I hate snipe programs. I wish ebay would do what Gunbroker does. They have a 15 minute rule. If a bid is received in the last 15 minutes of the auction, the auction is extended another 15 minutes. That way, nobody can snipe you and it truly becomes an auction.

What is sniping?

Auction sniping

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Auction sniping is the process of watching a timed online auction (such as on eBay or Yahoo!), and placing a winning bid at the last possible moment (often seconds before the end of the auction), giving the other bidders no time to outbid the sniper. Some bidders do this manually, and others use software designed for the purpose. A bid sniper is a person or software agent who performs auction sniping.

Good idea... good for sellers, not for bidders, though.

Try 'em all. There's so much sniping sites/software out there and most give you 3-5 free snipes.

I used Auctionsniper and their free snipes. It was easy to use and worked for some of the clubs I bought...

I'm currently using the free snipes from EZ Sniper...works pretty well, too.

Google it, though. I was surprised to see how many sites there actually were...Auctionsniper, EZ Sniper, Bidnapper, Auctionstealer, EZBidnapper, EZBidstealer, EZAuctionbidnapperstealer.....

WithOUT sniping programs it's far too easy to get into a mano-a-mano p*ssing contest. I bid, then you bid, then Bill, then Jerry and we just keep raising one another's bids until we've driven the price way out of range and somebody gets STUCK at the end. The only guy who wins then is the seller!

I'm NEVER unhappy with the results of a sniping program. I either get the tiem, or I don't. Either way I didn't spend one penny more than I was willing to spend and I can put a snipe in 9 days early and forget about it. If I win- fine. If I don't win fine.

8 times out of 10 I'll win. The other day I was willing to pay $130 for a refinished, used putter. I thought that was MORE than fair. 4 or 5 days before the auction ended it was at $41 and I entered a snipe of $130. In the final 15 seconds of the auction it went from $50 to $132.50. Somebody was willing to pay $2.50 more than I was but I left feeling good. $130 was TOP DOLLAR for me for that item. I'd have been much happier at $100 or so. So... I didn't win, but I didn't pay too much either. And best of all- I didn't get into that proverbial p*ssing contest with a couple of other guys and just keep driving the price higher and higher.

At least that's how I see it.

Not sure I see the difference between doing this and just putting $130 in as your max bid on Ebay directly? Bottom line is you would still only have $130 as your top dollar.

eBay is all about price discovery both for buyers and ultimately the seller. By putting up your max bid early, you are allowing other bidders to discover your bid, reducing your chances of winning. You may walk away happy having seen the item sell to someone else for more than you were willing to pay, but had you sniped with that same max price you would have an advantage IMO.

It's still a pissing contest , your just not present for it. Have a little self control and bid what your willing to pay. BTW there is nothing wrong with the seller getting top dollar for something.

You may walk away happy having seen the item sell to someone else for more than you were willing to pay, but had you sniped with that same max price you would have an advantage IMO.

That's very well described. And I'm surprised there is debate toward optimum strategy. By bidding early you become the target. One or many bidders naturally fish toward your price. Minus your already established bid they may think they only want to go to $30, or whatever, on that item, but if the $30 is not getting them over the top they go further, frustrated at having already expended time and energy.

If you are waiting in the background it encourages a scenario in which the rest of the field is planning a super steal in the $20 range. They see a leading bid of let's say $16.50 and think they'll get cute with $20.50. Even if their instinct is the item is worth $30+, and they initially planned to bid that high, the fact that it is sitting there at $16.50 late in the game causes hesitancy and self doubt.

And that's exactly what you want as a sniper, an item sitting far below it's true worth. Then you jump in at the last second with a much higher bid that still equates to value, even if it takes every last penny to win the auction. But in many cases you'll win it far below your high water mark. By bidding your max early, even if you win the item chances are it will be closer to your high number than if you had waited.

The key obviously, is to handicap correctly and place that max bid where it needs to be. Bidding late also allows you to incorporate and evaluate all the new variables, including recently listed similar items. That's why I don't like automated sniping. It's like a lazy crutch. It reminds me of guys in Las Vegas who say, "Bet Miami for me at -6.5 or better." Sounds swell at the time. But then you take -6.5 and suddenly there's a key injury, or merely an off Strip sportsbook that has seem some atypical betting on that game and is down to -5.5

No thank you. I'll manually wait until the final seconds and spring.

I've used auction sentry for years. Some sniping programs require you to put your passwords on an online server. I dont' feel comfortable with that.

Auction sentry also tracks auctions that you are selling and keeps track of profits, etc...\\

One thing to know...if you buy the deluxe...you have to pay for it every year. If you buy the regular like I did, lifetime updates and usage.

Edited to add. It looks like you can only buy the deluxe now. That makes this not as good of a deal IMO.

Sellers complain about sniping and some people pull ads if there hasn't been sufficient action before the last day. But the reality is that someone will bid on it, unless your price is too high.

The only negative to sniping is that you have to be willing to bet your max, as you won't get a second chance to win. But it also gives you the dicipline to set your price and walk away from it.

I used to snipe all the time when I wasn't sitting at the computer all day. Now, I bid a lot, but snipe anytime that I might be in a meeting or absolutely know I want to put a bid on something.
