Need Suggestions for a Friend with 84 mph Drive Speed...also need ideal TM numbers too!

Recommended Posts

I am working with a friend that has a 84 mph SS with a Driver. We learned this at a recent TM session.

I took to the TM to check out new ion shafts and have a look at a different Driver shaft.

Currently he is playing in his irons DGR300....I suggested something in the 90 gram weight steel to increase LA, and spin and reduce overall weight. He tested a few and the Nippon 950 GH in reg seems to be pretty good for him.

His current driver is a PING G15 9.5 with Avix Red 69 Reg flex....ball flight is to low and carry is weak. TM confirmed what I thought.

Looking for suggestions on iron shafts and a driver shaft for him. He needs o try a 10.5 or 11.5 head no doubt, but I am not sure if he needs something a step below a Reg Flex or a certain type.

What are ideal numbers for an 84 SS....spin, LA, Distance Carry, and AOD?

I have an assortment of TM data but nothing for 84 MPH SS...thanks for the help.

Absolutely needs a higher loft. With his SS he would need a world record positive angle of attack to have any hope of keeping the ball in the air with a 9.5.

I'd look for a 11.5 minimum. r flex is probably ok. He can go lighter in shaft weight as long as he doesn't have a handsy release

Does he have to use a conforming driver? If not I would look at a 959OL from Wishon. Hi COR face that he may pick up a little extra distance with. Have the head hand picked for more loft.

I would say yes to that.

AOA was -.9....LA on TM was like 8 to 12

He would need at least 105 mph SS to go along with that AoA and LA to be an ideal set up.

my point was with his SS he is well past the point of diminished returns. He doesnt have the ability to impart the amount of needed spin or ball speed to come anywhere close to optimal launch characteristics of a 9.5 driver. Its why a lot of players with slower SS hit their 3-5 irons the same distance.

Think of it as a kid throwing a baseball, they cant throw it as hard so they have to throw it a little higher to get it where the want it to go. The harder you throw the lower you can throw a ball and still make it where you want.

Look for a higher lofter, shallow face driver

I have a driver swing speed of 86 when cold and 90 ish when warned up. I usually avg about 215 and 230 when I catch one. I play an AXE6 shaft in R flex in an r11s 12* (could be increased to 13.5* max) and fits me awesome. I'd suggest the same shaft in Sr flex. Quality shaft for $50 or less.

A couple of points: optimum numbers will be around 15 degree launch, 2500 rpm which should still give an angle of decent < 40 degrees for some run out with a near perfect smash you are looking at 197 yards carry. Launch can be tweaked based of normal playing conditions for example often windy then the launch should be lower.

I totally agree that launch needs to be increased from 8-12 but this does not automatically mean a 12 degree head because each diver model has it's own launch characteristics.

If the player is a smoother tempo swinger you might have a look out for an Adams Speedline tech, it comes with a mid 50 gram matrix Rul and even the 10.5 is very easy launching. I personally have had good success with the UST proforce V2 55 regular which provides me with very good smash and low spin numbers for my 81 mph swing.

Regarding irons shafts, certainly dropping a little weight might be a good thing, but again it is not guaranteed that ultra-light steel is the perfect match. Tempo and release point dictate the shaft model more than swing speed.
