Tiger Woods greatest shot of all time

The fairway bunker shot at the Canadian Open and the chip in at the World Cup when he was paired with DD are the two that I always remember. That 6 iron was absolutely obscene. He hit it 217 yards out of a bunker. If DJ did that today we would be thinking that it was a crazy distance to hit a 6 iron but 17 years ago, the guy back then was super human.

 

It was a great shot under pressure but at the same time also overrated. I used to think he took the 6 iron because he had lip trouble and hit the shot extra hard. But if you watch the shot from the blimp you can see that the lip wasn't really in play and it went a ridiculous distance because it was strongly downwind (watch the flagstick).

Again not to say it wasn't a great shot (clearly it was) but it was also a stock 6 iron for him in those conditions.

 

If you watch his swing, it's pretty obvious that wasn't a "stock" 6 iron. At a minimum, he gave it a little extra and was trying to hit it high.

His greatest shot was probably some crazy shot from an impossible lie during a friendly round with Mark O'Meara and David Duval in like 2000 with a bet for 100$.

Otherwise, the greatest shot should probably be the one that gave the maximum drama. And that chip on hole 16 in the duel against DiMarco in Masters 2005 had everything. Including that small Nike hesitation on the lip of the hole before plunking down, making Tiger and Williams go bananas..

I actually think that might have been at The European Club in Wicklow. Maybe 1997?

He played with Duval, O Meara and Scott McCarron. He hit a ridiculous 3iron. He still holds the course record.

It's an unbelievable course. No GPS allowed. Just painted stones as tee markers.

My favorite shot was a bit different. I recall in his first year or so, may have been at the Crosby/ATT, he was hitting his second shot from 270 out on a par 5. McCord was on the call and was surprised Tiger was laying up with an iron. Tiger hit a 2 iron like a wedge. Huge high fade that came down softly about 12-15 feet from the pin. McCord was incredulous and giddy as he described the shot.

This may not be Tiger's absolute best ever shot, but it's certainly underrated and doesn't get nearly enough love (probably because he didn't go on to win the tournament!).
