Recommended Posts

Looking for some reviews on these now that they have been out for a bit? is the honeymoon over or still in love with these?

I'm currently playing Apex pro 19's and looking for something a little different......Interested if anyone has the Modus 120 shaft and what the ball flight looks like High, Mid High?

Thanks in advance!

I had a demo session with the 4 iron and 7 iron with them, and did the same with the Mizuno HMB’s, both in a Modus 120x and found then to be very similar in performance.

I enjoyed them very much. I couldn’t tell any noticeable difference in feel between the Cobra and Mizuno HMB’s honestly with the Modus 120X shafts

I have a slower tempo with an easy transition and late release. In the modus 120x they were mid flight for my swing. My swing speed with a 7 iron was 94 mph. I have hit DGX100’s for the past 20 years almost, so everything seems high to me, but the fitter said it was a very mid flight.

My spin wasn’t high either compared to the set I was gaming (Mizuno MP-67’s with DG X100’s) but, the cobra and HMB’s were both lofted 1 full club stronger, so I had to compare flight and spin numbers in them against my Mizuno’s 6 and 3 iron. For instance, the Cobra and HMB’s 7 irons both went 182 yards while my MP-67 6 iron went 186 yards. They all carried within a yard of one another. I found the Cobra King forged tec to be the most forgiving. If I miss hit, it’s a couple of grooves low, I almost never get toe or heel strikes. I caught a few low with each demo club, as well as my gamers at the time, and it was night and day. The Cobras maintained the same distance with a low strike, while the HMB’s were great as well, only 2-3 yard loss for me......... my Mp’s were around 10yard loss.

I was seriously considering the Cobra Forged tec or the HMB’s, but ended up getting a mint set of used Titleist T-MB’s for less than half the money, so I didn’t have to make that decision.

My MP-67’s 6 iron with the DG X100 shafts was about 6500 rpm while the Cobra, as well as the HMB’s In the modus 120X shafts were about the same with a 7 iron 6500+ rpm’s for reference.

Hope that provides you with some insight.

I thought the Cobra Forged Tec were great...... I have not hit anything other than forged blades for 25 years until searching for a new set recently, and I was pleasantly surprised by their performance.

I have P790’s. I’ve only hit the Cobra 7 iron with stock shaft in S. So take this for whatever you think.

+

The Cobra greatly reduces the P790’s unhappiness with thin shots. The tungsten is lower, further back, and only towards the toe. It’s a significant improvement.

The Cobra’s head size is significantly larger, and the sweet zone is corresponding increased.

-

The Cobra’s loft distribution is obviously non-standard. While gapping may be adequate for one swing speed / AOA / shaft combination, there’s a significant chance of creating three 5-irons for instance.

The stock shaft length is already 1/2” over standard. Lie will need additional attention as well.

They fly high and don’t spin very much. Less than the P790’s for me. My P790’s came with the stock DG105’s. I found that they flew very high and the short and mid irons were overly affected by wind and were too easy to manipulate, leading to unwanted draws. I changed the shafts to Modus 120’s in S. They brought down the flight, tended to produce straighter shots, and were more controllable left to right. They also reduced spin even more. The result is that they’re almost impossible to stop in a small area. Their only control method is re-entry angle. If you replace their standard high launch shafts the result may not be satisfactory.

I love the longer irons, not sure I'd want to play the entire set though. I'm currently using the 5-iron as a transition club between my iron set (mizzy 919F) and my 21° hybrid and it's an absolute missile launcher. I tend to hit it mid to low flight with a little draw. It goes about 220-225 for me, so I've only had to hit it into par 3's a couple times. It's more of layup on a short par 4 club or maybe reach a par 5 in two after a really good drive option for me. That being said, I haven't had any issue holding greens with it. I never really got along with longer irons before (which is why my iron set stopped at 6), but this thing is addictive to hit and super forgiving.

FYI, I'm using a modus3 105s shaft (same as my iron set).

These irons have been confusing me a bit. Maybe someone can enlighten me as to what I may be doing wrong.

I am coming off of Ping i200 with Modus 120x, and have interestingly seen my distances dip a bit. I saw a used set for a really good price, so I took the bait. The only difference is that the shaft is Modus 120 stiff.

My Ping i200's, I was hitting my 7 iron carry ~175-180, ball speed around 120, the loft was 33 deg.

With the forged tec 7 iron, I am getting 160-170 carry, similar ball speed, I believe the loft is 27.5 deg.

I suspect the reason has to be that I suck at golf, but I'm hoping that's not the only reason..

I think my launch was a couple degrees lower, I don't recall the specific numbers. My spin was in the mid 5000's, normally in the low 6000's. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me as the spin numbers dropped, so logically should have flown farther? Definitely a bit confused, but the clubs still work fine, I just plan on having them carry less and roll out more. Even if I wanted to replace them, I am too much of a peasant. I may try weakening the lofts, though I still can't wrap my head around how that would even help.
