Counterfeit golf clubs in retail shops

Does anyone ever come across clubs that you can tell are obvious fakes being sold in retail stores? I've only seen them in the used club section, and I know the fakers are getting more advanced, but still. I've seen this a few times at Play it Again Sports type places, which I could understand since the people who work at those types of places aren't going to be experts on every single thing. But recently I see some fake clubs in the used section of a very well know golf chain. I sent the manager an email about it and he says we'll handle it, I go back a few weeks later and they're still sitting there for sale. Waiting for some sucker who thinks he's getting a great deal.

Ive seen it at big box shops and local places. The local places took them away, and I even saw one in the dumpster the next day when I drove past. The big store could have cared less. I guess it depends on management and how they train or what they do when it is brought to their attention.

I’ve seen a couple sets of Mizunos at a Play it Again Sports. They were very obvious to me, but probably wouldn’t even get noticed by your non WRXer.

My local play it again had a set of blatantly fake Titleists in their used section, AP2's maybe, I can't remember exactly. The font on the script was so far off it wasn't funny. I mentioned it, and the guy at the counter said he'd let the manager know, and they stayed there all summer. Fortunately they were so bad, no one bought them.

My local golf galaxy actually had a fake Scotty that was obvious. I told them it should be removed and they said since they took it in trade they needed to get their money back essentially. They freely admitted it was a fake and said yea one of the “new” people took it on trade, but no trade is processed without a manager so tough to believe. Needless to say I haven’t bought anything from that golf galaxy in a bit. Just really rubbed me the wrong way.

Play It Again does not usually have extremely knowledgeable golfers on staff. They are usually an easy target for someone wanting to sell or trade counterfeit golf gear.

I would have reported that directly to Titleist

Unfortunately very common. The big box store I worked at during our trade-in bonus days would see its fair share of fake stuff that made it past. Usually by the old, retired guys who had very limited club knowledge. A lot of the younger staff tended to be up on it and told people as such, and sometimes you would have guys argue with you that it was real because the seller said it was. Only to pull up real pictures or the same club next to it and have it be miles off.
