Very interested as well, glad you've brought this up. I was just going to use an old club with a load of lead powder/tape on the end

I see on eBay you can buy solid stainless or mild steel in round bars but not sure the weight it would be or how easy it would be to cut and drill! Might be more aggravation than it's worth ha

Yeah I think the amount of messing about you'd have to do to get it right would be pointless, just buy the real one

I'm toying with this idea myself. From what I have read here is what you need:

  • 3x driver shafts with grips on
  • Weights to attach to the heads weighing approimately 7% lighter, even, and 7% heavier than a driver head. This works out roughly to 180-185 grams, 200 grams and 215 grams.
  • A way to secure the weights to the heads. The most common way seems to be a stack of washers, or a few heavy bolts secured with a (probably very) long strip of strong tape.

Gonna give it a crack when I get my chores around the house done!

Super speed use 20% lighter 10% lighter and 5% heavier. Has to be between 10-20% for optimal overspeed training on what research I've read!

Home Depot- 1/4"x6" steel pipe nipple threaded on both ends.

1/4" npt female pipe tee.

You will need to cut the pipe different lengths to achieve the correct weight for each club. Or buy different lengths of the pipe.

Also I had to strip the end of the graphite shaft so it would fit inside the pipe.

Then I used shafting epoxy to secure the pipe on the shaft.

Are those numbers you posted how much the tips weigh? Or the overall weight of the whole stick?

Of it's the tip weights thanks and if it not then can you tell me what the tips weigh?

Edit - Let me check, had a post but thought "measure twice...."

Edit2 - Yep overall weight.

I live in Australia and there was no way I was paying almost $500 AUD to get a Set.

I just purchased a number of 10 mm gal nuts and held it all together with a split pin and epoxy (along with a Ferrule)

The heavy club....just an old driver with Electrical tape wrapped around the head until I reached the desired weight.

I used a split pin as a safety precaution, similar to how heads where pinned onto shafts many years ago.

I have bent the ends of the split pins over since I took the photos, plus cleaned the nuts up to look new.

All shafts are Stiff.

My game Driver is 318 grams

Light Club 248.....78%

Medium Club 280.....88%

Heavy Club 336......106%

Total Cost

  • Shafts and grips....Zero (all ready had them laying around)
  • Epoxy.....$5
  • Galvanised Nuts........$4
  • Ferrules......50c
  • Electrical Tape.......$2

I've purchased the Radar and it will arrive Friday.

Love this. I would have added epoxy in between the nuts and shaft and on the tip. epoxy is another $5 and will make it really secure.

FWIW, I purchased the SuperSpeed golf system (the senior system since I am mid sixties and getting back into golf after a back injury had kept me away for over 5 years). I wanted to add the men's heavy club (the red one) as the system has already added 7mph to my "recovering" ss which went from 96 mph before my injury down to 82 mph after my injury. My progressing ss after only one week is now at around 89 mph so I wanted to get the red club, which is not included in the senior set as the overall weight of my driver is 315g and SSG states that the heaviest club in the senior set is the Blue medium club at a stated 290g overall. Not wanting to buy a whole new set, I also decided to make my own Red club. In order to do thIs, out of curiosity I decided to see how accurate the weights were on the SSG clubs vs what they list (weights they list are supposed to be TOTAL club weights).

Again, FWIW, the weights they state are not very accurate. The stated weights are Yellow (super light) 225g vs. actual measured 230.80g); Green (light) 255g vs actual 262.94g; Blue (medium) 290g vs. 297.20g actual. Based on this, the stated weight of the Red club (heavy) of 335g is probably closer to 341-343g.

As everyone's driver weight varies, in order to optimize the effectiveness of the system using SSG's own research using their percentages weight differences, it is probably better to calculate the % differences from your own driver when making your own set. As it is, the weight of the SSG clubs are about 5-7g heavier than their stated weights, which percentage wise can result in a trainer that is "out of spec" for the optimal weight especially for those that use especially light weight or especially heavy driver weights. BTW, I ended up just adding weights to a old R9 SuperTri (using the weight ports) to create a swing trainer that was precisely 5% heavier than my current gamer. Hopefully, I will continue to see gradual gains over the nex year. Hope this helps anyone pondering making their own set.

Here's another take - I had some 3/4" brass rod and plenty of spare grips laying around, and the Matrix fairway shafts were on sale for $8 each, so I couldn't resist. I have a 10" mini lathe at home, so I drilled an appropriate sized hole the the brass rod, estimated weight once drilled based on the first small test piece I made, then cut the brass pieces a touch proud, drilled them out, and faced things off to get the approximate weight. The brass is epoxied on and should be super sturdy since there is probably 3-6x the contact area of a clubhead/hosel at about the same weight.

The fairway shafts are a little shorter than driver length (43"), so I decided to up the weight a touch to make them feel like a similar swing weight. Ended up with light = 272 grams, medium = 300 grams, and heavy = 346 grams.

Thanks for the inspiration everybody, these work great as I've picked up 6-7 mph in about 6 weeks.

I think I know what I'm doing this weekend.... I'm sure I can find a few junk shafts and a box of nuts/washers to play with.
