It will be a while before I get to see how this works in action during game play.  Not sure that it's going to make much difference at my home course unless I'm out in the weeds, but it should be helpful on courses that I don't play on a regular basis.  If nothing else it will speed up the decision making process.

 

I seem to have gotten on a real tech kick since the pandemic started.  First with a new laptop and portable harddrive then followed up with a Bluetooth outdoor speaker, then wireless headphones and now a golf GPS.  I must admit that I'm impressed with how well all of these devices work.  Pretty much foolproof once you figure out how to use them.

 

You're going to like the GPS device.  Have had the Garmin G10 version for several years now.  Clip it to my belt.  A quick glance gives me distance to center, which is the distance I focus on.  No uncasing and sighting like a rangefinder.  And it's accurate, +/- a couple yards when I've verified it against a laser.  Close enough for my purposes.  Will also tell me distance to a hazard, but requires manipulation to pull up that feature, don't use that function all that much.  From greater than 150, can usually eyeball the club that's needed for the shot.  But closer in, knowing the yardage assists with determining whether I want to hit a 9i vs. 8i.  Amongst other factors.  And for unfamiliar courses, a valuable tool.  

 

Many of the buds do not have a yardage device.  I get chosen to play with them because I have the  "gizmo".  Makes me feel wanted.

The other advantage I see with a GPS is that it gives the number to the middle and I wouldn't get suckered into shooting for the flag every time. Middle of the green is my usual strategy on a hole unless I've got a wedge in hand and fell its a safe flag to attack. 

I have a sureshot GPS, you load the course from the net and it gives you a schematic of each individual hole with details of the last stroke distance and distance to the center of the green you are playing. Excellent accuracy.

Yeah, a journey.  Will always remain one.  I'll never be good at the game; but good enough.  To find satisfaction in the well struck shot.  The occasional birdie made.  The futzing around with different implements for no particular reason other than it brings enjoyment.  The rounds played with the group.  The final tally on the day really not the raison d'être why we gather once a week.  The pleasure found in the solitary round, no conversations going on other than that in my mind.  While attempting to execute quality golf shots.  If not, dropping a ball and trying again.  Hoping to improve just a little, my form of practice.  But not dedicated enough to undertake the process of meaningful improvement.  That entails a significant amount of time, expenditures, practice and commitment beyond what I'm willing to invest.  And can become a slippery slope if not careful.  So muddle along, doing what I do.  As best I can.

 

The fun to be found (some days better than others), is not in the results.  It's in the trying.  Always with  optimism that the next time out is when it all comes together.  I'm a golfer for better or worse.

@scotee  As a retired state trooper I sincerely thank you for you handling this driving situation with your dad. I was brought into several of these family "discussions" about taking the keys away from mom or dad. Being a part of taking away their independence and freedom is a difficult decision, at best. In a word, it "sucks". And rarely is there a positive outcome afterward. Either a seasoned parent has either been involved in a crash or a close call, or they displayed signs of early mental retraction, as in a lapse of situational awareness for a second or two. In almost every case the kids have no desire to intervene for the best interest of their parent and/or John Q public, as most reluctantly admit they are afraid of being taken out of the will and lose their inheritance. Thanks for being one of the few who do the right thing.

Usually with me, if it is the first stroke from the first tee, I go home and reflect on the glory of a successful day. Don't care what happens after that, my brain is saturated with happy thoughts.🤪🤪🤪🤪

Absolutely.  Vividly remember the great shots.  From several years back.  The "nutted" 3 wood on a ~190 Par 3. Over water and traps guarding the front of the green.  The sensation in my hands and arms of the perfect strike.  Watching the laser straight ball flight, to 4' below the pin (not realizing how close until arriving at the green).  Then fighting off the "grips" and making the putt.  So this is how you do it?

One of my best would be a birdie on my problem par three hole. Struck a terrible tee shot left around 50ft to the pin, second shot a chip hit the pin and dropped in for a birdie.

 

This was one of my 5am starts with my son before he went to work so it took a little time to register.

It always amazes me how, when I rmember back to courses I played I think "that was the course I hit that six iron" or "that was where I made that putt". 

 

I don't remember courses but the layout, it's either the memorable shots I hit there or more usually some moment on the course shared with my playing partners.

 

One of my most fondest from recently was playing in the Ryder Open at Lindrick two years ago. 

The Ryder Open is an open tournament Lindrick GC have been hosting since 1957 when they held the Ryder Cup. It is a 2 man competition over 18 holes where the first six holes are played as foursomes, the second six holes better ball and the final six, individual scores both balls to count. 

 

It's a great tournament that we were lucky to get accepted into and be a part of, and the one event my wife and I have played that we intend to play every year as the atmosphere is so enjoyable and friendly.

