Try the power and light area, it is in downtown. Have fun and If you want some great Mexican food try Mannys.

Our group is going be in Kansas City for a few days this spring, and know nothing about the area. I have researched all the courses to play, but where to stay? Which surrounding areas are nice, etc? Which have fun nightlife for guys under 40?

Power & Light is okay if you're in your younger 20s, but personally, I would recommend the Country Club Plaza area. Several hotels, best dining in the area, shopping and a more reserved and adult nightlife that still lets loose. The Sheraton on 47th street is walking distance to all the good bars/restaurants, and the accomodations are as to be expected of a normal Sheraton. The Hampton Inn directly across the street is a great lower price option.

For golf, these would be my recommendations: 1) Creekmoor in Raymore, Mo; 2) Stone Canyon in Blue Springs/Independence, Mo; 3) Shoal Creek in Parkville/North Kansas City; 4) Sycamore Ridge in Spring Hill, KS; 5) Golf Club of Kansas in Lenexa?. Others to consider would be Prairie Highlands, Ironhorse, Deer Creek, and Falcon Ridge.

Enjoy!

Everyone above is dead on. If any in your group are Cigar smokers, be sure to check out the Outlaw. Great selection and awesome lounge. You also need to try and eat at Oklahome Joes, best BBQ in town/the world.

I will take the OK Joe's recommendation one step further and recommend the Z-Man sandwich. My favorite sandwich of all time.

What is the demographic of your group?

The Country Club Plaza is a good place to stay. You have some great food right there and a few good bars. Then, Power and Light and Westport areas are a really short cab ride away.

Stone Canyon
Sycamore Ridge
Golf Club of KS

I haven't played Creekmoor but have heard great things.

on the plaza check the Raphael hotel, the rates are fairly reasonable from what i hear. only problem with staying on the plaza is it's a PITA to get anywhere from there. if you stay on the plaza you do have good options within walking distance which is nice....gram & dun is great, capital grille is always solid, jack stack BBQ is loved by many of my out-of-town business partners, and Fred-P-Otts has been there since before the plaza went upscale and is a great place to get a burger and pitcher of beer. bar options aren't quite as good imo, but O'Dowd's gets a good crowd and has a nice rooftop deck with heaters. tomfooleries used to be good but i haven't been there for years. granfalloon is a decent option as well.

the aladdin hotel downtown by power & light is also reasonably priced and walkable to bars and such. depending on the demographic of your group places like the cigar bar can be fun, the phoenix is a cool place (kindof a low key jazz club that has live music every night), or you can get rowdy with the people in their late 20s at angel's rock bar etc.

for my course recommendations;
i'm not a fan of creekmoore (it's WAY the F out there)
Golf Club of Kansas i think is the best public course in KC, but you'll want some feedback on current conditions as it was a ROUGH summer the last two years and they had some fairway issues last i heard.
sycamore is good but it's a love/hate thing with me. i just don't like the back 9 that much...there are some really awkward tee shots for me distance wise. it is a very good course though.
i'd check out stone canyon - Norman design that was supposed to be private only but they didn't get much membership so is now public. heard great things from locals i trust
falcon ridge is good for a reasonable deal.

PS - Arthur Bryant's is better than Oklahoma Joe's.

Stay on the Plaza. Eat @ Oklahoma Joes (Get there early, long lines, expect to wait 30+ minutes) - If do not want the wait of Oklahoma Joes, Arthur Bryants is great too.

For public golf in the area, my favorites: The National #2 (The Deuce) and Tiffany Greens.

My favorite restaurants on the Plaza: JJ's (chops, wine, cocktails), Fogo de Chao (Brazillian chops house), Houstons (Chain, but always good)

My favorite restaurants north of the Plaza and into Downtown + River Market: Pizza Bella (wood-oven pizza, cheap gourmet), Bristol (local McCormick and Schmicks, great happy hour), Le Fou Frog (French bistro, great atmosphere and food), The Farm House (Local farm to table, incredible breakfast)

Nightlife - Martini Corner if its nice out, several bars, great patios, near plaza. On plaza, O'douds.

Is The Deuce really a public course? I had always assumed it was private and never played there, but I've wanted to. What are the rates?

Some may disagree, but I really enjoyed Swope Memorial golf course. It is a short city owned track but what a blast we had playing it! 4 of us went Down for a twins/royals series three years ago & we still talk about Swope being a fun & distinctly different park course layout. It was cheap too, so I recommend playing there. Our handicaps ranged from 0 to 26 for this on the trip.

Power & lights district, regardless of age is a must go. I had never experienced anything like it in regards the the concept of bars, restaurants & entertainment where you could bring your beer from one place to another.

We all really enjoyed our trip; have a good time!

Swope is an interesting mention. It isn't as NICE, but has a lot of history and character. It is a Tillinghast design.

If you have never been to anything like Power & Light, I guess it would be a must-go. It really is a cool thing for people who aren't used to it. For us that grew up close to it, it is a nuisance.

Swope is an old Tillinghast track that has been getting some pretty good word of mouth around here since they redid some of it a few years ago. my inlaws have played it and said it's good, but i've never been on it....would like to though.

the duece is the "low rent" side of the national as far as i know. been on it once and liked it. the national is my favorite private course i've played in KC.

Swope is a fun track, but be prepared for a 5+ hour round, at least. Same with Stone Canyon. At one point Stone Canyon was doing 8 minute tee intervals and letting singles/doubles go off between 4somes. The quality of golfer at Stone Canyon is much less than some of the other high-end public tracks, IMO. Creekmoor is definitely far away, but worth the trip. Very playable, good selection of tees, you hit every club in your bag, and always in good shape.

Gram & Dun is a must-try on the Plaza, and Starker's is great for higher-end, more formal affairs.

If you want a real meat fest, Em Chamas is an all you can eat Brazillian steakhouse that is half the price of Fogo de Chao. It is located near The National Golf Club on NW 64th. Great value, but you had better come hungry.

+1 on Em Chamas. I recently ate there for the first time and loved it. I was even able to gross my wife out by eating a chicken heart! Not only is it much cheaper than fogo, they seem to run Groupons often so you can get it even cheaper!

I just found that place on my last trip to KC. I visit monthly, and plan to make Em Chama's a regular stop, along with Oklahoma Joes. KC is a meat eaters paradise!

National #2 is semi-private - I honestly do not know the rate (I believe less than $100) nor the play restrictions for non-members. I am close friends with the owners of the course so I have pretty good access.

National #1 is a really good course that I have had the privilege of playing many many times. I think the course has 17 good holes, and the only blemish is the uphill extremely short par 3. Other than that, its a great track with one of my favorite finishing holes around.
