Played the Tips at Bethpage Black

So I played the back part of ever back tee box (blue tees werent out so we decided to play the tips), course probably played around 7700yds. On the card its right around 7500 but they added in new tee boxes behind a few of the posts. I shot 83 and it came up as a 3 handicap on the ghin system which I found hard to believe. I think I had more 6's on my card then I have ever had, I think 5 of them, lol. It was a pretty ugly round for me especially with some major swing problems occuring due to my swing being too long. Slope rating is a 152 and 78.1 rating.

I have played the black course tons of times considering I grew up in the area but I never played the tips. Played with an asistant pro from one of the courses out east on long island and he shot 76.

Great round had by all, even the caddy said he hadnt seen anyone play 3 of the tee boxes we played on some of the holes all season.

FYI, the course was in immaculate shape and all the grandstands were up for the Barclays tournament occuring there in August, course closes august 6th for the full prep. The NY state open was just the 17th thru the 19th so everything was in tip top shape. The rough was also ridiculously thick, 6+ inch status, besides the fescue I was in several times also.

My feet and legs were soar by the end of the round. Great experience besides almost getting hit by a club thrown by one of the other two singles that joined up. Just wanted to share with the community. This is the first season back after a 5 year layoff, besides the 2 outings I would play in a year, looking to play some amateur tournaments next season, so this was my year from prep and practice. Overall great day.

That is a pretty damn good score!! Especially at that distance. How did you guys find the ball with the rough so long?

What is so great about bandon? I've watched videos, it just looks hella windy.
[/quote]

Well we were both spotting the ball plus I grabbed a caddy to carry my bag for the day since I wanted to go to the gym that night, so he was fore caddying at times, plus if it was in the rough, it wasn't far into the rough the majority of the time. Plus the 4 some helped everyone out at all times searching.

Awesome score on that course, especially for the tips. Doesn't surprise me it came up as 3. Crazy rating. Glad u didn't get hit with that thrown club!

Love the Black. 15 is such b*tch of a hole.... I last played in October two years ago. It was cold and windy. 15 into the wind is a monster! Driver to 3 wood, and I was short. Absurd.

The tees are NEVER back. I remember teeing off and seeing so many tee boxes just out of nowhere.

Yhea, that's a great score for sure. I played there last weekend (from the whites - around 6700 yds. slope = 145) and shot a 87...missed 4 short putts... :( There was a group of guys ahead of us playing from the blue tees (around 7200) and on several occasions they didn't reach the fairway - in most cases if you don't reach the fairway, you're in the deep stuff! The course was in overall great shape - except for the third green - some bare/bumpy patches (one of which I had to putt through) I can't imagine it won't be fixed for the Barclay's though.

Played there for the first time yesterday.... Read through a bunch of threads here before going down to get a sense of it and that turned out to be a waste of time.... nothing can compare to seeing it in person.

Tough go out of the gates, the courses were closed on Saturday because of all the rain, so there was no roll off the tee and the rough was as penal as any course I've ever played....Got myself back on track from 7 on and managed an 85 (6 index) .....

You can't understand just how far you need to hit the ball off the tee and how having 180 to a green 20 ft in the air surrounded by monster bunkers is so different than the 5 iron you might hit at your home course.....

What sticks in my mind is the absolute enormity of the site.... the 16th fairway looks like a ribbon from the tee but I paced it off at 35 yards! It's huge but looks so small compared to the surrounding area.....

Looking through the trees and across the road from 14 green at what awaits is also going to stick in my mind for some time.... you'd better find a way to make up the stroke you're going to lose on 15!

Great time and for anybody reading this... there's a damn good reason for the sign on the fence by the first tee....

Glad you had a good time. 15-18 is really a gauntlet. Earlier this year I was 7 over before I crossed the road to 15, I finished at 12 over. Those closing holes are extremely difficult, and it never helps that you've already walked 5 miles over hill and valley by the time you reach 15 tee. Lots of tired swings on that side of the road.

I played the tips as well, only once though and then it was back to the blues. It was a fantastic experience to see and walk the course as the pros do. Bethpage Black is a national gem, just a stunning track. What is really amazing is when you are on the green and look back to the tee to see the terrain you covered. WOW! I don't think most people appreciate what kind of shape a pro needs to be in to walk this course four days in a row, it is a brute from the tips.
