Shorter backswing for better... everything?

Thats quite possible. i'm not sure what changes he's currently trying to make in his swing. I know he's said that when he gets in trouble it's usually because his swing gets too quick and short. With that being said I think he still has a very interesting move. He has a very big turn but short arm position. Check out the butt end of his shaft at the top of his swing. its past his heels creating a lot of depth and he's able to create some serious speed from there.

My backswing was always super long thanks to watching early-years Daly as a kid. Of course, in my teens - I had the flexibility to easily make a huge shoulder turn to support it and I would use seeing the clubhead out of the corner of my left eye as a cue to begin my transition.

 

Fast forward ... 25 years or so; my shoulders just don't turn as much. This was one of the first things my coach noted to me - I mean, my freakin 56° was going well past parallel on a full swing. He was like "go back as far as you want as long as your shoulders are doing the turning and you're not just pulling your arms across your body."

 

So yeah, shortening everything has been a big point of focus. And it's been tough because of that visual cue. It FEELS like I'm barely out of my takeaway yet he'll show me video where he tells me to stop and I'll feel like the club is pointing straight up like I'm hitting a 1/2 pitch or something but nope; I'm at just about parallel.

I do better with this when I think in terms of faster to or earlier transition. Also find swing length in context of the club being held gains more importance. Short irons have much less arm lift, metals much more. Shorts are body pivot driven & arms somewhat passive, metals, there's more equilibrium, arms even retain some dominance. Painting with a broad brush across the bag is defeating to a degree.

I need to copy Tony Finau. Forget that he is a highly trained athlete currently in the top 15 in the world. Ignore the fact that I am not blessed with an abundance of fast twitch muscles, nor do I have the hand/arm strength to support a swing that short and violent. Yep, Tony has the action I need to emulate.