 

What made our visit so special was the company we had for the round. James was a new member to Lindrick, having only joined two weeks before so was as lost on the course as we were. The other was a gentleman by the name of Martin Haddock. Martin was a superb golfer who as one of his claims to fame was to beat Matthew Fitzpatrick in his last ever amateur match (https://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/golf/usopen/10893879/US-Open-2014-Matt-Fitzpatrick-ready-to-join-the-big-time.html)

 

Martin had also played in the Open championship as an amateur and told a great story of when he went to warm up on day 1 he asked his friend and caddy to get to the far end of the range away from everyone while he picked up his balls. He said he walked own the range looking for his caddy at the end but couldn't see him. He then spotted his caddy in the middle of the range. Dumbfounded at why his caddy would do this he then noticed to his horror the players either side of him where Faldo and Nicklaus. He then told me how he hit nothing but wedges for 20 mins until he felt confident to hit something harder. He was an awesome guy and super down to earth and my wife was amazed when after the round the Lindrick Pro told us Martins handicap hadn't gone above Scratch since 1983. That's as long as I've been alive. My most memorable moment on that round was playing the 15th and on the green and I suddenly look around at this beautiful scenery, the great company and think how lucky I was to be there at that moment, with those people. The golf was truly secondary that day.

 

Seeing your name on a leaderboard is always exciting. 

 

Superb opening hole.

 

 

We thoroughly enjoyed having a beer and chatting with about a dozen other participants after the competition, with this view as our backdrop.

I am a range finder person. While I understand the benefits of a GPS, I find the range finder simpler, i.e., nothing to charge, it always works, etc. The only downside is my hands are a bit shakey, so sometimes I can’t pick up the yardage.

Except that one time for me mid tournament when the battery died and I played the last 6 holes eyeballing my yardages.

out on the course. Sometimes they're close and sometimes they will differ by 2-3 clubs because

of the size and shape of the greens. Frankly, I just trust the rangefinder more and really like

the slope adjustment feature. 

 

My rangefinder is not a top of the line one so, like Sean, I sometimes have a hard time locking

onto the flag. I always thought I had steady hands until I got this rangefinder, lol. Shooting a pin

from long distance with trees or other objects in the background can be dicey I will admit and

of course, if you can't see the pin from where your ball is you're gonna have to improvise to get

a number.

I haven't driven since October of 2017, due to the Lord's intervention in my life is the best way to put it. I have epilepsy, but have driven all my life problem free due to terrific control from the meds that I take... until that October afternoon. Leaving work I had a seizure while driving and hit the back of a box truck at 50 mph. No one got hurt including me. They did tell me I would have to wait 6 months to get my license back, including my neurologist, and my state trooper son-in-law, who along with the rest of my family didn't really like the idea of my driving. But my chief CEO, that is, my DW, said I shouldn't drive any more at all, suggesting that there could have been kids for example in any of the many cars all around, as there was crowded traffic. I say all that to say this, not many people driving have epilepsy, and not all seniors driving should give up their driving rights. But there comes a time when people in a position who may compromise their own safety, or the safety of others due to refusing to acknowledge that some condition they may find themselves in, need to seriously revisit and reconsider their position, before a tragedy occurs. I freely gave up my right to drive after that, and have not had one moment of regret. And I was only 66 at the time. I am attaching the only pic of the car I can find right now, seat belts and air bags do work by the way, or I wouldn't be writing this... So, I would urge you to make a pact with yourself now, that you will make the right decision and know when the time comes, medically, or age wise, to stop driving, so that one of your loved ones doesn't have to go through the difficulties of convincing you, or worse yet, you don't hurt yourself, or someone else...

 

My new car, a wake-up call...

You know how fortunate you are to have survived that. Sadly there are those who don't. Seat belts and airbags do work and work well if used properly. It's a rare cat who will do what you've done and I commend you and your family in the decision.

I have an old black and white G2 watch that I hang on the handle of my golf bag. I've also used a laser for the past 18 years or so and have recently received a new Leupold. I use the old watch because all I want from it is the front, center, and back of the green and to occasionally measure the length of a shot. I depend on the laser for more information like distance to pin and to clear a bunker or distance to end of fairway. I find the laser more useful on new courses. And yes, if I can't see the pin, I just use the COG number I get from the watch and have at it. I like to use them both and it honestly takes no more time to do so than to use either. I get the number from the watch as I select a club from the bag and use the laser if I need more information.

When my father-in-law was told he could no longer drive he went ballistic. Driving privileges have to be a very difficult thing to relinquish. 

 

My son's girlfriend has epilepsy and can't drive until she goes two years without a seizure. 

 

My mother is 90 and still drives, but she is very fit. The only mar on her record is a speeding ticket she got a couple of years ago. It happened on the highway and she said she wanted to blow the carbon out of the carburetor as she doesn't do much highway driving, lol.

The depth of genuine sharing in the Grille has never ceased to amaze me.   Aging, even passing family members.  Coping with it with such class.  Sharing the joys of living to the fullest while we can.  How you gents put words to the almost indescribable journey of golf is mind blowing.

 

When I read these posts I see such images in my mind's eye.  

