The Ultimate Titleist 917 Driver Fitting at TPI Oceanside (Launch Monitor Data Added Pg. 4)

Recommended Posts

A few pics of my 917 setup.

Can you comment on your ball speed, AOA, and Launch Angle?

Ball speeds were between 165-167, launch angle between 10-11 degrees (need to work on this), and AOA was -2 degrees or so (also need to work on this).

I need to work on my driver swing where I am hitting up on the ball and creating a positive AOA and higher launch angle.

Do you have any experience with the yellow? My BS is about 162, and trying to decide if 6.0 or 6.5 is good for me in the 75....aoa is +2-3, and launch is about 13 with the D+ 70x ltd....

I don't. Not much experience with the PX driver/fairway shafts.

My 917 from this event came today. Unfortunately I had already gone to the range tonight before I went home. I will play a round with it on Sunday. Some other shafts, including the same as I have in the 917 have arrived for the M2 so I should be able to do more head to head comparisons. I did get some more swings in with the 917 F2 today. I should get it shortened a bit cause as soon as I choked up a bit I was striping it. Such a good fairway wood. I do have the M2 HL as well and I was really impressed with that. It'll be a tough battle for that spot in the bag.

My 917 arrived sometime yesterday. YAY! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to swing by and collect it in time for this morning's M1 driver fitting. This fitting was scheduled a week ago, and like everyone else, I had hoped for the 917 to arrive sooner. Regardless, I had my G30 LS Tec with me to provide a baseline. I've been on the launch monitor three times with the 917 versus my G30 so I think I'm pretty well aware of how they stack up. They are very close with the 917 being slightly longer.

Today's fitting was outdoors on Flightscope. I really appreciate the how hard the fitter worked to find the best set-up for me. After a bunch of shaft and M head combos, the M1 460 w/Black Tie was the winner. This didn't surprise me because I was fit into this combo before. Like the 917, the M1 was just slightly longer than G30. M1 launch conditions were quite consistent but I found it harder to hit as straight.

I've seriously beaten this to death. Ball speeds with the M1, 917, and G30 are very consistent and similar. There isn't one that magically gives me more ball speed and there's not enough between them to say any one is "hotter" than any other. IMO, any differences are in the fitting. Mike at Arroyo did a wonderful job with the M1 and so did Glenn at TPI with the 917. I'll pat myself on the back for the G30.

Super glad I had today's fitting to put any M driver lusting to bed. Will probably put together the M1/Black Tie combo for the heck of it if a good deal comes my way. Until then, the TPI fit 917 is looking pretty darn good.

Got to try the 917 setup out on the course today. Overall it was solid, I hit some good drives with it and I wasn't too punished on mishits like I would have been with my D4 but I think the biggest thing for me was the shaft. The Hzrdus black handcrafted is a VERY stable shaft. I had tried the hzrdus black before in the King Ltd Pro in which it was a no upcharge shaft and this handcrafted version felt completely different and the results were different as well.

I've read here that there are differences in the handcrafted version (which is an upcharge) vs the non handcrafted version which TM and Cobra offer as a no upcharge shaft and it is night an day.

Head felt very solid and overall was consistent with it.

Just got fit today into a combo I would never think about even trying, but the performance was there!

I ended up getting fit for 10.5 D2 with Diamana blue stiff.

My swing speed is right around 105 (why the blue made me nervous, but it launched the ball and didn't feel whippy like the non limited edition model).

My spin was around 1800-2200

Launch was around 13-14*

What do you guys think about this combo? Is this shaft going to be ok if I warm up mid season and get a little more speed out of my swing?

Side note: one of my all time favorite shafts is the Project X LX60, which is same weight as the blueboard, but a little lower torque. I just want to make sure I am not going to grow out of this shaft of I increase my SS a little.

I always thought I would be whiteboard but launch was too low...

Thanks!

