Old unused dozen pga Balata golf balls

Recommended Posts

I was cleaning out an area of my golf storage unit (aka my garage) and I came across a forgotten relic from yesteryear. 1 dozen pga balata golf balls in original box and sleeves. Don’t know why I held on to em and not sure I remember where they can from.

just thought my classic golfing friends would appreciate seeing them.

any info or idea of value?

They were pretty good golf balls...when they were new. I knew quite a few people who played them back then and I played them some. The 100's always seemed a little "hot" compared to a Titleist. Some brands and different compressions of balatas had a different sound and when you hit them they would seem to fly off the face quicker than other brands. But after about 6 or 9 holes not so much. That was a reason why you changed balls in tournament play after 3 or 4 holes. If you tried to play more holes than that you couldn't rely on hitting your iron shots consistent distances. You might lose a couple of yards which in a tournament can be a disaster if you trying to carry a bunker or water. Now playing for fun you could play balatas all day, unless you hit one thin and cut it.

Memories - when golf equipment was made in Illinois. I lived near the Morton Grove factory. PGA made items under their name plus RAM, Tommy Armour and more.

If you do not play them they are fun to use around the short game area chipping and putting. Most of my HTs and Titleist have been hit and it shows it on full shots. I do have 3 Palmer Balatas courtesy of our fellow WRXer Scooter that he sent me a couple of moons back. I use those balls to putt with on the practice green and to chip with and reminisce about the days gone by

I like to do that with my wound golfballs that i have left. Its great fun.

I especially enjoiy having some of my friends who've never experienced a wound ball take a putt or chip with one. The reaction is always the same, one of surprise, and even amazement.

Should get access to the ole Iron Byron and put those PGA's up against the MacGregor Tourney to settle once and for all !! ..... since it's always weighed heavily on my mind... Don't know about you guys... Which one is longest!!??

You guys bringing up taking em out around the chipping green sounds like a great idea. I haven't hit a balata since probably late 80's. I was a surlyn guy preferring the DT or DDH, Prostaff to name a few. Will look around the garage or junk drawers next time I visit home. Gotta be some there waiting to see some daylight.

LOL you will know in a heartbeat if they are out of round even slightly. You will get some funky rolls and chips. Sometimes that is even fun. For some reason I could spin the heck out of the Surlyn covered DTs. In fact I am glad you brought up the DDH I have 3 never hit that came in the as he put it "care package" Scooter sent me. Another thing I like to do with balata balls is play the little par 3 up the street from me. Longest hole is 100 yards. Makes it fun playing balata spin golf with vintage wedges. Had 3 buds down a few years back. One is a club pro and a good player in his own right one of the other guys was a then part time Nike Tour player and the 3rd guy played division 1 golf. We had played 36 that day on a real course went to dinner and then up the street to this little par 3. We had went by my shop grabbed a staff bag and had put all sort of vintage wedges and putters in along with about 2 dozen balata balls. you can rent riding carts so we rented one my wife rode and carried the big bag full of clubs. Now this place in the summer is a tourist magnet and we put on a show for the tourist hacks and we had a big time. The Nike Tour guy was really hitting the 56 high and sucking it back 10 feet or so every shot. One hack asked what kind of wedge that was? He told him ask Stu it is his. I looked it was a 53 Top Flite and told the guy so. He looked perplexed. I was putting on my funky little trademark cut swing shot where the ball jumps sideways and trust me it kicks with Balata.
