It's not the courses responsibility to make sure you have water.

In fact some places don't have it because they know they can't get their staff around to keep it. in fact we can barely keep track of it and we have 4 pros, 2 managers, 12 counter staff, and 16 outside ops staff that are on the payroll and often have 8 people working at once. Not to mention the abuse they take, hose water (usually from by the wash bay to oddly close to chemicals) is used, and they are impossible to keep cold.

So for many courses they are such a big burden that it doesn't make sense to keep them out there. We cut down on it, and on the hottest of days we take leftover product from the events, load it in ranger carts, and give it away. But other than that.....usually we keep players updated, but don't refill unless someone calls us and tells us it's empty.

On a hot day, in the 90's, how long does a 5 gallon cooler usually last at each watering station?

1-2 hours. Sometimes less.

My club used to have several on course water fountains when I was growing up. Later it went to the big cabinet sized water and ice machines. However even those proved a sanitation problem, and for the last few years the club has provided large coolers of bottled water at 6 locations on the course. In the end the bottled water wasn't that much more expensive.

If I played a course and saw a water jug and drank from it and got deathly ill because the jug was filthy and hadn't been cleaned for months I would sue too. If courses choose not to offer water because they are worried about litigations thays their choose, but golfers shouldn't just assume the risk that they could get reslly sick from the coolers.

Too many posts to read...

I worked in the golf industry for a long time. I NEVER purchase from the bev cart...

I ALWAYS bring drinks with me; waters, water bottle, gatorades, and beers if I'm playing with my group... Staff bag fits a lot.

Sorry world... :beach:

Most courses ban bringing in alcohol and will give you the boot when you are busted.

Never thought much of this until today. Played FOUR MILE RANCH Golf Course today and I realized on the 12 hole they had no water on the course. I always bring my own (1 cold / 2 frozen) but I sometimes re fill if one of the bottles during play.

Was not to hot so was fine today with what I had but I did find this post timely as I am used to water on the courses I normally play. I am not opposed to buying something to drink either, as I would rather pay then suffer if I needed. Just found it interesting as I think this might be one the first courses I found with no water on the course locally.

Happens 5 times a day where I am. Golf course on a college campus, no alcohol at all. We take it away, and if you break out more we offer a raincheck and tell you to go home.

The courses I play are really good about having water available. They are especially concerned about golfers overheating. Coolers are available every 4 holes or so and are kept up. I'll call in if they run low and they usually stop by to find me on the way out to replace the cooler. They are also diligent about cleaning the coolers.

Neglecting to have or maintain water would seem to fail the common sense test. Seems much more likely to result in a successful suit if someone fell out from the heat. The course should be able to provide safe water, it's not that hard to do or unreasonable to expect. If you believe otherwise, then why aren't the restaurant and food processing industries defunct? Food safety is much harder problem than clean water.

Its called a beverage cart, Golf courses are in the business to make money, do you go to a stadium to watch a game and then go look for a water fountain during the 7th inning stretch?
Stretching because you've been setting for 7 innings vs walking five miles in 90 degree heat... seems like a reasonable comparison. You may choose to buy bottle water in the 7th but you have the option of a fountain if you so choose. I agree that golf courses are in business to make money but it cost money to maintain a practice putting green, so why have one? What amenities does a course choose to eliminate? Should water on the course when it's 95 degrees be one of those? I always bring my own water, it's just nice to have a couple of places on each side to refill
The baseball analogy was a poor one, I admit it. But most course's are offering a way for people to get hydrated, people just think it should be free. I personally will take a few bottles of gatoraide and drink those and if I run out and im still thirsty I will purchase something from the clubhouse or bev cart . With the droughts that are happening across the country, people should be happy that there is enough water to keep the courses open.

I bring two filled thermos containers and have an extra beverage holder on my Clicgear so I can carry two and fill after 9 as needed. The bottles are filled with water and Nuun electrolyte tablets. I have a large bag so I could pack more water too if needed. Some courses in warmer climates I played do have water containers along the course.

I've bought water a few times also but mostly just I bring my own, regardless of any signed policy and no one has ever said boo.
