Can Anyone Post A Copy Of Jack's "Hawaiian Elephant"?

Recommended Posts

This is a fascinating story of a painting Jack and Barbara Nicklaus wanted, in case some of you guys don't know of it already. The incident occurred forty years ago, in 1974. Here is a composite excerpt from his books My Story and On & Off The Fairway.

After a poor job defending the Crosby in awful weather the first week of the new year, I had decided not to compete again until the Los Angeles Open a month and a half later. However, both Barbara and I are great lovers of wildlife art, and particularly the work of two world-renowned artists who specialize in that field, the Englishman David Shepherd and the American Guy Coheleach. Shepherd was then offering to sell a wonderful painting of three elephants, and I was eager to own it.

The mistake I made was to mention this desire in a business group meeting, plus the price. The general consensus was: Forget it, you can't afford it. "Oh no?" I told the guys. "Well, just you watch." I had rarely played in the Hawaiian Open, but there was still time to enter. I hadn't intended to play in the Hawaiian Open that year, but we wanted the painting, so I said, "To heck with you guys, I'm going to win what it takes to get it." Fortunately, my game that week was as big as my mouth. I won by three strokes from Eddie Pearce, and still get pleasure every time I look at David's magnificent elephants hanging in our living room. I call the painting my "Hawaiian Elephant."

Attached is a picture of Jack hoisting the winner's check of $44,000, which at the was a large sum of money (I think you could buy a car that time for about $3000). A Google search of David Shepherd shows many beautiful pictures of elephants, but can anyone here post a copy of the exact painting Jack bought?

Can't help with the elephant pic, but I can tell you for certain that I bought a brand new 1972 Chevy Nova for $2996.00.
[/quote]

I had a brand new '74 Dodge Charger with a V8, vinyl roof and mag wheels that cost $3700, and a '76 Chevy Monte Carlo with swivel bucket seats, 350V8, landau vinyl roof and of course an 8 track in the dash that was $5800 out the door.

When the Ford Maverick came out in around '70, it was advertised at $1995. Of course, A/C was extra.

Sorry for the side step, but any '70's automotive references usually pull me off task.

Love the 70's car references. Would love a late 70's 911

My first car, a mid 80's Honda Civic 1500s hade a choke pull .. Just like today's golf carts

Got it used for 4800. Gas was 29 cents a litre. Interest rate was almost 15% on the loan

Young guys at my club have a hard time believing it

Is crack cheap where you guys are as well? This topic is all over the place...

Oddly enough, I think Grouville senior has a couple of little David Shepherd paintings somewhere. Not worth that sort of money by a long way.

My first car was a Honda Civic as well. 1976, so older than me. Gold.

Why are there rhinos in Vegas?! Spearmint ones? Will need this explaining to me. Is this slang for strippers?

My crack is the donut shop up the street and chocolate cream drops when you can find fresh ones this time of year.
Plain glazed is just under $6/dozen and the cream drops are about $3/pound.

Also, SoLos, Supersofts, and Duos. $20/dozen.

My apologies to EP for my contributions to getting off topic.

Let's all double up and see if we can come up with pics of Jack's elephants.

Yes. Golf isn't a fair comparison. I've heard you can quit crack.

And its cheap.

Saw a link to something elsewhere on GolfWRX where someone lists a collection of about 150 putters, the majority of which are Scotty Camerons. One comment below...

"Only a D*($less a hole would collect that many Cameron putters!"

Loving the interwebs...

My Dad bought a new base 1972 Dodge Polara for $3400. I bought a new 1976 Dodge Royal Monaco 2dr HT, nicely equipped for $5600 drive out. Hard to believe, I still have it. Never planned on keeping it 38 years.

I recall looking at 1980 Cadillacs. A new base model, drive out, cost $11,000. I recall the salesman telling me prices were going to skyrocket in a few years. He was right.

Can't help with Jack's Elephant.
