or do you throw away a nylon carry chair because you spilled a drink on it?

You've bought Febreeze and "febreezed the crap out of it" and spent time going into a forum and asking how to get rid of the smoke. You can get a new Titleist Stand Bag for about the price of a Vokey wedge.

No smoke residue and a new bag of your color choice.

No?

True however I didn't know the bag comes with extra flavour until it arrived. :russian_roulette:

You should be able to wash it -- any golf bag worth a crap is designed to be able to be used in the rain, so there should be no problem with getting it wet.

To those suggesting that he throw it away and buy a new one, that's amazingly wasteful, and not everyone has the $ to spend willy nilly on golf equipment, despite the impression that you may get from hanging out at this site.

No, by all means hang on to it. If he's having a bad round he can just lick the nicotine off the thing and get a buzz. Which by all accounts is faster then waiting for the cart girl and cheaper.

Ok. Thank you for everyone that replied. I think I'll do the Lysol, then full bath it if the smel still there. Hmm, while I'm at it, I might as well wash my main bag. Hmm . . .

Thank you once again,
Steve

Ground up some coffee beans and put them in a sock. Hang the sock from one of the dividers and let it sit in there for a few days. My wife and I bought a used car for a steal of a price, but it reeked like smoke. We tried a bowl of vinegar in there for days, and while that helped, still no dice. I read about the coffee beans trick and that, once and for all, took care of the smell.

Sure, your bag will then smell like coffee for a bit, but I reckon it's better than smoke and the smell of coffee doesn't linger for centuries like smoke does.

Lots of good suggestions here, but I'd also check all the pockets to see if one of them is the source. I pick up any butts I can find from the inconsiderate bozos that toss them all over the course, and if I am not riding I throw them in the "scorecard pocket" on my Ogio. After the round I toss an open box of Arm and Hammer in the pocket and it does the trick pretty well. Might not kill it fully but it definitely does soak up a lot of the smell.

I'm sure that doing a combo of the tactics in this thread can get it so it's usable for you. Don't toss it.

this - the same thing I used to do when my clothes reeked after a night at the bars (pre-marriage, pre-kids) - I used cheesecloth, but a sock will work as well, I suppose - just threw it in the hamper with the clothes and after a wash, no more smoke smell - unfortunately, not even a good wash will always get the smoke smell out...

EDIT: one of the more interesting threads I've seen on here, actually.

haha well, not everyone has wads of cash to spend on a bag. The market price on new bags is insane if you ask me.

yes the coffee beans work.. there is also a product called Ozium, it really works. It eats almost all odors, and really does a number on smoke, ive been using it for years. You can get it at almost all auto parts stores like kragen/pepboys/etc.

+1, because you're more likely to get a slap than a buzz after licking the cart girl.

I really like the fact that you can no longer smoke inside bars. But the very few that allow it I have never had to do anything outside of washing to get rid of the smell.

I'm assuming what he's talking about is years of heavy cigarette exposure, or even being left in a room with stagnant smoke over and over. It can definitely be tough, and I feel his pain. I definitely couldn't handle that.

AMAZINGLY wasteful? A golf bag? You toss around hyperbole like Charlie Rymer on the golf channel.

I recommended a new one. Cigarette smoke is something I wouldn't even bother with. It's THAT bad. I'd rather it smell like dog doo. That's why I'd get a new one. Besides, stand bags are about $135...which makes them cheaper than about anything INSIDE the bag. But I play golf 3x per week so refusing to smell cig smoke would not constitute "willy nilly spending"

Heck the guy is hanging out here, he's not your twice-a-year golfer.

Do whatcha like. For the record I also throw away golf gloves after a 8-9 rounds. If you want me to save them for you, PM me. j/k ;)
