Can a fitting be used for suggestions?

I haven't been fitted for anything in years, so I'm curious. If I go to get a "fitting" can I go and hit some balls and have them tell me "These drivers/irons/whatever would fit your swing well" or does it have to be you pick a club, then hit some balls, and they tell you whether it's good or bad for you? I only ask because right now I'm looking to get new clubs in the short to medium term, but don't even know where to start or what I like.

Its a little bit of both. Obviously everyone has preferences on looks, sound and feel. You tell them what your looking for and even your problems with your current equipment/game and a good fitter will start from there.

Yeah hopefully its a little of

- what are you hitting now?

- what are your misses/tendencies?

- what are you looking for in a club, from a look/feel perspective?

Then they should just start handing you clubs to try.

Pretty much this. They are there to help guide you and give you the available info to make an informed decision. Shouldn't be pressured into one OEM or another, the stats should bear out all that is needed and you will have your own impressions of each (sound/feel, results, looks, price points).

I'd never had a real fitting until earlier this year. Our club only sells Mizuno. So i used the Mizuno optimizer. There's an older version and a newer one, but try and use the newer one. My fitter said it's better. Its mounted on to an actual shaft and you swing it and it tells you all your specs. Lie angle, lengths, release point, and etc. Then it suggest to you, optimized shafts. In my opinion, it works. It suggested kbs tour 120s, (the ones i really didn't want, I wanted Nippons), but the kbs was a ton better for me. Then, they'll actually put those shafts in a head and let you hit them with each shaft. Even if you don't want mizunos, you can take your specs, and your "suggested" shafts elsewhere and buy whatever you want.

As a fitter, I always conduct an interview to help narrow it down. Then on to hitting some clubs and narrow it even more. Getting fit should be fun and informative. Hope you find the right fitter!? Enjoy the experience.

Ok, from what you are all saying that makes sense. I guess the next question is what us a "good" fitter? Are the people at Golf Galaxy / Dick's good enough?

in my opinion no. I worked part time at golf galaxy and there's not enough proper training to really dial in to someones swing and tendencies compared to club champion or true spec golf...also they're very limited on the shaft selections which does play a huge role in optimal numbers. No everyone doesnt benefit from a $400 shaft, but most time the upgraded shafts are superior to stock offerings

if I was you id pay the $100 to get a proper fitting where you can test multiple heads and shafts. see what you like and prefer, then go on the secondary market and build it yourself....or if you end up in a $400 shaft, look at the profile of the shaft and find something similar and cheaper

ask questions about what you're hitting. see if a counter balanced shaft is working better for you than non counter balanced. Is it a high launch/low spin shaft, low launch/low spin...how heavy is the shaft and flex. ask as many questions as you can so you are informed and know what to look for if you decided to build your own driver from eBay or somewhere else...or maybe even instead of buying stock off shelf, order a custom driver off any OEM website where they will have more options of free shafts vs the 2-3 offered in stores

Not really - what part of the world are you in? I'm sure someone can assist you. A really good fitter is night and day difference than GG/Dicks.

GG/Dicks are not real fittings. Neither are 'demo days'. Though you can get some good swings in with lots of different equipment those ways...

Looks like there's a GolfTec in Toledo you could try. Otherwise you end up having to go to Columbus to find a good one, like True Spec. Not sure what Fort Wayne has anymore.

Thanks for the info. I think I'm going to hold off for now though. I'm in the middle of trying to lose weight and figure I should hold off until I reach my stable weight. Maybe it'll be my present to myself when I'm done.
