Over-seeding: Here it comes....

Recommended Posts

Most of the courses here in Vegas are in crappy condition right now. They are drying everything up for over-seeding.

I played Tuscany on Saturday. Usually, the grass is green as is gets. Saturday was splotchy and dry all over.

Even my home course is bone dry.

Are you guys experiencing similar conditions in your home town?

I've never seen a course open for over-seeding. Most of the courses here in Tucson are 1-3 weeks, but few are for a full month or 2.

My mistake. We still have another 3-4 weeks until over-seeding.

We've been getting a lot of rain here in the southeast.

I actually played Tuscany back in May while in vegas for my brother's bachelor party, ask the clubhouse if they ever found a cobra s2 driver head in the pond that 17/18 share. LOL, I put it there. That would be hilarious if they actually did find it. Great course btw, loved it.

Doesn't the temperature have to have a "low" a certain minimum before overseeding can take place? I'm pretty sure overseeding in AZ isn't until sometime in October.

End of September till the end of October is when it usually happens. They also want to make sure that the monsoons have passed us up so that way they don't lose their overseeding,

I for one like the dry, firm and fast conditions.

I've seen some courses here overseed in sept(vistal is closed most of September for punching), my home track is closing for most of October.

I can't stand those dry, choppy lies in the fairway. I tend to be a picker, so it's harder for me to get it headed the right direction. I would rather be in short rough than a dry fairway.

So far haven't encountered any over-seeding here in SoCA. In SoCA and the desert, very few courses close during over-seeding. If they do, it's not for very long. All depends on the courses financial condition, charter and possibly the benevolent dictator / owners wish. Many private / upscale Resort clubs like Pelican and Trump close down, as they should.

I am so glad our club doesn't overseed. It's probably as much because of the cost as anything but I love not having to give up a month during the best weather of the year in October/November and then another month in the spring. Dormant Bermuda grass is an excellent playing surface, although this past winter was so mild there was a hint of green in it off and on all winter.

I don't know what all the complaining is about. Tight dry lies not only improves ball striking, it provides added run-out leaving the ball closer to the hole; presuming ball control is good enough to land the ball in the right spot.

That said, if someone is use to digging holes to china, IMO for a few reasons, their game is at a disadvantage.

I like those guys playing the Open Championship during the dry years (like the year they played at Hoylake). Same Tour players who throw beaver pelts with every swing back home hit down and through their shots, there's a puff of dust and afterward you'll need to get down on your hands and knees to see where their club even hit the ground.

Now that's hardcore golf, it'll separate the ball strikers from the hacks every time.

Yes - it will. Augusta plays tight and fast during The Masters; not so much the rest of the year.

I completely disagree with that.

Nobody likes to play off hard-pan. Anything close to it is a disadvantage as it makes ball-striking difficult.

You're welcome to disagree. NON-over seeded turf is NOT hard pan, its just dried out turf, not lush green turf that tees up the ball and makes it easier. If that makes it difficult for you to hit the ball, that's a game limitation for you. I don't have that limitation, so its not a disadvantage to my ball-striking, and don't worry about it.

A lot depends on whether your swing counts on moving a 3/4" deep chunk of turf out the way to enable proper contact. A lot of hackers are fine as long as they can gouge some dirt aside to get under the ball, much less precision needed that way. Really good ball strikers put the club on the ball precisely, they want as clean and firm a lie as possible let them get all ball every time.

That's why good ball strikers can thrive on tight or bare lies and hackers tend to want a cushion under the ball. Surely we've all seen the guy who will roll his ball from the edge of the fairway into the first cut of rough to get it teed up...
