Most Unique Location Played?

Recommended Posts

Fellow Golfers,

What is the most unique location, country, golf course you've ever played? I'm currently in Saudi Arabia for work and have been fortunate enough to play a few of the courses here and got me thinking about the other random places throughout the world that are pretty unique. My favorite here is Dirab Golf Club (pictured). Just seeing what other random locations everyone has been able to swing em!

For me it was la touessrok in Mauritius which I played with the wife 2 years ago.

http://www.letouessrokresort.com/IMG/jpg/golf_ileauxcerfs.jpg

It's on a small island off Mauritius (5 mins in an included water taxi) and the island which is owned by a hotel consists of the golf course / beach club and is a protected nature reserve.

It's a Bernhard Langer course and is by a country mile the hardest course I've ever played. It's exceptionally narrow (and I mean really narrow), long and has a lot of blind dog logs. It's also very windy as a small island with no protection as most holes run close to the beach.

Par is 72 and the course record set by Tom Lewis is 72 so nobody has ever gone under par here including your pros!

It was pricey to play at £280 (around $400) for both of us but we were treated like royalty as well. As soon as we got off the boat there were guys from the golf club waiting in a buggy to take us up to the club. Once we had settled up on the green fee we were told our cart was outside waiting. The cart was all ready and stocked up with two ice buckets with numerous bottles of water, pencils etc etc.

We were then pointed in the direction of the range and told we could have a practice for as long as we wanted and to go off whenever we wanted.

When we got to the first tee the starter told us not to play too fast as he said there was someone in front. He said he thought there was someone on around the 6th hole who was the only person out and he wasn't joking either as we didn't see a soul all afternoon.

Upon return full club clean, fresh towels for a shower and freshen up and then buggied back to the boat. Proper day of millionaires golf.

Played the Kili Golf Club in Arusha, Tanzania last year. Went over for two weeks and on the last day we tried to get 9 holes in before our flight. The course was just being built at the time so they only had 9 holes open. Its really in a completely backwoods area - you take an awful dirt road off the awful main road and then there is a "trail" you drive on after that - but boom, you pop out and there is a golf course being built. Believe designed and built by a former Euro Tour/Kenya Open winner, but thats my bad memory kicking in.

When we showed up, I mean literally there was no clubhouse, no infrastructure for visitors and you are quite literally in the middle of the bush. Honestly a bit terrifying at first. But a guy shows up out of nowhere, says he had gotten word from the GM that we were coming and he had put together rental clubs for us. While it was honestly a bag of 10+ year old stuff, it was the most incredible gesture I could think of, the guy was so, so proud of it and we were blown away. They were training a couple of kids in the local caddy program and one of them spoke great English - certainly better than my Swahili. The caddy fee translated to 80 cents US.

Just a really amazing experience. The whole trip in general made me thankful for a lot of things in my life but being able to throw golf in on top of it was just icing on the cake.

Views of Mount Kilimanjaro were incredible and overall just an amazing experience.

When I was in college, I went with my parents to visit my brother who was in the Army in Germany, it was the summer of 1980. On my Mom's side of the family, we have relatives who came from Austria, who we went and visited and also drove though Switzerland. I actually played golf on that trip, and sadly I can't remember if it was in Austria or Switzerland where I played, just that it was very mountainous . I don't think either country had many courses that were open to the public back then. I rented a set of clubs, they must have been from the 1950s, but luckily I got paired up with a guy from England who had his own clubs, which he let me hit instead of the antiques I rented. I do remember playing with the small ball also. I remember that it wasn't cheap, but the course was pretty rugged, I won't say cow pasture, but it was not up to even an average public course in the US at the time. I do remember having fun, and the scenery of the mountains was really neat.

about 12 years or so ago, I was on holiday in Rio and played a course not far from the beaches, but it still had a mountain feel on some of the holes (I want to say it was called Gavea? but i'm not sure)...at the time, someone told me there were only a couple of courses in ALL of Rio, which seemed completely baffling! I remember I got 20-year-old club rentals from an old shack, and a local kid sold me a few golf balls that we exchanged through a fence!

I also played a course in Singapore maybe 15 years ago where they handed you a garage door opener when you paid for the round; what was it for? to power a monorail that ran the length of the course and which carried your clubs!
