Hammer, I don't like the shafts in my wedges. Give me options.

Me either, the SM5 wedge flex shafts feel much softer then the SM4 wedge flex shafts, I feel like I'm losing distance maybe.

A great wedge shaft is the S400. It's basically an S300 that's heavier. They not too stiff which is good because your not going all out with wedges anyway. Other options are the Nippon Modus Wedge 125, if you want something "lower launch" nippon WV 125. All that being said, you can't go wrong with S400's.

Edit: MC, I forgot you have PX in your irons. You have 6.0's correct, those would be nice in wedges too. You could go 6.0 in you gap wedge and 56.

Also if you carry a 60 you could put a 5.5 in that.

Lastly, I think Vokey stock wedge flex shaft is basically an S200. They're good shafts, but they were too light for me.

+1 on s400, and you're right that stock is s200.

Also another option for the 60 (if you play one and want to stick with PX) is to use an 8 iron shaft. This will keep the weight up v. the 5.5 and make it play a tad softer.

This talk of being in the right (or wrong) place, vehicles and such, conjured this up in my mind. Laying down a Gumbo Groove:

"I been in the right place

But it must have been the wrong time

I'd of said the right thing

But I must have used the wrong line

I been in the right trip

But I must have used the wrong car

My head was in a bad place

And I'm wondering what it's good for

I been in the right place

But it must have been the wrong time

My head was in a place

But I'm having such a good time"

I had s400's in a set of Callaway Jaws wedges I had a couple summers back, I did like those. Even the S300's that are in my irons wouldn't be bad either probably, Its just weird because I never found my sm4 shafts squishy before and it should be the same shaft as the sm5 isn't it??

PD, the shaft racks were put back up behind the counters today, the sale must be over :(

IIRC, if you want less spin that would require a more tip stiff shaft. If you're not used to them, they'll feel like rebar. The guy to ask about shafts would be Stu and Hammer. Hammer has been doing his research lately on shafts.

The other thing is your swing. What spins for you may not spin for me.

Hope this confuses the crap out of ya. :) Didn't intend that a way.

Dead on it what spins for you may not spin for me and visa versa. On shafts it depends on the weight of the club head and how the shaft tips out. Also any bore through club tends to be stiffer on the tip than a blind bore. Never go by what a shaft says it is because it can be off especially if it is a used pull out. A frequency tuner will tell the story. I do pretty good using an old school deflection board and by mocking up a club and checking the flex and reaction by feel

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemaen. My Px are flighted. I've heard this means 5.5 in the long, 6.0 in the mid, and 6.5 in the short irons. I may try to find a 6.0 flighted wedge shaft for my gap. The 58*? I wanted to try an 8i shaft, the ol make your own spinner shaft but, not sure what flex. I read to go stronger but I don't remember why. Might have to do with weight. The 5.5 makes more sense because I don't swing my 58* full. All I know is I have a hard time fighting them down. Thought I was possibly flipping but I can flight the mp68 PW down.

I used to peel potatoes with my Macs.

Actually, from what I remember the soles had a slight radius. If you set one down on a hardwood floor you would see the leading edge a little raised off the floor. Really not that unforgiving..

A question for the gallery. If I were to ask you for a 'smooth' driver shaft (mid-high launch) that produces moderate amounts of spin what would you suggest?

Everything is set in my bag but I'm tinkering with the ball-flight of my driver. I think I've got the head figured out but am not sold on the shaft(s) that I currently own.

The Speeder565 shaft in my BBA driver sounds similar to what your describing, but then again I could be way off too lol. I do not know much about shafts really :)

Here's where I'm at right now Pigs.

Matrix (Radix, X-Con5, White Tie, Rul), Aldila (DVS, NVS, VS-Proto), UST (VTS Silver, Red, Elements Wind), Graphite Design (Pershing).

