What do you do when you're in a putting slump?

I'm usually a pretty solid putter, most of the time I have about 28-30 putts, but lately I've been in a slump. Averaging round 36 putts per round. Anyways, I'm thinking of shaking things up and using a different putter for a while to see if I can shake things up. Just looking to see if anyone else does this to break out of their slumps

Different putters, cross handed, left handed, different address positions, look at the hole, close your eyes and probably a whole bunch of other things. The main thing is to break the bad habits and then go back to basics (for you) and the good putter should reappear.

I've always been a good putter. Until this year. Coming out of winter on a March golf trip to Florida (not played since November) I had more three putts than probably all of last year. I wrote it off to rust. Well while things did improve. I simply struggled. I tried different putters from the "wall of putters". Bought a new putter that provided only temporary relief. And it wasn't like I was not spending time on the practice green. Then I tried shortening shafts. Fat grip. Fatter grip. ARGHH! Finally three weeks ago after the first round of a club tournament I drove to the big box store and spent a good hour or more testing various putters. From the chin to the knees. Blades and mallets. Cheap and expensive.
I finally found a putter that got me back to my normal set-up and allowed me to putt without thinking. Pick my line and stroke it. Got my speed back which was what was killing me.
So in my case it took a different putter.
Don't be afraid of change.

This is why I built a belly in the exact same putter that I have in 34". Whenever the regular length gets a bit crazy, I go to the belly and it changes all the bad habits. I usually go to the belly for a couple practice sessions and it works out all the bad habits I was using.

Dang.....changing putters.......no way. I normally average around 29-30 putts per round. When they stop falling I head to the putting green. I align an alignment stick about 4 ft from the hole in a parrallel line on a flat putt. I stroke about 20 putts along the line into the hole, move back a few ft repeat, until I'm about 15ft from the hole. Then I take the same stroke and hit about 30 putts of varying long distance. Done.

When I use the algnment stick I'm seeing my putter going back along the stick line. Straight back, straight through. when I pick up the stick I can still see that straight back striaght through line. It works wonders and it's lots cheaper then a new putter. Other then that I hardly ever practice putting. Maybe 30 minutes per week...at the most. Some weeks none at all, though I'm on the range 5-6 days a week.

No reason to buy a new putter..................***duck****.....some WRX'r will start throwing things in a second.

sleep with your putter - talk to it - works for baseball players - or do a voo doo ceremony with a snake like in Major League - "Jobu no hit curve ball"...

Doing something stupid and immature takes your mind off the real issue and by then you are cured...

Good luck - and do not buy a new putter - that is bad therapy

Same way here, I go work the practice green with some set drills that include alignment sticks and then I sink 100+ 4 footers on a flat surface, working my way around the hole 50 putts at time - I stop when I sink 40/50 twice in a row.Once I used to hearing the ball drop in the hole, I then work on my lag drill where I set up tees at 10', 20', 30', 40' and 50 ' I then putt to each tee working my way up short to long, then long to short, then random each time working the drill until I can get through it 4 times with every put inside 3'. I might do this several times

First and foremost I go back to the three drills that are part of my copyrighted lesson plan. Just like going back to fundamentals you have to break down the bad habits that got you into the slump.

I'm fortunate enough to have captured my best putting on the SAM PuttLab and can do a test and compare the results to see where I'm now going wrong.

I've got quite a few sessions with golfers who have never seen the results of their initial test. We've just filed the results away until such a time as their stroke breaks down.

Problem? No Problem!
