Maybe its time to get the new skool (yuch) driver

Recommended Posts

I'm getting back into the game at 54, was a 8-9 handicap, now about a 13-15. Hoping to get back to single digits. Not a super fast swinger, I rely on long arms, good turn, timing. That said, guys who are 60-65 are blowing the ball past my 250 yd ol skool Great big bertha drives, with their Rocket balz etc., even when I make a good swing. So I'm in market for modern driver with some GI features, I like the traditional look but will give it up for the yards, what are you gaming for Xtra yards?

A bunch of 60-65 yr olds are blowing by 250? Wow.

Most all newer (1-3 yr old) drivers will serve you well. Ping, Callaway, Nike, Cobra etc... Would all fit the bill.

I would recommend going to a professional fitter and getting a driver/shaft setup for YOU and your swing. Not that much difference with all the big OEM heads, but worlds of difference when thoses heads are married to specific shafts. I finally broke down, last fall, and spent what amounts to about the cost of a round at a nice course on a fitting and can honestly say, "The best money I have ever spent on my golf game."
Changed my loft, lowered by 2 degrees, flex, stiffened, and flexpoint, lowered, while increasing the yardage and accuracy.
BTW, where are these 60-65 cats blowing it by 250???? If it's something in the air, or water, I want some.

+1 Oldschoolrocker.

I am one of those 60-65 guys (63) and can do the 275 yds with Taylormade R7 and/or R9. I would do better with a proper fit, all of mine are "off the rack".

That being said, I am currently going back to the Oldies. It is not the distance off the tee that matters, it is what you do then. I am an 11 and my best golf buddy is a 4. I can out drive him by 20, but from there on in he absolutely smokes me. Everything he hits off the fairway is a laser into any green, while I am off the green or in the bunker. I scramble to get up and down, while he casually 2 putts for the par.

My theory is the older smaller drivers have smaller sweet spots that help promote a better swing and ball contact. The sweet spot on irons is about the same size as a shallow face persimmons. Therefore, you have to have a good swing. Then you will hit the irons in the sweet spot more consistently. Overall I look for a better total game.

But, if you want to go jumbo, take OldSchool's advice about fitting with head and shaft matchings.

Just My Opinion.

As mentioned, most of the newer Heads will do the job. Find one you can stand looking down at and

Get Fitted!!!!

I play with my boys, son in law etc, they all out drive me by a considerable margin.

But they still can't beat me.

Land the drive in the fairway, hit the green, get up and down when you miss it.

Distance is a wonderful thing but highly over rated. Best short game wins.....
