Vokey SM5 removing black finish down to raw ( a how to pic heavy)

I want to do this to my putter. I have a Cleveland Classic Black #1

cleveland-golf-classic_black_platinum_1_money-2.jpg

I tried to soak it in some crazy industrial crap but ended up burning my skin and the fumes were getting to my eyes, baaaad. I ended up saying screw it and threw it out. Now my putter looks like complete dog poo.

Will mineral spirits clean up the paint? That's about all I have aside from the acetone that my wife uses on her nails.

Approximately how long did you leave them in the CLR for each time? Did you remove all the paint before dipping them?
[/quote]

The paint fill will not be effected by this process. I removed mine deliberately after removal of the black finish.

I soaked the wedges in CLR overnight on both occasions. You may not need to do it that long. 3-4 hours would probably work.

Soaked in CLR for just under two hours last night.
Not the greatest pic but they turned out well.
The paint that has been removed was done so before the CLR.

My wedges came out looking like yours. How long did you leave yours in the CLR for? I've noticed that other wedges on this page look more silver like.

I suggest going over them with steel wool and then a heavy duty Scotch Brite. That will even out the finish. Then repeat the process if necessary. I ended up soaking mine three times, twice overnight.

Soaked mine for under two hours, did not scrub.
The silver finish like Wolfs comes from multiple soakings and some good scrubbing.

Does anyone know if this process would work with the Cobra Tour Trusty wedges with the Black PVD finish? Got a friend at the club that is wondering

Has anyone noticed the ferrule separating when soaked in CLR? VInegar? or Coke?

One shouldn't have any effect on the other.

I've done 3 sets now, the first two with just Coke for 12hrs, and this set with plain white vinegar for an hour. The vinegar works so well that I think I could have taken them out after a few minutes. A quick scrub with some Scotchbrite and a dunk in very cold water and these came out exactly as I wanted them to.

On a side note, I used "Heirloom Cleaner" (a furniture stripper) to remove paintfill and again, it takes only seconds and required just a quick brush with an old toothbrush. Almost too easy.

Did you guys use distilled white vinegar? That's all I could find. I soaked it for about 24 hours and had to use a scoring pad then washed it and used some sand paper to get it where it is now.

I also drilled a small dot on the top sole to help my eye with aim. I like it a lot so far but the true test will be on the course Sunday. Let's hope I can break 30 putts! lol.

I removed the paint fill from my irons and am going to fill it with a metallic red to match my Covert woods this weekend too.

Thanks man. Yeah, I want to clean up the shiny area a bit. I'm going to probably use my friends dremel with a sanding bit on it because the finish that's on the bottom does not want to dull with just normal sand paper. I was considering paintfilling it but the more I look at it, the more I like the looks of it without the paintfill.

I like it raw too. Ever think about putting a shine on the bottom and leave the rest kind of matte like that? Seen it done a couple times now and it's a really cool look. Either way well done!

Not sure how I'd go about doing that. What do you mean? Do you have an example? I like the matte finish all around. What I really want to do is get a media blast to my Mizuno MP69s to give them a satin look and then give them a metallic blue filling. That'd be so sexy!

Wetsand with from coarse to less coarse sand paper, using 1000, then 2000, then 3000. Finally use a polishing compound to buff to a shine. I think it adds a different mystique to it a bit.

CLR works the best IMO
but that black finish on the SM5's is a little tougher, it needs some extra work w a scotch write pad too
Ive done MD originals, MD2's, SM5's and VR Forged wedges and the SM5's were the hardest
still got em done no probs tho

I always tape the ferrule off and don't submerse them in the CLR for those of you asking
