For the life of me I can't remember the name of the amateur. He played in The Concession Cup at the Concession GC this year here in my hometown in Sarasota. I was a hole marshall for his group, although he didn't win( tough place to make putts) he has a great game. His game is somewhat boring, he just makes it look easy. Steady Eddie.

Edit, his name is James Bunch.

I have planned a week of golf in Dornoch...Brora, Tain, Golspie, and yes, Royal Dornoch....

About Brora:

Is there much lost besides yardage when playing from short tees? I'm a sub-6k yard bogie golfer and typically play 5500 to 6k yard tees...and it's likely that the red tees are more my length...

By "much lost" I'm referring to the nature or character of the course....I would not like facing forced carries beyond my typical drive's carry of 175-190 yards and par-3s where I would need to use a driver.

Thanks for replies and advice...all appreciated.

Generally the same lines off the red tees . Will be less carry to the fairways . They are designed for your kind of length off the tee

I've played all the ones you mention , beautiful part of the world . Add castle Stuart and Nairn to your list if you won't return again , worth it

Too much golf to play...too little time....

I just booked Pitlochry in place of Boat of Garten....tough choice, but the mountain air will be a nice "breather" from the links. Playing from short tees THERE won't matter in terms of the tough game, and walk, required there.

Fairly mundane looking course. Waaaaay better in Scotland if you step OFF the tourist track.

In my top 10 Scottish courses and I've played every top one except muirfield , where do you recomend ?

Which course are you referring to ("fairly mundane")?

Thought I'd add a couple of Brora pix...loved this course....if you go you must remember to keep you ball left of center off the tee on most holes.

My advice, if you happen to have a golf ball land anywhere near the south end of a cow is to wait until the cow has moved on to retrieve it. I have video somewhere of a guy in our group sauntering up to get his ball and right as he was reaching for it the cow took an urge to "eliminate". It was hilarious. He decided to just drop another ball (after toweling off his trousers).

Myself and two other ares staying in Inverness May 28th then heading to St. Andrews Tuesday 30th. I was thinking of playing Brora in the am then Royal Dornoch that evening. I originally intended to play Castle Stuart either the evening of May 28th or Tuesday May 29th. However, we start the lottery for the Old Course that Tuesday.

My question is the route from Inverness back to St. Andrews. I have played Gleneagles before. Is Castle Stuart a must play up there or do we need to hit Narin?

Thanks,

Can you just rock up to Brora or do you need to book in advance?

Too general of a question. You "rocking up" at 4 in the afternoon in late July or early August? At 10 a.m. in May? Showing up the day of a comp?

Only a guess based on looking at their tee sheet when we were there, but it seemed to be pretty available. We didn't have any trouble booking an additional weekday round at Royal Dornoch the week we were there, no idea what the chances of that would be in the height of the busy season.

When we were there last summer, we didn't make a tee time for Brora until a couple of days before we played it, no trouble getting a time at all, and were offered the replay rate discount generously applied to the next day when we expressed interest in playing again and the sheet was pretty wide open that morning. We were there and played right the week after Father's Day. Didn't seem too busy at all and that was nice.

Again, just our experience, but I'd think your chances would be pretty good, but wouldn't gamble not being a able to play just because I didn't call ahead.

Fair enough. Going to Scotland on a general trip in May and planning to drop in for a round at Brora probably one afternoon around 3 or 4 on our way back to Dornoch from the Orkneys.. Plenty of light so I would not expect much difficulty getting on as Brora has not reached mass market status yet. Dornoch of course is a prize and I will pre book there.

Would be surprised under that scenario if you didn't get on. They are so nice there I'm sure if you called a day or two before even if you didn't reserve a time they'd give you an honest assessment of your chances.
