Hey guys anyone hear that Troon is selling off Troon North? I know not the most popular course here, but any ideas on why they would be selling? And who wants to chip in to buy it?

They have trying to sell it a few years now a friend of mine who owns an upscale daily fee course mentioned this like five years ago but the catch is Troon still has to manage the facility. i can't recall what the figure was but it was a lot of money.

Playing southern dunes sat. In advance of the US Open qualifier 5/12. I expect it will be in great tournament shape in preparation for the qualifier.

Pretty sure that they want to get out of the ownership business and manage the facilities only. Troon North is definitely not hurting financially. Something that isn't widely known is that Troon also does maintenance for several high quality private courses that they don't do any management for i.e., not Troon Prìve Clubs.

Southern Dunes is really good right now. Was also really windy today so that was fun.

Played Ocotillo in Chandler on Tuesday.

 

Course conditions were fair, but some of the fairways were patchy, and some of the greens were in rough shape with small bare patches, and dark discolorations. Speeds were inconsistent.

I would say that I have been seeing a general decline in conditioning at Ocotillo over the past 2-3 years. Range balls are also now $5 extra, which makes sense I suppose for the prices they have been charging.

Anyone been out to Apache Stronghold recently? Saw another thread from earlier in the year, but nothing recently, and GN reviews mention it's winter/early spring shape was OK-ish, with the painted fairways and the like.

 

I know it's pretty knackered and the way it's run is a bit of a sh1tshow, but I reckoned I could get out there next Monday, the 16th and play 36 in 5 hours or so and not have it cost me too much. Thanks!

I haven't but I'd love to get out again. Saw that last review on here and I can't imagine that it's fallen off that much again, I'd say give it a go. With places starting to punch here locally I might go up there, though my wife is due with our 3rd any day now so I should probably stay close to home hah

Speaking of course maintenance. Could somebody provide a link so we can be aware of where and when courses have their maintenance scheduled. Greenskeeper.org used to be great for that, but lately their Arizona updates have been way behind the curve.

Or so someone with no known kids says. TBH, as long as the fairways are not mud and they put the pins where there is grass, it'll make for a nice golf-related field trip!

I don't think you can go wrong with Apache Stronghold even in poor conditions. I'll be out there in a month and I can't wait!

Anywho know of a decent course to play for $20 bucks? I'm looking in the Mesa area. So far Arizona Golf Resort is the top pick. I've never played it but have heard it isn't great. But for $20 bucks who could complain? Any other recommendations?

Camelback Ambiente yesterday, course from tee to green in good shape, greens rolled smooth. good layout on the front, lots of repetitive looking holes on the back....ymmv

South Mesa, but Toka Sticks is an easy course $30 before noon, $20 after. Doesn't play too bad, nice staff and simple course. Played today and looks like they are continuing to reshape a couple greens to add some intrigue.

You can walk Dobson after 1 for 18 bucks....it does get busy out there though....

Southern Dunes today pretty pure in preparation for the US Open qualifier next week. Sounds like they might be firming it up for the summer too which is great news.

Estrella yesterday, everything was great. My first time there, such a fun course. Greens were fast fairways were great, some sand was a little chunky but probably due to the rain night before. Next week should be great for the WRX match, wish I could join.

 

Oh and ask the starter about the mini tornado that took their notes and yardage books flying across the mountain :)

It was $129 last year. It was $99 the year before when it was only 9 holes....They changed to the domestic beer 2 summers ago in the middle. That only applies to from the cart though. They have always allowed any draft when in the restaurant (of course they could change that).
