Ping Eye 2 irons

Its fact that these were one of the best irons ever made, was curious about buying a set just to see. Not bad prices on the bay. ....anyone who still plays them or has played them your thoughts?

I still play them a few times a year, my set from high school in the 90's.  They are just as good as anything out there, just add one club due to weaker than current lofts.  Some folks balk at the offset, but as a kid of the 80's it doesn't bother me.  Fairways and greens!!!

Have a set , played them last season, have other sets of old pings too.  The original shafts are stiff.  So a factor to consider.  I’ve reshafted mine with graphite.

Still have a set of Eye 2+ (2 iron-LW) that Ping refinished for me and re-shafted with Project X PXi a few years ago. They look much newer than you would expect from a 1993 set.

 

Played them a few times each year mainly for the nostalgia but I think they are still as good as anything if you match loft for loft. Basically the Eye2+ 6 iron (31*) is the modern day 7 iron loft so just have to ignore the number on the club and play the loft. They are still my favorite iron I've ever played. Have owned 3 sets in my 40 years of golf.

 

Those clubs are still great. My spine hasn't held up nearly as well.

Got a BeCu set a few years ago. As a digger, they are not the best for me. Still enjoy hitting them a few times a year, but prefer the modern high bounce G iron. The SW is a permanent fixture in the bag, love that club.

Hope you like em. I picked a set of v-groove this past Jan.  They are still in the bag.  Playing really well with them.  Shot a 69 with them three days before I turned 71. So with that you can see why they’re still in the bag.   
 

things for you to be aware of.   
they’re light and usually a stiff shaft in the early years.  Get some lead tape and start adding as you go along till happy. 
pretty much a dig sole on mine and you have to be careful when it’s soft out.  But they excell in the rough 

they are far weaker than current standards.  My pw is 50.7° and the set sw is nearly 58°.   A seven degree gap but so far it’s ok.  
 

for me they fly pretty high so get used to that.

Somewhat in this boat, but my double backup set in NJ, and backup in FL, are my beloved PING ZING2 Orange Dot 5-W, S, and S/L Wedges with JZ stiff. Like other posters note, just take an extra club. Take these out a lot, but most days it's my G430's (with CFS Stiff) or i210's (Modus 115 R). Kirk Triplett and Westwood, played the ZING 2's for years, and think Lee still plays the JZ.

I don't always play golf left-handed, but when I do, I play with PING Eye 2's.

I still have my college golf team bag from 1988. Ping bags are basically indestructible.

I have a set that I occasionally play.  Mine have been bent 2 degrees strong to make them roughly a club shorter than my current gamers.  I had them re-shafted with graphite.  They still perform great.  I could easily sell my gamers and play the Pings all the time.

Pulled this set of Eye 2+ BeCu's out of the USA bag and into my regular use bag a few days ago.  Have tried so many graphite shafted irons over the years and can't find any that I can depend of distance consistency with.  At 77 yrs old, should be using graphite, I guess.  Gotta play what works, though.  Seem to always go back to these BeCu (1995) or my Eye 2 SST (1984).  Score better than with "modern" irons.  I have the BeCu Anser 4, shown in the USA bag, that goes to the course with these clubs.  Also an Anser 4 SST that goes with the SST Eye 2's.  Sorta OCD...:>)

Eye2, Eye2+, Zing2 and ISI. Any of these with the right shaft could be gamed with pleasure to this day. Karsten was a genius. All of these won for years on tour “back in my day”.

I just picked up a set, 6-PW, of ISIs from a store on eBay for $61.00. Can't wait till they get here.

I had 2 or 3 sets of iSi BeNi's some time ago.  Loved the soft feel.  Son-in-law has a set of iSi BeCu 1-LW.  They came through WRX with S400 DG shafts.  I picked them up for him in like new condition in '97.  He doesn't play them anymore, but still has them.  The SST iSi's were a little larger blade than the BeNi or BeCu.  All 3 or the iSi  versions were amazing!!!

"Karsten was a genius..."  If you haven't already, try to find the book "And the Putter Went...Ping" book.  Amazing story of Karsten from his early days with GE, his inventions back then that had nothing to do with golf and the journey into starting/running one of the most successful golf equipment manufacturers.  He and his wife did so much for the Game of Golf, the LPGA, etc.  The book is HUGE!  If you begin reading it you will read a few pages and say, "What did I just read?"  You'll go back and read it again.  Kids gave me one for Christmas about 3 years ago.  It has been read by at least a half dozen of my golf acquaintances and sits on the coffee table in our downstairs family room.

I have two sets.  A 2-PW and a BeCu 1-SW.   I would still be happy to be gaming either set.  You just have to club up because of the weaker lofts but if you take ego out of the equation, it's not a big deal.
