I haven't played that many name brand courses, but I was actually just thinking today how ingenious Pasatiempo is. It is such a fun course with so many demanding shots. I also was shocked how much distance they could squeeze out of the yardage. There are about 5 holes out there that are just amazing from a design perspective. Ones that come immediately to mind are 3, 10, 11, 16, and 18, but there are more. I think my favorite was #3, and that may well be my favorite hole I have ever played. The only other two big time courses I have played are Pebble and Whistling Straits. Both are awesome as courses/layouts and of course are visually stunning, but from a sheer design perspective Pasatiempo is better, in my opinion. I would love to play Cypress and Augusta. I feel like they must be better incarnations of Pasatiempo, which is kind of hard to envision.

Whenever you go to that area of the country, Pasatiempo is in my opinion a must-play.

For what it's worth, here is #3. It plays a good 30 yards longer than the card says and if you miss short of the green, the ball will roll back 30+ yards. And from there if you put it past the hole, you are completely dead, which is a tall order considering the whole time you're chipping all you can think of is watching the ball hit short and roll back to your feet.

EDIT: When I played there, my ball hit just short of the green, and rolled all the way back to the bottom of the fairway by the greenside bunker on the right. Again, 30+ yards...

That I've played, 14th at Makena on Maui. 620 from the tips, downhill, double-dogleg. Great views. Also special as it's my wife's favorite hole after the playing the course a couple of times on a recent trip.

Oh yeah, I'd love to rock the 18th on the Plantation and, yes, it's more spectacular. Not prepared to pay the crazy $280 prime time green fees though.

strong holes here...

I Can't pick just one. These aren't neccessarily the best looking holes, but the ones I could play over and over. The 7th at Ballyneal in particular has one of the best greens in the world allowing the hole, approaches and putts to be played dozens of different ways.

Of the courses I've played, here are my favroites

Par 3: True Blue Golf Plantation - 3rd hole. 200 yard shot to a sliver of a green surrounded entirely by water.

sc-tourism-hidden-gems-hole-10-t1.jpg

Par 4: Bethpage Black - 5th hole. When I think of the Black course this is the first hole that pops into my mind. There's just something about the view from the very back tee shot that just does it for me. Classic double-dogleg, probably the most strategic (and hardest) hole on the course. Close Runner Up - 18th hole at Montauk Downs

Par 5: Orchard Creek Golf Club - 1st hole. This is more of a sentimental choice. The tee shot is boring, you can hit it absolutely anywhere. However the view for the second shot is what does it for me. From the 200 yard marker there's about a 25-30 foot elevation change, and I love the view. Plus, it signals the beginning of the round, and a chance to get off to a running start.

Yes. You think you are at the Gates of Heaven when you reach the 4th tee. This photo doesn't do justice to the scale of the view
