What club do you use for the 175 yard shot?

These 8-iron 175's are crazy. I like to think I drive the ball a long way (a legit 280-290 with maybe 1 or 2 300+ yarders per round Bay Area sea level), but I only hit my 8-iron 155-160, couldn't get my 7-iron there and would probably have to hit a slightly less than full 6.

175 with an 8-iron only if was an RBZ... wait I would get 17 extra from that too, right?
I used to think that only pros could hit an 8 iron 175 as well... This year my game has really stepped up a notch and when im striking the ball well and have perfect condtions (no wind, 80 degrees, etc) I can step on an 8 and carry 175. My routine golfing buddy has measured more than a few shots this year to confirm (using Skycaddie)... Irons are stock Adams A12 with KBS tour shafts.

I play with a few big hitters that can pound the ball off the tee but are a good 1 club shorter than me with irons so its possible. Keep in mind that with a driver you are using a large forgiving head that can cover up a slight mis-hit. With an iron theres not much help.
Yeah, there's no question many guys can hit it this long, so I by no means am questioning anyone posting here. I'm by far the longest driver of the broader group of guys I play with (20 guys), outdrive them on average by a good 20-40 yards but am only a club longer than them on irons. Fighting a flip too doesn't help.

My first taste was playing in the Publinx a few years ago and a former college player I was paired with was hitting his 6-iron on 200 yard part 3's while I was going after them with 4-iron's. 2 clubs longer than me consistently. It was a 90 degree day on a firm course and I was outdriving him all day with 300+ drives, but man the way he hit his irons was a real eye-opener for me.

Believe me, I envy long iron players more than long drivers.

Last year I would of said a nice 7 iron, but for some reason this year I am nuking my irons. So now its normal 8. I am 46, so I not getting amy younger. The only thing I switched was balls. I went from a Pro V to a Pro Vx. I would think that would help a bit with a little less spin.

Ive never personally see someone carry an 8iron 175 yards in normal weather conditions, going by that you must carry a 5iron at least 220?!?!?! Thats my 6iron carry and im not short, i could prob get a 7iron close to that if i really stepped on it, but a normal lofted 8iron, hells no!
I just tend to deloft a bit on my irons, plus I am very strong and flexible (starting doing yoga last fall and that really seems to help). RIght now I would say my 5 iron is about 210 and the 4 iron about 220. Sadly, all that distance doesn't make the ball go in the hole more:-)

if anyone says anything but it depends, then they are not telling the truth. there are many different situations that are the same difference and require totally different clubs. from 175, you could hit a sw to a 3 wood, depending on conditions.

No wind, flat ground, true 175 yards.....a solid 7 iron. Obviously we don't get those conditions often, so 175 yards could be an 8 iron or 9 iron and it could also be a 6 iron or 5 iron. Conditions vary and shots vary.

a ripped driver or an easy lob wedge, depending on the condtions and which direction the hurricane is blowing the ball

Perfect 7 for me, but I don't quite understand the topic since distance will vary greatly between most people. I have a pet peeve on the course when someone asks me what I hit on a par 3. I tell them I hit my 175 club. It bugs me when they ask which club it was to help them, when I don't know them so how would that help them.

Maybe they are not asking to help them (because how could it). Maybe they are just asking out of curiosity or just to ask.

That wouldn't bother me. It's when they hit the same club as me when they don't know my distances or their own for that matter, and they end up short. Just one of those things.
