BACK IN BLACK!!

Here it is freed from the jaws of life for a few more pics.
The basic shape is begining to become visible, though there are many many refinements to come.






Today, Byron cut the face. The top line measures 0.300 thousandths of an inch and the pocket was cut to (.250), leaving a face thickness of approximately .050 thousandths in the center of the face. We are discussing finish and stampings today.



Here are the last pictures for tonight. These views give the best perspective yet of what lies ahead, although about half the total weight of the putter remains to be removed from the billet.







The top line was shaped (the shape of the face profile pays homage to David Mills' SoftTail) and Byron marked the line where the sight-line will be added.



The rear has been shaped and a handstamped sight-line added. The sightline is a special touch.
Vertically oriented hand-stamping that says "BYRONMORGANMADE". It takes a tremendous skill to hand-stamp in a straight line. Byron is a master. This is going to look FANTASTIC in gold paintfill over gun blue.

The bottom of the billet is still flat - there is a lot of shaping yet to come.

The hosel was welded on today.





The hosel has been bent, and a lot of shaping done. The weight is 371 grams... the final gram will be removed during the final polishing. The toe hang is 3:30.

It is a new original putter design I created. I worked with Sam Rhee who prepared some illustrations that I sent to Byron Morgan. Byron and I have been discussing the design.. and Byron of course had a bunch of tweaks to the concept and he is now making it, by hand in his shop.

 

It is a mid-mallet. More later.

It has to be more than incredibly exciting to see that your idea is coming to fruition! I saw this thread title and knew what was in store, OH YEAH!

Can't wait to see the pics as it goes thru each stage. Byron has got to be loving this, as well. He is such a super guy to work with.

Keep us posted and we'll get to share a piece of that dream.

Thanks for all the kind words.

 

Byron is very generous of his time and talent and I think he is genuinely excited to be working on this. He's been cranking the finishing of lots of putters (mostly headed to Japan and South Korea), and he's working on mine when he needs a creative outlet.

 

It is very exciting to see an idea through from a vague notion to reality. Sam was great to work with on the initial drawings and helped me communicate what I was after.

 

I can't wait to see how it comes out...

Drew, what a feeling to watch your own putter/design being made! Not many people in the world can create a flatstick that personal. vrey exciting to watch this thread take shape.

This whole process is really fantastic. I am following it just like you guys are, except I know a bit more about how this script goes.

 

In an email from Byron today, I got: "This putter is a good idea." Well, that really made my day.

 

I know Byron is having fun with it and, as Jim says, he enjoys being able to bring you into the shop with the pictures.

 

It is so fun seeing more and more of it come to life as the steel shavings are peeled off. Working with Sam Rhee to do the illustrations was a key part of the process. Having good drawings I was able to communicate so much easier with Byron about the design elements which are simple, yet deceptively hard to convey in words.

Having done Research and Design and been the head of engineering for a company I REALLY enjoy the design process. I really miss actually making things. My new job, however, is taking all my time up. I put 76 hours of overtime in last month ;)

Since it is so deep from front to back, I would have to guess a mallet type - similar shape to PING Darby - shapewise, not contour wise. Very cool.

So here is my guess - the one on the left. The one on the right is a more traditional Anser copy, which I would assume is not the case here since that has been done 14 thousand times by Scotty Xerox alone in a normal year ;)

OK, took a little more time to come up with my guess with a better image. OK, so how close is this ;)

 

One last bit, the two squarish sections at the toe and heel (towards the back), have to be milled down to loose more weight. So take this one and round down the edges of those sections, and that is my guess. Looks pretty cool.

Not bad, LOL. But not too close. It is actually very helpful for me to see that sight line and dot, but I think that would weigh >500g.

 

I like the line, but I am going to go dotless.

 

It is going to be a Mid-mallet.

The basic concept I started with was to take the weight that is normally in the shoulders and move it rearward to the corners to increase MOI.

 

It won't look much like the Piper at all.