Essentially, I'm a real 'Nowhere Man'

Not wanting this to sound like a Club Tech section posting, some thoughts PD. You didn't mention a price point so sort of winging it. And I have a built-in bias towards shafts that are several versions old. Not convinced that the "newest" is significantly better to warrant full retail. A major concern for me with buying a pull is ascertaining whether there has been any tip trimming (without knowing a tip to graphic measurement). The last proviso, shafts are as individualistic as grips. What works for one, may not for another. So take this with however many grains of salt you choose. With all that said:

Graphite Design YS 6+. Mid 60's weight, Mid high launch. Moderate torque. Have this shaft in a 983K driver. Loads nicely with my modest swing speed. excellent trajectory. I'm a natural high ball hitter, so look for shafts that bring flight down a bit. This combo accomplished that. A really solid offering that has been around for awhile. May feel a bit soft to flex, especially if your an aggressive swinger. Yeah, I've gone backwards, playing a small(er) head driver. Seems as though I can square it better thru impact than a 460 cc. My mini.

Grafalloy Prolaunch Platinum. PL has been mentioned, Blue and Red. Been a big fan of PL shafts over the years. Had the Blue in a SE driver and 3W heads that were in use for awhile. Definitely a high launcher, a real spinner, to much so for me. No experience with the Red, but reportedly can be a handful in getting the ball up. The Platinum model (Axis is the newer version, but somewhat difficult to find) slots in between the other two as far as bend characteristics. Mid-weight and torque, described as mid/high launch. I use this shaft in my V-Steel fairways, therefore opinion is somewhat based on that application. Have no difficulty getting the ball up and away, without ballooning. Excellent trajectory IMO. Feel that it plays true to flex. This shaft could be a viable candidate. Especially if you're looking for a low cost option to try. Can be found for < $30 from DTG. Speaking of Grafalloy, if you ever run across an Epic, buy it. It an oldy, but a great shaft. High launch but low spin shaft (seems counter intuitive). Was a bomber. Had one in a SE 675D (?) head that I should have switched out before selling the club. Hard to find today. Not that it has any performance virtues, the best looking shaft evah.

Axe Xcaliber RT 6 (or 6+). From the designer of the ProLite and PL when he was with Grafalloy. Installed one of these ( the 6 version) in a bud's G20, he was ballooning the stock shaft. He loves it. Brought his ball flight down, rather significantly. He's a big swinger, says he never feels like he's over-loading the shaft. The 6+ is the model that best meets your criteria for weight and launch. Never read anything negative about the Axe shafts. Good performer and value. I've tried it several times (yes, we let one another try our clubs) and it had the launch characteristics per preference. Just to stout for me as he plays S. Somewhat under the radar and only available thru Golfworks (as far as I know).

UST Pro Force V2 - 65. Never had direct experience swinging this shaft. But it meets your criteria for a mid-weight, mid-high launch shaft. IIRC, Big Stu uses the V2 in several of his sticks. Maybe he will see this and offer opinion.

Or just pony up the $$ and get yourself a GD Tour AD DI bad boy. Anything that expensive has to be good. Right? A few thoughts FWIW.

That YS-6+ was a popular setup on a 983K at one time it was the hot set up around here.

Now the Pro Force V-2 and the Pro Force 65 gold are two different animals. The V-2 does not have as stiff of a tip as a old 65 does. Look at an old 65 it has thicker walls than any other shaft that is where the get the weight and stiffness from. As I am getting a little older and swinging a little slower I am having to get away from those shafts. My new driver a Titleist 915 D-2 has a Diamana 60 regular in it and I hit it good. My old Adams GT 5 wood has a stock Adams shaft marked "stiff" but when put on the frequency machine the numbers come out to a little stiff regular. Like I have said never ever believe what a shaft says it is. The only 2 woods I am hitting the old 65 in now is the 7&9 woods and I think thy are getting a little firm at that and I may have to change them out in the near future.

I do have a 905 with a V-2 in it that I found in the same haul as the Newport.. It hits a little stiff for me and I have to jump on it to hit it. I have no idea how it is tipped in fact I have never had it on my buddy's tuner but it would be naturally stiffed any how being a bore through

Stu, what do you know about putting an 8i shaft in a wedge? It's supposed to lower trajectory a tad and possibly spin more.

