Help please with tall for age junior

Recommended Posts

I have a 11 year old son who is currently playing the cobra junior set. He is 5 feet 1 inches tall and weighs 70lbs (skin and bones). It seems to me the clubs are borderline too short for him. I've taken a look at the ping prodi g irons but they only go to 5' 2" and to be honest they are quite expensive for my budget and an ever growing boy. I'm not sure of his swing speed but he carries his current 7 iron around 115 yards.

I am quite a competent club builder having always changed out my own shafts. The problem I have is, is he a bit light for senior or ladies flex? I read that ladies ap1s come with kuro kage graphite shafts and I'm pretty sure they have a neutral colour scheme unlike some cobra ladies irons etc. Would these be a good match? I have also seen several sets of cobra fly z combo sets with senior flexes, could these be cut down?

It's an absolute minefield of combinations for the junior-youth player. I'm really not sure whether to go ladies/senior, graphite/steel (kbs junior shafts are 90 grams ?), any help would be great.

Ps. He doesn't like the look us kids and flynn are not widely available in Europe

Thanks

What's his driver swing speed? If you don't know, take his current driver to your local golf mart and have him hit a dozen or so into the nets on their radar. Not perfect, but gives you a starting point. The KBS junior steel shafts are "built for juniors" and have good reviews. Otherwise, I'd look at ladies or senior flex graphite.

Also, look at some of the adult irons mentioned here: https://thejuniorgolfer.com/teen-golf-clubs/

Yes, you could cut down the senior flex shafts on the Cobra Fly-Z irons. For example, if you built your own clubs by buying heads and shafts (in ladies or senior flex), you would have to cut them down anyway. Given your junior's height, you are not cutting down that much anyway. Plenty of juniors shorter than yours use senior/ladies shafts cut down more than you will have to.

It's certainly a minefield. It costs $$$. If you are really concerned, you could go get fit somewhere.

Thanks for your replies. To be honest 115 is being conservative, if he flushes one he can get it out to 125-130 (as he did today on a hole) but that's him timing it perfectly. I think I'll go with a senior or ladies set then. I'm guessing around a 41 inch driver length would be about right for him but does anyone have an idea of a suitable length for a specific club at his height (say 6 iron)

Looking at specs of us kids golf 63 against callaway xr, am I right in saying length for those 2 would only be around half an inch shorter for the us kids 63? I know I've said he's 61 inches but he is comfortable gripping down and the way he is growing it will last him a bit longer. That has shocked me if true, I thought I'd need to cut down a lot more. Also if that's the case alot of senior and ladies are shorter in length anyway?

41" driver probably fine based upon USKG specs.

> Thats a shame. How did he get on with the ap1s whilst he had them? I read one post that said they aren't suitable launch wise for youths, although I'm not sure what the reasoning why was

I had them bent two degrees weak to ensure proper height on shots and descent angle into greens. I have a guy that does my loft and lie adjustments for $5 a club.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

I would follow us kids length on irons and go an inch more on driver. That has worked for us. Definitely go weaker lofts and correct flex shaft. Launch is your friend. I can’t stress lie angle. Most OEMs are 2* upright to mizuno and likely anyone under 5’3” needs a degree flat to mizuno (not taking into effect fitting, but based on height alone). Players clubs with weaker lofts would be my recommendation for irons. Nippon Zelos or 850 in regular or r2 flex for shafts.

Thanks for that, you'd recommend steel shafts at his age, weight and height, that's interesting, wasn't sure.

So to confirm your recommendations regarding lie, it should be at least a degree flatter to mizuno specs, so 60 (6 iron) 62 (8 iron)?

Also I've been look at ust m6, prolaunch blue and UST-Mamiya Recoil 660. Anyone have an opinion on the suitability of these?

I know I'm driving people crazy with the questions but can someone answer me this one quickly please. I've just seen a set of xr steelheads with a 7 iron of 35 inches (matrix p f15 graphite shafts). I think the us kids 60 is 35 inches for a 7 iron but is that for kids from 60" or up to 60" (my boy is 61). I suppose if it is up to then I could put graphite extension in them couldn't I?

Promise that's the last questions ?

USKG 60" is for kids 60" to 62.9999999999999999999999999" tall.

Here are specs for my 59” 10-year old. Obviously, lie is not only a height/wrist to floor measurement but it works well and I would err on the side of flatter:

I have 1* flat from mizuno as follows:

5 iron - 59.5*

Move in .5* upright increments until you reach PW which is at 62* as are his 50, 54 and 58 wedges.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a 9 year old that wears 12/14 , 62" , 76#

Greatest move I ever made was putting him in regular graphite and sr steel. He picked up 30 yards on driver and two clubs w irons. Came from lady flex driver and Sr graphite.