 

Like Radro, I struggle to steady my range finder hands enough to hit the pin from a distance.  Things I've tried would make a comedy sketch.  Pinned me and it to the uprights of the golf cart roof.  Tried fixing elbows to the steering wheel while holding my breath.  Those contortions aside I've wrapped a leg around a hugged tree.  The bended knee firing stance.  

 

So the infamous gps golf watch eventually became my go-to.  Looking less silly out there.   (Until I hit the ball!)

Yep I have had times in the past when I was sick or fatigued and flat refused to drive a truck--- Recently a couple of years ago. Had been getting it on for a month hard. Broke down one night got back real late and the company wanted me to do a turn around and to do it I had only about 2 hrs sleep. I flat refused to do it. Ops manager was insisting and I quit on the spot. Told him when I got up my next phone call would be to the State Transport Police. The owner of the company called me 3 times while I was asleep. I knew he would because I was in the right. No way I was going to risk killing someone else or myself for their crap. It blew over and I was never challenged again

LOL sounds like most of the Moped operators down here---- No drivers license down here does not mean squat. Here at the beach about 75% of these clowns have their license suspended anyhow due to DUI. No problem drive a car anyhow. Also in SC you can have your regular License suspended for DUI or whatever and still get a Moped license. The only thing they cracked down on Moped wise is now you have to have a metal state issued license tag like on a motorcycle except it says MP on the prefix. Not sure on required insurance on a Moped. Golf Carts on public roads have regulations too. You have to have the Golf Cart sticker and carry insurance.

Yep I have had times in the past when I was sick or fatigued and flat refused to drive a truck--- Recently a couple of years ago. Had been getting it on for a month hard. Broke down one night got back real late and the company wanted me to do a turn around and to do it I had only about 2 hrs sleep. I flat refused to do it. Ops manager was insisting and I quit on the spot. Told him when I got up my next phone call would be to the State Transport Police. The owner of the company called me 3 times while I was asleep. I knew he would because I was in the right. No way I was going to risk killing someone else or myself for their crap. It blew over and I was never challenged again

 

Unfortunately,  most companies have only one motive, their big god profit.  Your safety is irrelevant because no matter how good you are at the job, they always think you are expendable.

My son's girlfriend has epilepsy and can't drive until she goes two years without a seizure. 

 

My mother is 90 and still drives, but she is very fit. The only mar on her record is a speeding ticket she got a couple of years ago. It happened on the highway and she said she wanted to blow the carbon out of the carburetor as she doesn't do much highway driving, lol. 

 

Ha. Ha.  Used that line once, BITD when pulled over for speeding.  It worked!  Only received a warning to "cool it".  Probably not nowadays......What's a carburetor?

 

And for some strange reason upon reading your posting, can't get this tune out of my head.

Yes, I'm quite fortunate that it was a box truck that I hit and not some other vehicle, due to the frame of the rear end. It sent most of my car's damage down rather than up. Plus the engine on a Fusion, probably as on many other cars is designed to drop down on such a collision rather than go up or back toward the driver. 

 

I was totally out during this event as I indicated, and afterward. I always try to find something comical in everything, and of course this was no exception. Apparently someone had walked me off the 4-lane, and set me down in the grass off of the highway as I still hadn't come to. The squad (not the political one) showed up and was checking me out. The lanes behind my car were stopped for about a mile, and it was rush hour. Someone from my office had gotten out to tell them they knew me and suggested seizure to them. I finally started to speak but didn't know what happened, saw the cars and said "wow, look at all the cars, someone has had an accident". One of the guys said, "yeah it was you partner, we're gonna take you and have you checked out". So I said "Me? why me?, I've gotta get home" and he said "I don't think we're gonna let you do that, see that car over there, that's yours". Well, I couldn't see my car too well at the time through everybody and didn't know it was damaged, but they said it was, so I asked if I could call my wife. My phone was still in the car, so they went over and found it for me and I called her (they had already contacted her somehow) and I told her I was in a fender bender and to meet me at the hospital. So they put me in the squad. As we rode down a country road, we went past hundreds of trees that the sun was shining through so the on/off fast sunlight looked like a disco ball inside the squad. I remember saying "wow, you guys have a disco ball in here, that's really crazy", and one of the guys said, "no, that's just the sun flashing through all of the trees. When we finally got to the hospital, (I was feeling pretty normal by then) my dear wife was there to meet the squad, and I said to her "hey, how's it goin'?"... I could hear the squad guys tell her as they were rolling me out that they didn't see anything wrong with me but it appeared that I had a seizure. She said "I can tell you he's going to be OK. She wanted to know more about the accident and if anyone was hurt or just what happened. The trooper who came to the accident, came to the emergency room later where I was. He had stayed and cleared out the scene before he came. He said I would have to go 6 months seizure free before I could drive again, and I said well, my boss here has already said I could never drive again, so I guess that settles it... 😉

 

We didn't tell the trooper but he reported to our son-in-law who is now a lieutenant in the OSHP...

Which is short-sighted, because frankly good help is hard to find.
