"Department store junk...???"

...as Ben would say...or something of value???

MacGregor Ben Hogan Model - P.T. Stylized (Shamrock) Rec. No. 2360

Long hosel, long ferrule, coated shaft and original leather grip.

Anyone have an idea of when MacGregor made this club?

I've looked through both Jim Kaplan's "MacGregor Golf History - Catalogs" and The Golfworks' "The Golf Club Identification Price Guide III '50 to '93" without any luck. I think it falls into the 1943 - 1948 period.

I picked it up for $.49 at a local Goodwill recently, did I overpay?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Absolutely at 0.49 you did not pay too much. I looks a lot like my pre WW2 Tommy Armours. I would say probably adding to the confusion that it may be pre 1942 or post 1947 because as far as I have read there were no new golf clubs made between 1942 and 1947 due to the war effort. But whatever year it is it is a good looking club and a good find at a bargain price.

I often check the barrels at the veterans stores etc. I have not seen many of what I would call vintage, but often do see some older persimmon blocks. I picked up two Olimar Mirage Tri-metals recently and love them! a 21* and a 15*. I think I paid about $3.00 each. I should have picked up the Titleist 976R I saw one day, but when I went back, it was gone. Also got an old Tom Weiskopf putter. I am now looking for an old Sunday Bag in good shape.

Macgregor Stylized irons are women's clubs, best estimate is 1940, the first year Macgregor made Hogan clubs
Any of the PT Hogans Stylized I have ,are shorter and much lighter than Hogan Macgregor Mens clubs

And here I thought I found the "Holy Grail" of golf clubs (haha)...oh well! Thanks for the bad news! (just kidding). On second thought, are there any female lurkers that could swat this stick, straight and long? I guess my $.49 investment may be for naught...now, if I can only find the 3-11 iron that matches, I could have something of value.

Strangely, it doesn't say "Lady MacGregor" on it...

Not lurking anymore & don't know from long ;) but if you can get me the specs on it, I can probably scare up something similar and try it on the range, think my hickories might be close. Edge you can shave with, right?

Or you can bring it to Big Stu's get-together and I'll try to hit it in front of you, God and everybody!

I'll get some specs on it and reply back. Yes, it definitely has a very sharp leading edge on it...I really like the clean, simple look of it. Even though it's a woman's club, I really want to give it a whack or two and see how it performs once all this snow melts!!! Has Big Stu's get-together been decided upon as to the when and where?

You probably can't buy a ladies' set with anything above a five iron now.
[/quote]I don't think you can buy many sets now with anything above a 5 iron unless it is something like the Apex Pros or TMAG TP. Most of the GI/CB sets I have seen only go to the 5 iron

I picked up the 1968 Hogan irons with the Rocket shafts. I had to see how they play...!

Hey BR, I also picked up a set of he Plus 1s with the aluminum shafts recently and have enjoyed them so far, though their lighter weight has had me struggling a bit as I'm pulling them too far inside on my swing.

Here's my bag pic from Monday's round:

Thanks Randy, though I could certainly replace the sock monkey headcover with something R/W/B at some point. I thought I had a 1 hood with this bag, but it is nowhere to be found.

Some would argue the sock money cover is pathetically appropriate.
