So just reminding people on this thread that there's a Womens golf tournament going on as well.........

 

No there isn't. Not for another few days.

 

This thread is now for discussing BOTH the mens and the womens events, so the discussion is going on for both events. There were quite a few posts on the women's game already in the previous LPGA thread, and now there will be more on this thread from those that follow the women's game. Just saying......

 

In fairness, even in the original post there was talk about the men, and in posts that followed. Wait for the women to start and actually talk about them more than the men and a thread should have a chance in the other forum. I agree there should be one, and shouldn't have been merged.

Haha - Commentators said that the top players that didn't participate haven't been (aren't) missed...not at all. What a stupid comment! They would be better off never bringing them up, instead of saying what they said.

 

So you're watching Rose and Stenson go at it with a charge by Kuch in the background, and you're thinking, "Damn, if only Rory was here this would be interesting?"

 

Hell yes! The more top ranked players, the better. With the exception of a handful this 'event' is a very, very weak field. The players that did not participate are sorely missed - BIG TIME!!!

I'm sure this is posted some where in this thread, but missed it...what is the playoff format? There are no playoffs in the other individual Olympic events, that I'm aware of. Basketball has overtime. But if they share the gold, do the fix the finish coming in...?

No one in Brazil to play it, no one would want to travel to it to play it. Started from scratch for this.

The announcers are so bad. They keep going on about how powerful and what a big hitter Stenson is. Driving me crazy. He's not that long! They even called him Henson once or twice. Lol

The combination of lack of top-tier players and a visually uninteresting golf course (on TV at least) are really dragging this down. Couple that with the announcers dumbing down the commentary for a wider, less golf-knowledgable audience and I am fearful that this could be the last time golf is in the Olympics.

 

They should switch the format to match play. The Olympics is all about immediate stakes and a four day stroke-play tournament is just too much of a slow burn. I also think the lack of history at the golf course plays a big role. I'm sure there are some historic courses in Tokyo but I don't know them...it wouldn't be until at least 2024 that a course with a really strong existing history could be in play, and even that is only really if LA gets those Olympics (maybe to a lesser extent Paris or Rome). Would love to see Olympic golf played on a combo of LACC and Riv.
