I hate overseed month

Recommended Posts

Started playing in January and my game is finally coming around. Shot my first game under 100 last week with a score of 91! So now I got the bug bad and it's overseed time in AZ. All my regular courses are over seeding and I can't even go to the range. So fustrating!!

On a bright note I picked up an Odyssey protype tour series 4ht putter in practically brand new condition for $10 at a garage sale today! Unfortunately I missed out on a $25 Scotty Cameron for $25 by about 5 minutes.

use the overseed calendar, have not run into any issues at all, Been playing courses that have not started overseed yet. Will play Maryvale next couple weekends until the courses that closed in mid Sept start coming off path and are able to cut grass lower.

Hard to feel sorry for you as we are looking at 5 solid months of being snow bound. Even if you have to take a few weeks off, you can use the time to reflect on your game and work on a couple of things to make it better. For me, it's only 7 weeks until I go to Palm Desert for a week so I've got a glimmer of light golf wise. Now to figure out which 3 courses to play. That's the hardest part.

I have no clue what you guys are talking about. Maybe it's living in the south, but do your courses actually shut down for a month while being over seeded? Ours get over seeded and only shut down for the day while it's being done.
[/quote]

Start to finish it is close to an 8 week cycle before courses really become playable here, Weeks 1-4 courses close for overseeding. Higher end tracks usually closed 3-4 weeks.

Some courses overseed 100% some will only do fairways tees and greens while leaving rough and bunker surrounds dormant. After that courses will re open running on cart path only for another 3-4 weeks while the grow in takes hold. During that time the courses are very soggy and greens extremely shaggy.

I hate overseed month (October) too. Living in the Coachella Valley, it means that the previous 5 months of ridiculously cheap golf is over and the next 6 months will bring high greens fees and packed courses (no offense Socrates, the Canadian Snowbirds are great for our economy).

Overseeding even messes with my range time. The courses that are 1/2 mile and 1 mile from my house are now closed for overseeding and I had to drive 2 miles yesterday to find a range that was open!

Okay, get out your souped up gas car (likely goes 30mph) and back into your auto car unless you meant 20 miles and not 2. :)
Heck around here I quite often drive 120 miles (240 round trip) to play golf for a day without breaking a sweat.

Ugh, this is disappointing. I was planning a semi-last minute roadtrip to Palm Springs for the first week of November (from SF) to play Mon-Fri. But looking at the overseeding schedule, of the courses that are actually open that week (about 75%), they will have only been open on average for about 7-12 days since being closed for the overseed.

Not being experienced with southwest overseeding, are conditions likely to be 'that bad' (mushy, playing long, path only, etc) in PSP for early November?

I lived in FL for a couple of years after having lived in AZ most of my adult life (back in AZ now). The first year I lived there I was playing at the club I belonged to on a Saturday and somebody mentioned overseeding. I was surprised that I missed that it was happening and asked how long the course would be closed. The guy I was playing with looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "Tuesday" with an odd look. :) I then explained that overseed in AZ lasts weeks. My club in AZ has been closed for nearly 4 weeks and will open up on Saturday. This is common. The procedure is totally different in the desert than it is in the SE.

Early Nov you will want to find courses that closed early for overseed, if they started in early to mid sept you should be ok

As Blunder says, you should try to find courses that started overseed in mid-September, opened by early-mid October. The simple answer is yes, conditions will be 'that bad' - greens very slow, fairways very shaggy, cart path only - for at least 2-4 weeks after opening after overseed.

Problem for me is the ranges that are a reasonable distance from me are not lit. Most of my range time is after 8PM due to family time and having 2 little kids. But some of them are opening up today. Not sure on the conditions yet. I was going to play Kokopelli in Gilbert on Sunday morning. Got a $25 tee time. I can deal with cart path only but I hope the greens don't suck. I really want to break in that new putter and I want it to roll well.

Anyone have a suggestion for an east valley course that is not garbage from under $30 this weekend?

EDIT: I just called Kokopelli and they said they were going to be cutting them down by tomorrow. So hopefully at least the greens look good. I can deal with a bit of a shaggy fairway. Hell a "shaggy fairway" in AZ is like a normal fairway back east or in the midwest. I think we are just spoiled here.
