Pelz' putting bible

Is it worth reading?

i just wanted to hear if any has read Pelz putting bible and what you think of it.
Simply is it worth spending money on and is it worth spending time reading?

I think its worth the money. The book is $30 and I would say you should get enough info from it to be worth it. Think of it as a $30 lesson that you can read and re-read whenever you want.

It's a bit dated now, so I'd try to pick it up on Amazon or somewhere used -- the green reading, break, strategy, preshot routine, etc. are worthwhile, but the Pelz putting technique is not worthwhile to me.

I liked his short game bible and but just wondered if it was worth reading a whole book just about putting... Well, it's winter (and cold and wet) here anyways.

Got mine at Half-Price Books for cheap, but haven't read it yet.

I read most of the book and Pelz's straight back - straight through stroke is not matched well with mine. I have the book but it is one I will not read again. For those with a gate stroke like mine this is not a good read.

I got a copy. I used it as a sleep-aid. Worked great. I'd say, if your bored over the winter and really need a golf-fix, give it a shot. As stated above, the green reading section was probably the most helpful. The best putting book I've read so far, however, has been Bob Rotella's Putting Out of Your Mind. That was helpful for me. Basically completely opposite philosophies. Pelz, obviously, is super analytical and detail oriented. Rotella is all about planning well then letting your mind go blank and letting your body react to the target.

There is some good info in there, but it's such a frustrating read. He pushes his 47 (or whatever) gizmos throughout the whole thing.

 

It's good to skim through. But reading it cover to cover would be like Chinese water torture.

THe putting bible isn't as good as the Short Game Bible IMO.

 

As others mentioned- I think it's valuable, but mostly for the drills, and other techniques to use to stabilize your stroke. There are a lot of great drills at the end of the book that are very valuble and useful.

 

However - I don't subscribe to the straight-straight putting stroke, I use Stan Utley's "gated" stroke instead.

I couldnt agree with you more.......................the pure pendulum stroke thing does not work for me. The analysis of how to read breaks etc. is very eye opening. AFter I read the book and forgot about trying to use pelz's technique and just focused on his ideas about reading the line, speed etc my putting improved.

I think you've hit the nail right on the head here. Pelz is a scientist and as a scientist analyzes everything to an inch of its life. There certainly are mechanics associated with putting but when putting the mind must be clear and relaxed. I certainly endorse Rotella over Pelz here; Pelz gives you too much to think about while you putt.

"Putt like the Pros" is better in my opinion. It gives you more of the information one looks for in a putting book.

 

You should check out all your books from a library rather than buy them.

Too much c--p to wade through to learn a little bit about the art of putting. I don't care about all his statistics and studies, just help me be a better putter. There is some good info in the book if you can find it. Putt like a pro is way more useful and an easier read. Find them in your local library and check it out before buying. He has the knowledge, he just needs to present it in a little more condensed fashion.

Yeah, i agree with what most of the guys are saying, way too technical. It tells you some dumb stuff too, like to poor water in the hole and see which way it flows out to read the break. IMHO i would think that anybody would be better off spending their money on Dr. Bob Rotella's Putting Out of your Mind. He is great for mental stuff too.

I read Pelz's Putting Bible. All 400 pages. You know what I learned? Play More Break. Which is actually very good advice...

If you want to approach your putting the way NASA plans a space mission, read his books.

 

To my knowledge, he's only got one PGA Tour player who's been willing to do this.

I, honestly, think what pelz teaches is a joke. That only goes for putting though. From his version of the stimpmeter to the way he tells you to putt (close back open through). I read the putting bible and tried his stuff for maybe 3 weeks and putting went from bad to worse. I even bought a face balanced putter to see if that would help with his technique. Just hard to get a proper feel.

 

HIs chipping techniques, or what I have been told they are, really help when you are struggling with getting the line right on pitch shots.

 

I have moved to a purely feel basedputting stroke and chipping stroke now, and much more pleased.

Liked it too! Not so much the part about all the different positions for different lengths but more the technical part about pitch and chip shots. I guess that's why I considered buying his putting book too - although I had difficulties imagining it was possible making as good a book about putting. And from what people say it doesn't sound like it's nearly as good.

 

I guess I'll spend my time practicing indoors instead ;)
