Get your arm swing and pivot in sync

DP,

Honestly, I don't know.
I don't know the proper path of development to a proper full swing.
I am certain that there are many paths, and many false paths with few true paths.
Should we start small and keep adding or should we start whole and keep refining?

Since you already have a swing that you are doing well, I guess, you should build forward upon that.
But if I were you, I would refine it first by adopting the 9/3 drill as it is credible, well exposed and discussed here.

Will depend on player but I'd guess 20ish, hands in front of right peck just right of sternum would be good reference point.

Coming back to this thread, an old one, but very good one.

Iteach,

How would this play into a full swing? Still the same of will the hands be working more over the right shoulder?

Trying to get a good reference point to work from.

Am I to assume that the upper arms aren't tightly packed into the body while doing this drill to allow the arms to move faster in front of the body?

I apologize if this was answered but Iteachgolf could you give your thoughts on how you produce more/faster arm speed in this drill. My issue it's seems as if my arms must be made of cement because I just can't get them moving fast..lol. Thanks

I have read this thread with lots of interest and would agree that it is very helpful. Iteach is showing admirable hand position at impact and during his swing. To fully understand what is meant by 'in synch' I have loaded some picture to track the correlation of hands to sternum in his swing. Is this an appropriate approach to track what 'in synch' means? If yes is this execution how it shall look like? Imo yes, but just want to make sure.

There is a yellow spot close to his sternum pointing roughly to the camera, the hands are close to his right shoulder.

In this picture I have marked the point direction of the sternum. Please note where the hands are in relationship.

oqdd8kqw.jpg

Same here. Hands seem to be in front of the right shoulder, similar to the top position.

pw9cmoz5.jpg

Here the hands have caught up with the sternum.

For me this sequence is as good as it can be. The only question I have is about understanding, if that is 'in synch'.

A hand position at the top in front of right shoulder, catching up with sternum at impact.

The hinging and Rehinging will speed up arms. Feel like you load the club, unload, then reload

I've been going through this thread and the drill from Dan in the past few days and had a few questions.

1) does anyone else feel like they can produce a lot of power with this drill, even with such a short swing? Because it feels very powerful to me and I really like the way it gets my whole body moving through impact. The feel is almost like a float load but with the lower body leading or something. It's strange but I really like it. It's like I can turn my shoulders as fast as I want and I'm right where I should be at impact.

2) How would one incorporate this move into a full swing? I know the drill is not meant to be a full swing that you would hit shots with, but again, that very powerful feeling is one that I want in my swing coming into impact and just after impact. Going up to the top of my swing I feel like I lose something in transition that puts me in a different feel coming into impact with my full swing vs the drill swing. Anyone have any thoughts on how to mesh the drill into a full swing a bit?

Drew, I'm right there with you. I hit some really great shots kind of blending this and the 9-3 drill but feel like I'm missing something when trying to make a full turn then transitioning.

Dan, is it something we just need to drill for a while before we take it to the top? What do you have to do to "get back" to the "9 o'clock" position on the way back down if we choose to use this drill to start our full swing?

It's a tiny bit more turn and s tiny bit more wrist. I suggest filming yourself. Most who feel chest high are actually taking virtually a full swing when hitting a ball. In practice swings you are negating momentum. When swinging with momentum at full speed the swing will get longer. I'd focus on setting wrist fully and I'm guessing swing is long enough. It's basically same length feel wise without being as "stiff"

Dan am I right in saying the straight arms move back first and thus the shoulders and then the hips eventually? My shoulders and hips turn together straight away and get my arms behind me so think this drill will do wonders for me.

I think the real benefit is that if your arms are straight you literally can't get stuck, because the arms are fixed on one end with the club, and on the other to your shoulders. So there is no way for them not to be in front of your chest.

If the arms remain straight, shoulders move when arms move, since the arms are not "swinging".

Therefore they should move first and then the hips turn later in reaction to the arms and shoulders moving? Not all at the same time like I do currently?

They move close to the same time. Arms then shoulders then hips but the gapping is very small

Dan

If one still overdraw or hook with this drill does it mean the arms or hands are still too slow or lagging on the downswing?
[/quote]

Very possibly. The hinging on both sides is very important. Gets arms moving quickly and getting body to respond

I find that the best way to get straight arm is the pushing of the right heel pad on the left thumb and I think many has commented on this being the extensor action.

Does this pushing against the left thumb continue to the downswing? Would this be a valid downswing feel for the things you want to achieve in speeding up the arms?

In short push the right hand against left thumb back and forth.

How do the arms catch up to the sternum? My arms are in-line with my right shoulder then my shoulder stalls in order to get the arms to catch up. What should the correct feeling be?
