Cheapest, most accurate, swing speed measuring device?

Looking for a cheap swing speed device to measure the differences in speed as it relates to swing change. This will mostly be for the driver. Anybody use the "Swing Speed Radar Tempo Timer" I see on Amazon? Are the reliable?

Accuracy is the keyword here... how accurate are you looking for? From what ive heard on those, is its sensitive to how you set it up and its position. Just a few inches off and it will give you inaccurate readings. Also keep in mind the golf club is rotating, so a reading on the toe will be faster than the heel. Depending on what it “sees” can fluctuate the numbers.

I had a Mevo, but the numbers were erratic, to say the least, on everything but swing speed, and I returned it. I just want to shy away from spending $500 just to get something just for accurate swing speed and was wondering if something else was out there cheaper to accomplish that.

The mevo usually has pretty good reviews. Ive heard good things about the prgr. I think its about 200 bucks. I have a voicecaddie sc100 and it does a decent job. Id say i get about 2 out of 10 shots, where the accuracy may be a little wonky. You can get those new for about 180.

I think the swing speed radar that SSG sells is pretty accurate. $100.

Can that one be used indoors?

I don't doubt that it's accurate for the velocity at some point in the swing (any doppler radar device it going to be accurate for measuring velocity).

But the question then really becomes:

1) is it really accurate for determining the swing speed at impact? (it's not a criticism, I have no idea if it is nor not). But if it was designed for working with the swing speed training sticks where there is no ball or impact, I don't know if I'd assume that it pays any attention to impact if a real club is used with a ball.

2) is it important to the OP that it really is the speed at impact? If not, question one is of course a moot point.

Yeah good points Stuart. I can tell you that it seems pretty accurate because I use it to measure ball speed when I'm on the range. If you place the radar in the middle of your stance, it will capture CHS and if you place it a few inches out in front of the ball... you get ball speed. You may not get CHS at impact but honestly... I'd rather have ball speed anyway and just use my judgement on strike and I can kind of guess my CHS.

With my 7i I was seeing normal ball speed for my swing, so I deem it pretty accurate for CHS alone (no ball) and ball speed.

Cheapest and most accurate tend to battle each other. If you don't have a GPS watch you might want to consider the Bushnell Excel. It has a swing speed monitor built in. You turn the feature on the watch on and then pair it with your phone and you get all the data. I'm sure its not as accurate as the single function $1000 units but it tells me when I get faster with different swing techniques. All I need to see is a bigger number. Works great at the range - very helpful.
