Isn't this the golf equivalent to asking guys 'how big is your junk' on an internet forum?

1) who cares

2) who doesn't assume most guys aren't fudging 'just a little' with their distances

Honestly, one thing i don't understand, it's that i am longer with my driver than a couple of you here (275-285) but i can't match your distance with the short irons ???I can't move my 54* over 100yards, even if i swing it as hard as i can...
Are you a picker / sweeper? I have friends who hit their drivers the same distance as me but they hit their irons a half to a full club longer. The difference is that they compress the ball more / take more of a divot. I've made some changes to promote more "shaft lean" at impact and I'm hitting the irons a bit further. That's not necessarily the goal, but it is a nice result.
I have read other posters here on golfwrx saying that diggers are inherently longer hitters in irons than sweepers. This makes absolutely no sense. Distance is purely a matter of swing speed, which is generated/optimized through technique and generating lag. It has nothing to do with the size of divot taken, or lack thereof. The divot is taken AFTER the club strikes the ball.

Sweepers and diggers both "compress" the ball. If you don't believe that, then you must also believe that a ball is NOT compressed with a driver. Obviously not true.

Digging does not increase shot distance with your irons. Digging does increase spin by "trapping" the ball, but the increased spin is not helping your distance.
One reason why diggers might hit their irons longer is they are actually de-lofting their irons at impact. Sergio comes to mind. Two guys can have the exact same swing speed with a 7 iron but if one of them de-lofts that 7 iron at impact....he'll hit it a few yards past the other guy.
+1 You are correct. Just turning a 7 iron into a 6 iron, etc. Plus many factors contribute to higher
spinning shots. Trapping is not one of them. There is no trapping of the ball unless you have
an iron with negative loft.
Ok, rather than be ambigous, what are these "many factors contribute to higher spinning shots"? No trapping unless you have an iron with negative loft? What?? Please explain. How about if we use the word "pinch" instead of "trap"? How do you think spin is created?

Sorry, but you are not right. Trapping has lots to do with creating spin.

Spin is created by hitting down on the ball, thereby pinching or trapping it against the turf creating additional backspin. But, please don't take "hitting down on the ball" literally, like you did my "trapping" comment.

By the way, yes, delofting does help on distance, but delofting occurs as a result of leading with your hands. That technique is not exclusive to diggers. Sweepers can lead with the hands as well.

Club head speed, angle of attack, grooves and so on affect spin. There was a fairly
long thread on here about trapping/pinching the ball. I don't remember what the title
was now. High speed photog shows the ball climbing the iron face immediately as
opposed to going into the ground and being pinched between the club and ground.
Sorry, didn't mean to sound so terse.

I've been dogging myself lately because my distance isn't what it used to be. I know I still hit it better than the avg golfer, but I still can't help comparing my game today to my game of just few short years ago. I tend to hit a high ball with lots of spin. I've always been long off the tee, and have always hit my irons short compared to people I play with. Typically I outdrive or match drives with them, but I am usually at least one club shorter on my irons, often 2. I fully understand that my lofts are usually weaker, but even this doesn't account for all of it. Most of the guys I play with range from 7 handicap to +2. That being said I'd much rather gain more accuracy than pick up some yardage.

Same here. I avg 285-290 off the tee but my 9 iron goes 130. I usually never swing hard with irons exept long irons but even when I do I still can't get them very far.

I enjoy reading these post, mostly because I play at TPC Harding Park in SF. TPC HP is AT sea level, with heavy air and most of the time it's in the upper 50's, low 60's. It's hilarious to see guys that come from all over the place eat some "humble pie" when they don't drive the ball 285 off the tee (or hit "3 wood" 280 all day") because of the conditions. Just totally cracks me up and I'm just laughing inside.

"Distance" for the sake of distance is over-rated. "Distance control" is where it's at.

Cheers y'all!

Boy did I find this to be true. I play at just under 4,000' of elevation. When we were playing north of Houston at sea level, it really is eye-opening (and humbling too I guess). Little 170 yarder downhill, at home is a little seven or a hard eight and now its' a stock six or a little five, and you have to bust driver to get it out to 270. Think I'll stay at elevation so I can delude myself into thinking I'm longer than average (and keep the ego up).

    • Titleist GT drivers - 2024 the Memorial Tournament
Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
