LIVE From The Nike Golf Vapor Irons Launch Aug 18

Recommended Posts

Man these look awesome! Don't have any Nike clubs in the bag and never have for that matter but I think I will have to give the Pro Combos a good hard look once the snow melts in Michigan next spring.

I'll also say this, while you can't change a blade that much like a lot of folks are saying, I really appreciate Nike's efforts to TRY. Will they be revolutionary like the Eye2's were? Nope, probably not. But fact of the matter is Nike is really trying something different while a lot of folks are making small tweaks to the same design and I do appreciate that.

From the Nike website:

When studying Tiger's blades, The Oven team noticed that the wear pattern was directly on the center of the club face, not trending towards the heel where the bulk of the club's weight is carried and where he could achieve a more efficient strike. Our club designers knew that they hadn't yet optimized the traditional blade for Tiger. They knew they could do better.
"We had this idea, if we moved the CG towards the center of the face that it would have more impact and more mass right behind the golf ball. And it worked. I was able to hit the ball a little bit further, it came off more solid, and the amazing thing is the ball flew better." - Tiger
Working with Tiger to find a solution, the craftsmen at The Oven started drilling holes towards the toe of his irons and filling it with a weighted tungsten plug. An approach that changed the club's CG, offering the purest hit possible and giving birth to what would eventually become Modern Muscle technology. Modern Muscle technology achieves the same adjustment in CG, but does so through geometry instead of a tungsten plug. This updated design method pushes weight to the toe of the club, shifting the center of gravity to the middle of the club face. The face-centered CG is right where it needs to be for optimum performance, precision, stability and ball speed.

Does anyone actually believe that Tiger didn't know where the sweetspot was on his irons? That he just hit the ball in the middle and couldn't feel the difference or figure out to move his impact slightly toward the heel?

Does Nike not know that Ping and Srixon have been been using tungsten plugs in the toe to center the sweetpot for the last four or five years?

Have they heard of the Titleist DCI? For those not old enough to remember, DCI stands for Direct Central Impact or something like that. The big selling point was that the sweetspot was centered on the face. In 1993.
I was wondering about that as well. I heard that in the 90's but thought that was fixed in all clubs these days. Is that not the case?
Nope. Most blades have the sweetspot toward the heel. Some old school pros like there, probably because it's always been that way and they are used to it. I don't believe for one minute that Tiger wasn't aware of this, but many people are not, and try to hit blades in the center, which is a big reason they are regarded as so difficult to play.

As a good golf brand ambassador said to me tonight, "people on golfwrx are losers, they want Titleist 680's every year, re-released, anything new they hate..."

I think I heard the same type of comments in the 915 ARC pre-release, the BB Alpha Forum, the I25 racing stripes, the G30 turbulators, the Covert red, and whatever else I have seen LOL.

We will see the reviews the first week of November on WRX saying:
"How amazing they play"
"Don't even notice the colour scheme"
"How etc. etc. etc. they are...."

My point is that Nike did what they wanted to do, have 30,000+ views on WRX, trend on Twitter, and be all over social media...Nike again proves why it leads in the hype machine and dominates in sport...it's not their products, although the RZN Black and Covert are phenomenal....

I will stick with my 714's, but good for Nike....relevance is key....

Golf is losing players by the bus load and all you guys can do is complain about the world's leading sports company putting some black and yellow on a nice looking set of irons? I hope with all my heart that these clubs get some younger people interested in the game. Nike started getting radical with Oregon's football jerseys a few years ago and look where that program is now. Let's bring that excitement back to the game of golf!

I'll be at a fitter in Ft. Worth soon. I'm hoping he might have a set to have a go with.

Maybe TW asked for new clubs to be designed to compensate for his Foley inspired swing and the recent results.

Forget the color issue. The specs look like they are in the sweet spot for irons. Long irons of the pro combos are nice. That set looks like a player to me.

The blade has higher bounces than Mizuno MP-4 by a few degrees and less offset than the M4's
The Pro-Combos are all forged and the 3-7 have an RZN insert for performance yet the 8-pw are all feel and a solid non packet forged head
The Viper speed has less offset than the Mixuno JPX-825 Pro for a GI type head. Bet they are cannons.

I black is a time out and let me get used to it. But we adjusted to color surprises before. I also think we are only through the 1st quarter of the ball game here. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Woods, wedges, putters and balls are yet to be seen.

Only got to page 14, but I would definitely buy the Pro Combos. It just won't be this season and I'd be hard pressed to convince the Mrs I need new irons next year :/ I may be in the minority, but I like the design/colours. This release definitely makes me want to wait a season or two before upgrading my Driver and woods just to see what Nike has in store.

Pro combo irons are more than the blade irons. Very interesting..
Yeah, they'll sell more PC then blades. Just like Titleist and the Ap2's.
Gotcha. I wonder what shaft upgrades they will offer for the PCs and blades?
Looks like suggested and not MAP. Plus that PC price shows 3-A (9 clubs unless a typo).
Yikes. I think they are saying the PC are available 3-AW but then give the price for an 8 piece set. These are not going to be cheap. I'm not quite sure how MSRP compares to what they will actually go for in the shops though. I think they need to price them right in line with the ap2, anything above that is pushing it.

Pro combo 1 degree stronger lofts?!? Why?!?
said because they moved the cg to get a higher ball flight. I asked this question and the engineer Phil said it's not just loft that gets the ball up but weight. I believe it.
