What do you endure to get to the course?

Recommended Posts

I know some of us have families, some have jealous wives, some have church 3x a week - what do you have to endure to get to the golf course on a weekly basis?

Taking up golf in NYC again after a long hiatus made me realize how lucky I was as a kid to be a member of a golf club in the south, that was practically in my back yard. A typical weekend in Brooklyn is taking 2 buses to the course - with a transfer in a really dirty area with questionable inhabitants (yeah i'm the blond girl on the corner with the golf clubs ;)) The ride is an hour to hour and twenty total depending on buses. If I had a car it'd take 15 minutes to drive the distance.

I used to take the bus to a practice facility in the middle of the East River when I lived in Harlem. It was well known that the mental facilities on this island let their inmates take the same bus into manhattan and back. Sweet jesus. Good times.

I understand completely. Where are you playing, Marine Park or Dyker? It takes me about an hour to get to Dyker via N/R train. It sucks but it is a breeze compared to getting to the courses in the Bronx. Young lady like yourself, I don't recommend traveling alone thru south Bronx. Marine Park isn't that far but the trip--4 train to the end, q35 bus slowly down flatbush ave--is painful. Going to Randall's island late at night is pretty scary, its quite dark getting there and just imagining inmates hiding in the dark crevices...yikes. Much rather go to Chelsea even though its a rat cage. Gawd it sucks being a golfer here.

I must admit I have it pretty good. I live in the Palm Springs area which has well over 100 golf courses that are less than 1/2 hour away and there are at least 10 courses that are less than 5 miles from my house(and we don't have traffic).

My cross to bear is our extreme heat in the summertime. Golf is dirt cheap in the summer but 115F temps are common in July and August. I played this morning at 6am and it was pleasant outside but it hit 105F by noon and it is still april.

I'm sure others have it much worse...good thread!

My club is 2 miles from my office and 5 miles from my house. I can even go over there at lunchtime to putt or hit a few balls on the range. Best part is showing up after work and walking 9, or more, depending on daylight. Kids are grown and out of the house now so my wife is understanding as long as I keep somewhat of a balance with my time. In peak season that means a Saturday plus two weekday evenings, with maybe a Sunday afternoon every now and then.

Like the OP I used to play in NYC. Grew up in queens and played the courses there, once I was old enough to drive I would go super early (5am) to put my name down and hope to tee off before 9. Now I'm in NJ and my county has no muni courses so I drive 20 minutes to another county but I paid the $$ to allow me to make tee times before the county members, well worth it.

If I want to go play, I go play. Wife might complain but ehh. She'll be fine in 4 hours and forget about it.

It takes me 3 minutes to get to the club. 3 stop signs, and 4 turns.

I like your attitude. I hope my future gf/wife will be ok with playing like yours.

To answer the OP, my club is like 10 minutes from my house but directly on the way home from work so I go everyday to hit balls or play as long as it's not raining or dark :D. No gf or anything atm so I spend a lot of time there haha.

Life used to be simple but then I got married and had a kid. Love the life but free time on the weekend is like gold!
I work for myself doing construction work. Work is slow so when I get a day off during the week, I hit the course. I have a couple of buds who can get off work pretty easy, so I have somebody who can join in most all the time.
As far as getting to the course, I live in the country, but there is a course only about 4 miles from my house. One stop sign and 5 turns and I'm there. Within a 20 mile radius there are about 8 courses with very little traffic.

Let's see: Leave the office on Friday night and try to get out of Olathe KS in rush hour traffic down i-35. Drive for a while, exit right, take 2 round abouts, drive for a while, take another right, drive for a while, take a left, take a right after 2 mi, drive for 20 min through construction, take a left, drive for 3 mi, take a left, pull left into driveway, arrive at my dad's house. Sleep 8 hours, play golf on Saturday and Sunday. I am a member at a course that is 3 hours away from me.

That being said, I practice at a facility that is 4 min from my work.