That is known as "Tiger Stepping" because supposedly he was the first one to do it. Again as far as trajectory goes it depends on a bunch of factors. Your angle of attack the weight and characteristic of the head all play into it. My buddy the Miura dealer turn me on to it a couple of years ago he took my old 588s and soft stepped a set of Sensicore shafts in them and man do I hit them high and spin the crap out of them but then again I tend to come in steep on my 56 and 60 wedges and use a lot of hand action. I also have my wedges taped up to about D-6 or so. Now the one wedge I can do the low one hopper with is my old Vokey 52 with a Rifle stepless in it. I do not carry it often but did Saturday because of the wind and two short par 3 holes that my PW is too much for and the 56 is not enough. That is one department you really have to fine tune on. For me to hit a lower trajectory I need a stiff shaft tipped stiff like a S-400. Shaft weight does not mean a lot to me because I have to have a heavy head to feel what I need to do with it. Wedge tuning is a whole different ball game. I love wedges and experimenting with them with different grinds weights and bounces

Thank you for all of the shaft suggestions gents. I have 10 of those shafts saved in my eBay 'watch list' at the moment. I'm going to continue to narrow my focus in the next few weeks. This will give me time to experiment with the Graphite Design G-Tech shafts. I want to fart around with tip trimming and shaft length. I've played regular flex shafts forever (and I know that all regulars are not created equal) and think I need to explore firm/stiff flex shafts. Still on the fence with the profile I'm looking for.

An interesting point of note, I sent my 9* R11s to Continental Golf for a fresh paint job. I had them check the head specs and the loft was measured at 9.5* with a 1* open club face. Right in my wheelhouse at the moment (especially given the fact that the head is a little higher spinning).

I'll post pics when the head arrives. Should be a beauty as I'm looking to finish the crown in an eggshell gloss black and I'm having the black anodized finish removed and a satin steel finish applied.

Raddo,

I think you are going to be shocked at how 'forgiving' the Macs are. Definitely a higher launch than I thought I was going to see. Toe hits feel like poop (which is fine because my miss is near the heel - hello Mr. Shankapotomus : ) but they feel like poop with ever club. My yardages haven't changed much (if anything the Macs are a wee bit longer) and the feel at impact is hard to describe. Yesterday I nutted a few shots and it almost felt like there was no feel. The ball seems to spend zero time on the face.

Pigs,

Not sure about the Hogans but wanted to thank you for checking out your local GT for shafts. I'll take a trip to mine later in the week. Fellaheen and I are on the same cost page as I'd love to save some coin. I do like his Axe suggestion (as I have Excaliber fairways and hybrid shafts already) but even they have climbed in price this year.

My 2 cents on shafts... I agree with Fellaheen on the PL Platinum, the Axis version of that line feels pretty smooth (I have a couple PL Blues). Also, agree with Hammer on the Diamana shafts. One way to save some $ is to find a 'Made for Titleist' version. I know the 'Made for' shafts are scoffed at for being watered down, but I put a MFT Kai'li in a Rapture last season and it was a great performer.

But, then again... I probably shouldn't be giving recommendations on golf equipment because I hit the same distances and shoot the same score no matter what I play.

I remember when I got the Macs. I was living in Cali on travel, and my hotel was near an Edwin Watts. So I went in, knelt down and did homage, and started snooping around. After a while the rep comes up and we talk, and he hands me a VIP 7i. I get in the net (they didn't have simulators back then), and proceed to pure one after another. Did the same with the 4i. I remember the solid head heavy feel at contact. You can't rush these babies unless you have a big core and popeye forearms.

I loved the Macs, played some good golf with them, although at that time I wasn't playing that much. Then, I moved back to Jersey, and, um....I hoed. One day my lusting eyes wandered over to a sexy set of Mac MT Pro MBs, and well, I'm not proud of my past. Then, to make matters worse, I betrayed my second mistress for a set of W/S Tour blades. Sorry, but I really stepped in sh!t finding these, totally off the radar. The cleanest look at address I have ever seen. The feel from a well struck shot is more 'immediate' if that makes sense, while the Macs were a bit more muted. They feel very similar to MB712s I have hit. The Staffs have just become family, and so I had to let the Macs go, out of respect...

Active brag alert!

I made my first eagle of the new season today. Short par 5. 450 Yds. Uphill into a cold East wind. Hit my best drive of the day to the 200 marker. Too much uphill and into the wind to get my 4 iron there. Can’t hit a hybrid worth a darn. Choked down on the 3wood and hit a nice low bunt draw that ran up onto the front of the green. Made the 25 footer for the 3. Ten hole carry over!!! So rare for me to hit three almost perfect shots in a row.

Cleaned up in the skins game and had to buy the drinks. Posting is open for the season. Trending down :)
