Funniest thing I've ever heard regarding carts on the course

A buddy of mine just played one of the poorer courses in my area. Kind of a shame, because the layout has potential, but has always lacked the $$ required. Anyways, he's there on a Groupon deal and asks if there are any rules regarding carts, specifically, is there a 90 degree rule. The guy in the club house says, if you can find the fairway, you can drive on it.

 

Apparently, their mower was in repair. My friend told me that they lost and found, many balls in the middle of the fairway.

 

It's a course that I generally play once a year, if nothing more than for nostalgia, because once I've been on it, I swear NEVER to return.

I didn't really mean to use this as a slam against the course, as anyone around here knows it for what it is. But for a course to say "if you can find the fairway . . "

I think he said the Groupon was $20 with cart

Banner Country Club.

Newport Country Club has a 'No carts in the ROUGH' rule. Keep them in the fairway. Don't want to make the club-grabbing rough easier.

Wintonbury has a similar rule.

But make no mistake, this course is not in the same league as NCC or Wintonbury Hills. The whole course was "rough"

Ah yes, Banner Lodge. I have so many tales to share about that golf course that could easily be confused with a town dump. I'll spare you all for now. I googled Banner last year after I saw they had a booth at the Travelers for their housing and found this gem. Just played there about a week ago with my wife's uncle who is in the area. The last time I played there was in a high school match over 10 years ago. They certainly let that place go. It's too bad, there are some interesting holes. The oddest thing is the development and the what appears to be a huge seemingly nice event hall. I just can't imagine spending money to be on a golf property and choose banner.

I lived in East Hampton for about 10 years and played there frequently. Two fun stories - one Saturday afternoon I went out as a single and was paired with CT Senator Chris Dodd and his brother. He wasn't much of a golfer, and seemed to be on the Bill Clinton Mulligan program. I'm sure he's played nicer places.

Banner is also open all winter, snow permitting. They had a cylindrical tube/funnel you put your ball in to determine your place in line. I was there one day and a fight broke out over one guy trying to get 8 people out on his ball in tube. Anything goes at Banner, especially in the winter. Nice to bounce one off the frozen pond on one.

There's a 9 hole course in Jackson MS that's kind of along those lines of "if you can find the fairway" and also "if you can find the green". I've played it a few times where the grass on the green came almost half way up the side of the ball. It cost almost nothing to walk and it's always empty so good for just going out to hit the ball a bit. Trying to remember the name..... it's right off lakeland near the freeway.
