Great customer service form Ping - Replaced my cracked G30 but its not a like for like replacement

jubilee_links

Recommended Posts

A couple of years back I pick up a G30 LST with Tour 65 shaft 2nd hand form a big retailer in the UK -

Last month the hosel cracked (as many G30s do) and Ping said I should return it via the dealer -

They have sent a replacement but its not really like for like -

I sent back a 10.5 G30 LST - replaced with a 9 G LST

I had a tour 65 shaft stiff (0.5 inch short) - replaced with an Alta 55 stiff standard length -

It looks like an ex demo head as there are a few marks and scuff on it

Its great that Ping replaced my driver even though I was not the original owner however am I being picky when what they have sent back is relatively 'different from my original.

Not tested yet but I am worried that I wont have enough speed to launch a 9degree LST driver ......

I’m surprised they gave you anything. The G30 series is what? 3 generations old now? 4?

I had TM replace an M3 with an M5 but it seems that’s like me getting an M5 for returning an R1.

Are you sure Ping sent it not just your retailer being nice?

Some flavor of the month driver.
Some driving iron for Links courses.

A hybrid to save my bad shots.
Titleist blades when I feel lucky otherwise something more forgiving.
A Vokey wedge or 2.
I hate every one of my 17 putters.

It's a very nice gesture that the OEM wil give you anything for an outdated driver which is out of warranty and not even with original ownership.

Not every manufacturer will do that these days with tight budget and increased competition for less sales volume.

If it works, great, if it does not, you can always sale it.

Did you discuss with the Ping customer rep of keeping the G-30 shaft, since you sounded like you were in love with that shaft ?

I was being a bit picky - as I said its great that they replaced it -

TBH I was expecting a G head on my old shaft and not a complete replacement.

Just need to see if I can hit the thing - but as you say - a near replacement with more residual value is better than than no replacement....

WIth that shaft i'd guess it launches higher than your G30. To me shaft is a much bigger determinant of launch. I have a 10 degree G400 Max with an 80 Black Tie and the thing launches low.

I'm surprised they replaced it as others have said. I know you were not complaining so not picking on you. That's just a pretty old driver and i always wonder how long they are actually supposed to last with regular use. Theoretically you could just buy a driver than never buy another one, just play them till they break and get free ones .

I always feel like after 2, maybe 3 years....at that point you just gotta buy a new one, but that's me

Sell it on ebay and buy a G30 LST on ebay. The G30 can be had for as little as $40. I'm sure you can sell the G for over $100.

You did learn a lesson here: don't send back a shaft that you really like to the OEM. Always put something else in it.

I'd send it back to Ping, I find it highly unusual that they would give you a replacement where both the loft and shaft don't match your old driver. Quite a few posts of people getting Ping drivers replaced (including G30 recently) and its almost always been with a comparable current model. At the very least they should have given you back your Tour shaft which should work with the G and a replacement head weight to get your SW back up with the shorter shaft. I'd push them a little bit.

I wonder if that was disclosed to Ping?

Either way, they are top notch. And making a complaint thread over them helping you out is uncalled for. You ask if you’re being picky? I’d say ungrateful is the appropriate word.

I don't think the OP was being too entitled in his post. I think we should take it easy on him. We've answered the question and he's been respectful

I was totally honest with ping uk - contacted them through the website explaining what happened stating that I had purchased the club 2nd hand and how long I had been using it for, and they advised to send it back to them via a ping approved outlet. Retailer also advised ping that it had been a used purchase so they were completely aware. So big bonus points for ping.

From looking at various threads on here and other sites there have been a of of cracked hosels on G30s so maybe they replaced it as its a known defect -

Its great that I got a replacement this far down the line. As I said before - I thought id get a replacement head as opposed to a whole new club.

Ping has no obligation to do like it like for a club that old. It’s a nice thing they did for a customer who didn’t buy the broken club new

OK - I have changed the title of the thread to avoid it looking like a complaint

I am amazed that the ping sent a replacement - great service.

Haven't looked in a while but I don't recall ever seeing a G30 on eBay for anywhere close to $40. Not even a G10.

lookit his response two replies above yours

He changed the topic title and says he got great service

I think Ping did a real good thing, seeing as the OP bought this second hand

Glad he's happy with what they did, even if it wasn't exactly the same head.

It's great of Ping to have taken care of the OP at all.

But it is odd that they would replace it with something so far off without communicating. They might well say that the 9 deg G launch is comparable to the 10.5 in the G30, but at the very least get the shaft right. They offered the same in shaft in the G so that shouldn't have been that hard, or stick the existing shaft in there. Obviously if they found a problem with the shaft or adapter, that could have been an issue too.

Seems that some communication on Ping's part could have gone a long way. When I sent a putter in to WRX there were some things they found they could not do and reached out to me before doing anything and explained the options.
