If you go over double par ,do you take the double and move on, or keep going till you hole out?
I am fortunate to not have to cross that bridge often... But when I do, I grind it out.

Following the rules you hole it out, especially if you're playing a stroke play event / bet. If I'm not, I've picked up for the sake of speed. I'd be using ESC on that hole for capping purposes
Yeah, this.

Usually for the sake of speed if I am beyond a triple it is time to move on.

However, under Rule 32-2b in Stableford, if a player fails to complete a hole, he is disqualified for that hole only (score is zero points).

It's interesting to me that even Rule 1-1 is controversial.

And I can't find the part of Rule 32 that says you should pick up . . . only the part that says you are not penalized additionally if you do.

It's common practice and courtesy in Stableford to pick up when you can not score points, just as it is in match play when you concede a hole.
Imo, this perceived need to "grind it out" to score a 13 or 16 in stroke play is a cause of many of the ills that the game suffers from these days - slow play, no fun, too hard, silly rules etc. And it seems to be peculiar to North America. Stroke play is not the only form of play acceptable under the Rules.

I agree to all of this. And if I could add, there is a stark contradiction most of the time, where a person may say, "I'm just out having fun. I don't need to play by all the rules" yet they'll torture themselves trying to get on the green in 9 with 2 balls in the water, just so they can put a number on their card. It's just odd.

It's also common practice in match play to practice putt after a hole is conceded to you.

And it's shocking that the peculiar behavior of we North Americans is the cause of many of golf's ills throughout the world.

In match play or Stableford I would play the hole out.
Why?
Well, obviously I'm struggling somewhere... Why not try to work it out where it won't penalize me to do so rather than trying to work it out on the next hole and losing that one too?

In a stroke play comp you must hole out. Otherwise card your most likely score for handicap with ESC, take a deep breath, pretend it's still fun and try to relax on the next tee. It's a game, not war to the last man standing.

If every learning or bad golfer finished every shot every hole, or had to, the game would be on a faster decline that it is now.

I shot a 109 in a tourney this weekend and had three 9's on my score (all on par 4s). You grind it out until holed. WHen you enter handicap, THAT is when it gets adjusted.

Yep, that's what you must do in stroke play tournaments (I'll bet it was fun too).
However, why bother to do that in casual rounds or club competitions (other than club championship). Why not consider match play, par, bogey or Stableford to make it faster, more fun and less frustrating. (It feels good when I stop beating my head against the wall.)

Because enduring and overcoming significant setbacks is enriching. If people didn't like the challenge it poses, they would of course do as you suggest.

Not to mention any live Nassaus.

In my league, I've got at least 6 of those a week, Saturdays, 3 or more.

Hey , if a guy beats me by 4 on the front, and he's struggling on a hole, he is not picking up and carding a double just because it's not the club championship.

ESC will adjust the handicaps, holing the ball will decide the score.

While I certainly agree, people don't take up the game to build character. I'd wager that over the years the game has revealed much more character than it has built.

Guy in my league gave me a NASTY 6' sidehiller (at least 12" of break given the quickness of the putt) last week for birdie because he had already holed out for net eagle.

He realized two holes later that there was a net game when I failed to concede his 30-incher for double:

Opponent: "This is for 7" (implied plea for concession)

Me: "..."

O: *stares with incredulity*

Me: "There's a net game for the 9 as well as the hole-by-hole**... sorry"

O: *misses putt via hurried, affronted jab-stroke*

** I think at least half the league is under the impression that the format is pure match play by the fact that numerous people have said "You're/I'm closed out" on the 9th tee... doesn't matter the hole is still worth 2 points just like the 8 prior!

Hey, giving 10 shots in a 9-hole match week in and week out can wear on you!
