2013 Majors

I hope there isn't another thread on this ...

Just wanted to comment that the 3 majors to date this year have all been very exciting with lots of players in the mix. Great and deserving Champions as well. Compelling storylines and a golf writers dream in my opinion.

The shot making under pressure has also been superb.

I hope the PGA next month is also a barn burner and rounds out the 2013 Majors in fine fashion

Can anyone else think of a year to rival this year ? Let's think modern majors and not the Bobby Jones slam

It has been a jolly good year so far.

I think a "decent year" is entirely subjective. Fans of Scott, Rose & Sir Phil may think so. Fans of Westwood, Woods etc.... not so much.

Amazing stats coming out of the event ystdy on the Golf Channel

Was interesting to see that since Phil won his first major in 2004 he and Tiger have 5 vs 6 over the same time period

This years majors have been awesome, but maybe its just me, but I enjoyed last years just as much. Bubba Watson winning the masters in probably the craziest hook shot Ive ever seen, especially given the circumstances. The US Open showing its teeth after getting embarrassed the previous year by Rory, and Tiger letting everyone think he was back until the weekend. The Open with the big easy coming from behind to steal it from Adam Scott, who everyone thought had the championship locked up, and then missing that heart breaking putt at the end. And of course the PGA with Rory toppling the field, getting that number one rank back, after such a poor year up until that.

Ill definitely say though if I had to pick only one I would pick this year, which has had some great moments. I was commenting to someone earlier about how many storylines the open had going into Sunday, it was crazy. You had Tiger who everyone thought would make a comeback, Lee with a two shot lead, could he finally do it, Phil who ripped on the course earlier in the week and said he never thought he would win the championship, Adam Scott in position to get revenge from last year, and others as well.

If it weren't for the dud at US Open last year would've been awesome.

What made these great is not just their eventual winners, but how they won.

This years Majors were all WON.

Masters: Scott birdied 3 down the stretch, including 18 to tie Angel right after Angle had birdied 18. Then they went on to a great playoff, where both nearly made it on 18, and both nearly made it on 10... with Adam's dropping.

US Open: Despite Rose making a couple late bogies, it doesn't mean he lost it. You could shoot 75 and still 'WIN' it, if the course average was 80. Rose was composed coming down 17/18, made buttery swings, and killed 18 with a great hogan-esque approach, and nearly holed a fairway-wood from the fringe.

Open: Phil OWNED Sunday at the open. I had never been a Phil fan up til yesterday. Every sports fan picks their own 'reasoning' for liking someone. How nice they are, how classy, how they look, how they perform, etc etc. Athletes are not my roles models, I only like athletes for how mentally tough they are. Tiger, Kobe, Jordan, Manning, etc. LeBron is more talented than MJ or Kobe ever were, but to me, I still like them more because they were greater on a mental level than Lebron has been throughout his career. It's the same reason why I've always liked Tiger over Phil. Phil has always been mentally weak, but Sunday he played, as he said, the round of his life. He shot an 'impossible' score according to most pro's, hung tough with testy par putt after testy par putt, birdied a few late, and then on 18... we saw a new Mickelson. In the past 10 years, this is the type of time when Mickelson would 3 putt like the Scottish Open and let everyone back in the door. Not only did he not 3 putt or 2 putt, but he absolutely ripped fingers off of anyone else who's fingers were still slightly grasping it. He was mentally tough that day. Took him til his 40's, but he's evolved. Great win.

---------------------

Last year on the other hand, half were WON, half were LOST. Bubba and Rory went out and WON their.

US Open: Webb shot a great score in a later group, but more or less stumbled into it completely void of pressure. He said he never looked at the scoreboards (that riled up ol Johnny Miller quite a bit) so he never felt the pressure. Rather than confront the pressure, then play mentally tough and answer the call, he shied away from the pressure by pretending he basically wasn't in it. He posted an early score, and everyone else in the lead groups who had the pressure couldn't answer. Zzzzzzz.

Open. Adam Scott's Sunday final 4 holes was the definition of losing a major, choking it away to Ernie Els who came from ~5-6 back.

1986. Greg Norman led all 4 majors after 3 rounds.

Masters: Jack Nicklaus famous back 9 charge, shooting 65 to edge Norman, Tom Kite, Seve Ballesteros, Tom Watson, Nick Price.
U.S Open: Returns to Shinnecock for the 1st time in 80+ yrs. Raymond Floyd outduels Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins, Payne Stewart. Norman collapses in front 9, nonfactor.
British Open: Turnberry - Norman prevails, wins 1st major. Beats yound European talent, Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Seve.
PGA: Inverness - Norman leads Bob Tway by 4 with 9 to play. Tied going into the final hole, Tway stuns Norman holing out his bunker shot.

I would say 2000 is one of the best years in many years. If not for his first round 75 or something like that in the Masters we could have possibly seen a Grand Slam by Tiger. His play in the final 3 majors was as dominant of golf as we will ever see again. Everyone else was litteraly playing for 2nd place.

Each one of those majors brought it's own excitement to see how well he was going to play and if anyone else had a chance. I remember how well Ernie Els played that year and he was just devistated that he never really was in it.

1975 Nicklaus at the Masters .. beats Johnny Miller and Tom Weiskopf
1975 US Open Lou Graham in a playoff over Mahaffey
1975 British Open .. Tom Watson beats Miller and Nicklaus by one
1975 PGA - Nicklaus beats Crampton and Weiskopf at Firestone

Take away Lou Graham and that was a year of solid major battles as well
