Toe droop plays a small role here. Modern clubs have the Cog further from the heel/more toward the toe. In theory they will droop more.. in effect flattening the lie angle. Also in theory the flatter a lie is the less it should droop as the shaft deflects into impact, again because the cog is closer to the hosel with a flatter lie angle.. vs the same iron with a more upright lie.

If you don't play em 10* flat, x7 shafts tipped 2 inches, negative bounce, but weakened two degrees to make bounce zero while making the club appear to be "onset" (i.e. negative offset), with sweet spot two inches up the face, and obvi blades, you'll never be a player.

The reality of the situation is that OEM's would go bankrupt selling clubs standard as you described. The average joe plays less than 30 times a year and uses off the shelf equipment for the most part. Golf has done a great job of reinvigorating interest in the game and getting more people involved. This is more avrrage joes and janes.

 

These peoe arent going to spend thousands of dollars on lessons to learn great swing technique. They just want to play a couple of times a month. They have hobbies in addition to golf and spend budget on all of them.

 

OEMs cant be profitable selling just to we fanatics with "correct" loft and lie they have to sell to the masses. And, we, the fanatics can get our equipment tailored correctly much more easily now. I remember back in the day, i could walk onto courses and see noone as golf literally was almost dead.

 

For my part, I'm 6'4" and play 3* upright and 1" long. Me with 3* flat would require sticks much longer to achieve your desired lie angles

Has a lot to do with your setup and grip, as well , A player that stands tall with little knee bend and and has a grip mostly in the Palm kinda like nicklaus will have a more upright lire angle then a guy that bends his knees and grips the clubs more in the fingers.

 

I play 1/2" over 2 degrees upright and I am only 6'1" but I have short arms and longer legs

What is it that makes the flatter lie angles better than normal for those that think that way? Is it the flatter lie angle forces the player to bend more at the waist to sole the club flat at address which for some means they can get into a better athletic position and causes the players swingto change? I know for me I hit the ball better with flatter lie angles but I know my setup and swing changes because the way the club looks to me I can’t stand up taller and more comfortable because the toe is clearly hanging down. But with a more upright club I stand taller which feels more comfortable but then in the swing I almost stand up more through impact to try and stay balanced. I can hit the flatter clubs better as far as direction and consistent contact,but the upright clubs feel more comfortable at address and through the swing, but my swing gets more upright and slightly over the top. For me I actually fade upright clubs and draw flatter clubs but it’s because my setup and swing change to match the equipment.

Maybe I’m just crazy though.
