PW/52/58

Used to play PW/52/56/60, but had too many options for my feeble mind. Went back to 52/58 and my short game improved.
[/quote]

Wedge approach shots were my nemesis. I bought a laser range finder and replaced my dull grooved 54/60 with new 52/56/60 and took lessons on just pitching. I haven't quite got my chipping back to where it was (I did have a 3 month hiatus from golf).

I've turned approach shots into almost the best part of my game. Because I went from D/F/H/3-PW/54/60 to D/F/H/4-PW/52/56/60 I'm seriously questioning whether my game is better with three stock wedge shots over two.

3/4 Wedge Lengths
PW 75m
52 67m
56 56m
60 42m

As above my feeble mind has chipped well with four shots and I have been mixing it up with the 56 become less consistent now!
1. bump and run with 8i for half carry half run
2. level greenside chipping with 52 for some run
3. delicate or high spin chipping with 60
4. flop shot with 60
I change small things situation to situation, but I rely on the basics.

So is it worth having an extra wedge for approach shots only or would better gapping in the danger zone be better for a longer hitting 9 handicap amateur?

Been around the block a few times with wedges. Back in the old days of the 49-50* PW, never really gave it a thought. Standard SW and then added a 60* LW but it didn't get used much.

When I changed to a set with a 46* PW I tried the GW from the set and wasn't very consistent with it. So I picked up a Cobra Trusty Rusty set;
51, 55, 59. Got bored and went 53, 57, 61. Finally settled on the 51, 57. The magic on the Trusty's faded after a year or so

Fast forward....last few setups included;
After a short stint with a 52, 56, 60 in wedges I didn't like, I went to Vokey SM4 50, 56, 62....actually thought the lofts here were handy in that it gave each wedge a distinct purpose. GW...full or chips, 56...sand, 62 lobs.
The yardage gaps were harder to manage. I was going from 120 on the 50 to 95 on the SW...never used the 62 from anywhere other than the green side or deep bunkers. Honestly is was more trouble than it was worth.

Current set up 46 PW + SM5 50 54 58. Don't miss the 62 because the 58 is very versatile and it can be used out of the sand when I need to get up quick or for flops around the green. The 54 is a decent full shot 100 y club and works well for longer sand shots around the green. The 50 and 54 are good for chipping when I need more run. This gives me a 15 yard gap from 135 for PW to 90 for the LW. The less I play the more I appreciate the full shot options and the good gapping.

Not playing much these days and it shows. My HC has gone steadily down from about a 4.5 to something north of 10 because I just don't play as much. I've given up my Cobra Pro CB's 3-PW and am currently hunting for an iron set that fits my 'new' skill level. :fie: Truth be told if I could find the fairway again I'd probably be ok with my irons but the long irons are getting harder to hit, even off the tee.

Thinking about the Ping i25 irons and wedges. With the stronger lofts I'm thinking 4-U, and even considering going S and L in the i25's. Gapping would be
9i 41, W 45, U 49 S 54, L 58 (bent to 59). I'd even consider 41, 46, 52, 58 but really don't carry much at the top of the bag...D, 3W, 3H.
This would require me to have the i25 wedges or go with the Glides. Oh well...probably more info than the thread called for....so carry on. :read:

Last year was pw-gw-56-60. Buying new irons in a month or so. The set dont have a matching gw. The pw is 46. Debating for two weeks now if i'll go 52-58 or 50-54-58! And it makes me crazy! But at the end of the day, i always think 52-58 will be the winner. Less options, less decisions to make on the course. And now, wich wedge will go in my bag. It is between sm5, rtx 2.0 and j15 ( to match my j15 cb)!

52/58. I have room in the bag to go 52, 56, 60, but I can play the shots I'd use a 56/60 for with the 58 so there's no sense sticking an extra club in the bag just to have 14 total.

Currently have a stock 46 W in my i20s, and I have Vokey 52, 56, 60.

First time I've done four wedges and I think I'm sticking with it. I've done W-54-60 and found that I had a huge gap between the W and 54. Put a 52 in and found that I had a tough time with 70-80 yd pitch shots - too big a swing/too high a ball flight for the 60 and too much to take off the 52. Did 52-58, found that I was losing something in my flop shot and short game versatility. Used to have 4 iron and 2/3 hybrids, I've since gone to a 4H and 2H with a five degree gap between the two and added the 56. Boils down to what you use the most...I use multiple clubs when I chip, and I haven't missed the extra club in the top of my bag.

Can also use multiple combinations based on what kind of course you're playing...we play such a huge variety of course type and green design in VA that having options makes sense.

Good luck...this is as personal a question as blondes v. brunettes.

My 50* is the same length as my PW so I can get a little more out of it if necessary. I've never needed any more loft than an opened up 58* can give me.

Just ordered a 54 degree Mack Daddy 2....I'm a bit nervous as I've always played a 56 degree SW. My new PW is 46 degrees and that 10 degree gap is just too much (at least that's my line of thinking.)

I tried a 52 degree gap wedge, but I just never found myself hitting it much. Hopefully the 46-54-60 combo will be the sweet spot.