Welp. Played 36. This driver is too good for me. Usually when I try to get after one, I'll hit a big draw. Those same swings with my fitted 917 produce baby draws. My misses now seem to be 5-8 yard pushes which I'm completely fine with! I've YET to miss left with it. Granted, my miss the last two rounds off the driver have been slightly heely. The 2-3 heel shots BARELY moved right AND the distance was still there! Carded two rounds, both were +4, which I've never done back-to-back!

And the sound..in an even slightly enclosed tee box, I stand by my statement about the 917 sound. It's like a 910 on steroids. IMO, the sound and feel is better than the 910. The 917 almost feels thicker, but it sounds like the ball just explodes off of it.

Thanks again to the GolfWRX staff for the opportunity. This driver is staying put.

...and not that it matters, but those two 76 rounds made my trending handicap index to a 6.7!

It's been a solid setup. The HZRDUS is a great shaft and I'm getting consistent with it. I really like the head weight of Titleist drivers, you can always feel where it is during your swing.

I'm not exaggerating that I feel like it's hitting a wedge. My left miss is gone and I'm actually swinging a little harder than ever just because I know I can't overcook a draw. Hands down the best driver I've ever owned. How's it for you?

Everyone came to their senses that it's exactly the same as the 915 but sounds better and it's grey.

I think that's an overstatement. I have hit the 917 to spots I never saw with my 915 D2 or D4. My D2 when I missed had some excessive spin, not the 917. The 917D3 is really good, just not revolutionary. I'm going back and forth between the 917 D3 and M2. Both have their plusses an minuses with no clear leader. I do know my miss with the M2 has seemed worse than the D3. I think the D3 has better heel forgiveness, which is where my miss is. I also like the head shape of the 917 D3 more. That's my experience anyway. I haven't posted much because I get in maybe one round a week, and maybe one range session if I'm lucky. I haven't put both drivers through the paces enough to see which one is actually best on the course. I wish I had some of your lives where you are playing multiple times a week.

And thank heavens for both of those things - which add up to make it a far better club than the 915, in my opinion. I just got my 917F2 to complement the driver as of yesterday. I'm still riding the lightning. So much so that I haven't even paid much attention to the hype-train of my namesake in the Epic thread (how's that for being a "fanboy"). If my 917 purchase has taught me anything, it remains all about finding the right head/shaft combo, and when you do, you're in business.

After all this, sadly, the G30LS is still in the bag. I'm simply more comfortable with it and I haven't yet seen enough of a difference on-course to warrant the change. On the launch monitor, yes. On-course, not so much. Also, I feel like my swing changes a bit when I play with the TPI fit driver. Something about the looks of the low-lofted head, I think.

A big voice is telling me I'm being stupid to think I can randomly improve on the TPI fitting. But collectively based on all the 917 fittings, I want to try reducing spin. I was fit into the S+Ltd 60 and I've now picked-up a D+Ltd 70. Heavier, lower, launch, lower spin. We'll see how it goes but I'm not holding my breath. As we all know, there are some new contenders entering the fray shortly that have some serious hype.

Love it. Not gonna rave about it like its the best driver ever made, but for me it is 110% worth the change from the D4. Apart from the look and feel being better, i like the consistency i get from it. I seem to get away with a bad strike better than before, the joys of being properly fitted i guess :)

Not for me. This club is longer and straighter than the 915 and feel and sound is improved. After 3 rounds, my handicap has gone down .7 and I am finding a lot more fairways.

I won't. I just had the latest TM offering and it was one of my least successful drivers ever. I'm sure the Cally will be great, but I'm 100% satisfied with the 917 and doubt I'll even bother to hit the Epic. I'm actually doing my own Epic event over the last 10 days or so - by ordering a bunch of stuff from Titleist and seeing how many Titleist boxes I can get to show up this month to complement the 917D3 I got last month. So far I'm at a 917 3 wood, SM6 sand wedge, and SM6 lob wedge.

Hit the m2 for 30 minutes with 8 shafts and still hated it. I hit a couple that carrried a few yards farther but I hit many more high right pushes . The m line is so fade bias it's insane. Spin was 200 rpm lower. But 2000 to 2200 isn't a big issue. Forgiveness and sound are much better for me on the 917d2. Plus it turns over or fades at will.
