Any average Joes play a 70gr+ driver shaft?

Recommended Posts

My trusty old BB has a 50gr Fubuki stiff shaft

I hit it ok, when I do my part and not jerk it over the top that is.

I can get pretty handsy even when on plane, and the big miss is left

I tend to lay off of it and hit a weakfish fade that stays in play

SS is in the mid 90s

Demo’d a Rogue with Hzrdus yellow stiff 76gr

With my normal swing it was nowhere but right

I started swinging harder and turning it over a little more

It just kept getting straighter and longer through the round.

Couldn’t get it to go left if I tried

Is this too much shaft for my SS? (Might have to recheck it with the new found oomph)

Found this shaft installed in an XR Pro Head for cheap on eBay

Gonna try it in my current head, and the XR too I guess

I can get my money back out of it if not lol

Doesn't matter. As long as it's right for what you want to do. I always preferred heavier shafts as I swing more aggressively. Maybe the heavier shaft helps you feel the club more and keeps the hands quieter. It's not going to slow you down that much. Could also be the clubhead a little? Wouldn't hurt to try different shafts anyway.

I play a Blueboard 73x, which scarcely counts as an x flex shaft. It's kind of like when a kitten hisses at you and you're all like, "Aww..."

There are other shafts which are much more robust, and that many players will use because you have to really put a confident move on them to get them to work. I vary my speed depending on the hole and the shot, so the Blueboard works well for me in that regard.

Seems to be helping

No OB or lost balls off the tee today

Didn’t count fairways hit, but it was above average for me

Put a couple out past 260, more than I’m used to, and even put a baby draw on it once

Only ball way right was a weak over the top move

Don’t know if a fitting would put me in this shaft, but I’m playing it for the rest of the season

You have pretty much answered your own question. Whatever performs best is always the right fit.

I have always preferred non left shafts, and not necessarily 70+ grammers but stout shafts like Graf blue.

Like you I find better results with a shaft that gets better the harder I go at it, I just feel more confident knowing left is out of play. As long as you can load it it isn't too much shaft.

I think it’s around 68 and my swing speed is 85, the best for me.

I'm on the high side of average. But since I've gone to 70+ and 80+ in my driver and 3 wood I've been more accurate. Haven't had my clubs swingweight checked but I have lead tape on my metals as well.

Ping Tour 75 stiff, low 90s swing speed. The heavier shaft helps me swing the driver with a normal swing like my irons, instead of a separate ‘driver swing’.

Like Double Dutch, I play a G400 driver with a Ping Tour 80 (75g) shaft. Got that shaft in my 4 wood and 7 wood too. Now what shaft should I have in my irons??

77g shaft in my driver and 3 woods (same shafts) Aldila Rogue Silver 70 stiff. My fitter put me in it last year. SS = 94. As I was not convinced that it was the best fit for me, I recently did a short driver fitting for $50 with Trackman results and tried similar profile lighter shafts...nothing gave me as high swing speeds / ball speeds / contact as the heavier shaft. On paper, The stiff shaft is really borderline as being too much for my SS, but regulars were all over the place.

So it really depends on your swing / how you load, etc. Go figure.

Hzrdus Yellow 75 5.5 in my G400. Probably right at 70-72 once cut for length (45.25)

Heavier and softer flex has worked great for me. In line with what monkeyboy above stated.

I get much better numbers on Trackman, and I thought I was doing well with my old Speeder 661 (66gm) stiff, but my distance and dispersion both improved with the new set up.

Maybe also relevant to consider how hard you're working to get it to go straight. If it's so much that you're going to be worn out at the end of the round, or unable to play two days in a row, etc, just something to keep in mind. Going through a similar dilemma myself with a shaft that feels like a board but can't draw it if I try. If I put all my effort into it, it's straight or a slight fade... But honestly, I'm not sure I want to work that hard. I'm ordering a slightly lighter shaft to play around with and see how it goes. To each their own. Definitely something valuable about taking one miss out on play, but I'd like to be able to draw it at least a little bit if I want to.
